New Castle Oak Knoll Press 2005 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 352 pages
First edition. With Edward L. Rosenberry. This work is a well-illustrated history of the Pennsylvania German printing traditions as represented by over 130 of their broadsides and fraktur specimens. Printing in both German fraktur (black letter) and English, these intrepid early printers produced thousands of flyers, posters, and instructional pieces in varieties so extensive as to defy categorization. Their legal documents, such as marriage, baptism, and birth certificates, with their colorfully primitive motifs and borders, are highly collected today. However, their other works are also explored and explained in this ground-breaking work. More than 130 color and black-and-white works are illustrated in detail with dates, printers and purpose.

Edward Rosenberry said in a review that "The first step in the recovery and understanding of a cultural heritage is to collect surviving evidence and arrange it in a systematic way for interpretation. Flying Leaves and One-Sheets starts that process. Readers of this book will gain insight into the folk-ways of the Pennsylvania German ethnic group and the impact it exercised upon American culture before 1876. This work introduces Pennsylvania German broadsides to the American public. It is a scholar's treat and a pleasure for all who look within."

Marks), by Louis Fagan of the British Museum, first appeared in 1883 and contains 671 "marks" for book owners (individuals or institutions): Signatures, initials, monograms, stamps, stars, crosses, coats of arms, intertwined forms and "other marks and devices," all reproduced in facsimile. The last part ("new contributions") is an addition by the editors of this edition, Milton Einstein and Max Goldstein, and lists 205 additional marks, many of them from America (e.g. M. Cassatt, J.P. Morgan), following the format of part one, although a smaller portion of marks are identified.

See More... Errington, Philip W. JOHN MASEFIELD, THE 'GREAT AUK' OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, A BIBLIOGRAPHY
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2004 8.5"x 11" Hardcover, dust jacket 932 pages
John Masefield (1878-1967) was a prolific and popular writer, whose longevity afforded him a publishing history spanning six decades. Poet Laureate of Great Britain from 1930 until his death, Masefield was only 23 years old when he wrote his best-remembered poem 'Sea-Fever'.
He was admired by the most influential artists of the twentieth century: for his poetry, by W. B. Yeats, Thomas Hardy and Philip Larkin; for his novels by Graham Greene; and for his plays by George Bernard Shaw.
Yet, Masefield was not only significant as a writer. His career and output are significantly linked with twentieth-century publishing concerns. For the first time in a Masefield bibliography, archives of agents and publishers have been included in order to detail the publishing history of his individual works. This added detail offers another dimension to a man who is representative of so many parts of literary life: a best-selling and popular author, a victim of publishing contracts, an early employer of a literary agency, a patron of private presses and a figure particularly active in the literary world. This comprehensive bibliography comes at a time of new interest and re-assessment. Illustrated with 50 black-and-white illustrations. Co-published with The British Library. SALES RIGHTS: North and South America; available elsewhere from The British Library.

Pinner, Middlesex Private Libraries Association 2009 7.25 x 10.75 in. hardcover 328 pages
The book consists of a detailed history of the Press and a full bibliography of its publications and ephemera, tracing the venture from its origins in Sydney, Australia, in the early 1920s, to success in London from 1926, and its final dissolution in 1930. The Press was notable for the literary input of its proprietor Jack Lindsay, working initially with John Kirtley, later with P. R. Stephensen, and finally alone. For the illustrations, it published work by Jack's father, Norman Lindsay, as well as by Edward Bawden, Hal Collins, Lionel Ellis, and others. Jack Lindsay was responsible for the typographical design (initially with Kirtley) that brought a distinctive style to the books of the Press.

This book has been designed by Paul W. Nash, printed by Henry Ling, and bound in blue cloth with a design inspired by a Fanfrolico publication. There are 96 illustrations, including reduced facsimiles of the title pages of the forty-six books published by the Press. Sales Rights: Worldwide except for the UK and Australia. See More... Fichtenberg, M. NEW AND COMPLETE MANUAL ON THE MAKING OF FANCY PAPERS BY M. FICHTENBERG
Edited by Richard J. Wolfe New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2010 5 x 7.25 inches hardcover 242 pages
New and Complete Manual on the Making of Fancy Papers was originally written in French by M. Fichtenberg in 1852. Richard Wolfe has translated the book into English, while including a new preface.

The craft of marbling paper was introduced into Europe and the Middle East from Turkey and Germany during the last two decades of the sixteenth century, and then into France in the first decade of the seventeenth century. England, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and other European countries began marbling as well, but the production outside of England still remained small. It was not until its introduction into the British Isles in 1750 that marbling increased in popularity.

The different countries had different methods and designs to their marbling. In France, marbling was first performed by bookbinders who catered mainly to the needs of the book trade. This often meant marbled papers were used for decorating "extra" bindings, or even sometimes made for people who restricted their output to wallpaper. Fortunately, the nineteenth century saw a change in French marbling, as they were introduced to a Turkish pattern containing an infusion of turpentine in the final color. This created an appearance of a network of fine, lacey holes.

New and Complete Manual on the Making of Fancy Papers documents the changes and innovations in French marbling and presents the marbling and fancy paper trades of the mid nineteenth century. It contains procedures and processes of manufacturing, particularly of non-marbled papers that had declined. Explaining the origins of the new quasi-marble designs, still seen in a large number of French bookbindings, it also details the precipitation of colors through examination of European and American marbling manuals.

This manual describes many steps in the marbling process. It describes the methods of making colors and the preparation of the aluminum serving to give body to the colors including reds and violets, yellows, blues, and greens. It discusses the preparation of hide glue, paste, glue, glazing, polishers, workshops, troughs, papers that are quilted, papers exhibiting the grain of wood, granite papers, printing, varnishing, sealing wax, and a variety of other details. Four pages of color illustrations complete the book.

2 volumes. New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2009 6 x 9 inches 2 volumes, hardcover, dust jacket 1028 pages
First edition. During the years of the Great Depression and the decades that followed, works of American regional writing became increasingly popular. The thirteen series highlighted in this book were published from 1938 to 1980 and contain 163 titles, providing a broad representation of series Americana published during this span. Taken together, the series constitute a unique and compelling self-portrait of America, encompassing the American people, their history and culture, and the nation's natural treasures-its mountains, plains, and lakes-over a broad sweep of time measured in centuries. Other aspects of America-landmarks, seaports, forts, trails, folkways, customs, society in America, and even regional murders-are also subjects of these series. "Series Americana" continued to fill in the national self-portrait that began with the publication of state guide series by
the Federal Writers Project of the WPA (1937--1942), and continued with the Rivers of America series (1937--1974).

Each of the thirteen sections contains an introduction and publishing history, brief biographical sketches of the series editors, authors, and illustrators, a precise bibliographical description of the first edition/first printing of each title in the series, a tabulation of the number of reprints, and a listing of other works by the book's author. There are 242 biographical sketches altogether. With this wealth of relevant information, the books in these series function as guides to the regions or subjects they address. Much of the information presented about these books and their publishers, editors, and authors, has never before been assembled in an organized and usable format. This book will help preserve the memory of the talented American men and women who contributed to these series.

Carol Fitzgerald is the author of The Rivers of America: A Descriptive Bibliography (Oak Knoll Press, 2001). A longtime book collector, she has co-curated several exhibits of books and ephemera from her personal collections of Americana. She is a member of The Grolier Club, the Book Club of California, and the Fontaneda Society and lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her husband, Jean.
