See More... Cooke, Simon ILLUSTRATED PERIODICALS OF THE 1860S: CONTEXTS & COLLABORATIONS.
New Castle, Delaware, Pinner and London, England Oak Knoll Press, The Private Libraries Association, The British Library 2010 7.25 x 10.75 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 224 pages
The 1860s are considered the "Golden Age" of illustrated periodicals, a time when the "knockabout" humor of the 1840s, which was dominated by illustrators such as Cruikshank, Doyle, and Phiz, gave way to a more considered style grounded in serious artistic principles, allowing for deeper expression and emotion in artistic output. The first book of its kind, Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s, focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form.

Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals, revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers, editors, artists, engravers, and authors. The book considers the effects of these relationships on creative output, both artistic and literary, and in so doing provides a detailed, historical reconstruction of the essential character of the periodicals of that era. The book includes over 120 reproductions of engravings and preparatory drawings, almost all of them original size.

Additionally, the text contains two appendices; the first includes a reflection of the work that goes into collecting and researching these periodicals. The second lists the key illustrators, engravers, publishers, editors, as well as magazines mentioned throughout the text, each including a brief description. This work is an informative and colorful choice for those interested in the history of periodicals, the production of magazines, and art.

Simon Cooke has written widely on the subject of Victorian art and literature. He received his doctorate from Exeter and his teaching qualifications from the Open University and the University of Leicester. Cooke is currently a teacher of English language and literature.

Available outside North and South America from The British Library.

Pinner Private Libraries Association 1976 small 4to. cloth, dust jacket. viii, 96 pages.
First edition. Joseph Cundall was notable as a publisher, editor, author, book-designer, and pioneer photographer. Born in 1818, he was trained as a printer but became a publisher in his early twenties and produced many of the most attractive popular illustrated books of the 1850s and 1860s. His career as a photographer was also important, culminating in 1871 when the British Government sent him to Bayeux to organize the first photographic record of the famous tapestry. In 1843, at the age of twenty-five, Cundall became publisher of the Home Treasury series of children's books, conceived and edited by Henry Cole (who a few years later was one of the creators of the 1851 Great Exhibition). In the opinion of Ruari McLean these are still the most beautifully designed children's books ever made. But Cundall became bankrupt around 1849 and thereafter worked for other publishers on a freelance basis, mostly anonymously. For this reason his achievement has never been adequately recognized. In this volume Ruari McLean provides, for the first time, a list of works published, edited, written or designed by Cundall. He also includes an account of Cundall's life, as far as it has been possible to discover it from the very few available documents surviving in various branches of the Cundall family, and from the books themselves. This important volume is illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs taken from unique originals, or from proofs, in Cundall family collections. With the Randeria bookplate.

Pinner, Middlesex Private Libraries Association 2009 7.25 x 10.75 in. hardcover 328 pages
The book consists of a detailed history of the Press and a full bibliography of its publications and ephemera, tracing the venture from its origins in Sydney, Australia, in the early 1920s, to success in London from 1926, and its final dissolution in 1930. The Press was notable for the literary input of its proprietor Jack Lindsay, working initially with John Kirtley, later with P. R. Stephensen, and finally alone. New Castle, Delaware & London, England & Middlesex, England Oak Knoll Press & The British Library & Private Libraries Association 2005 7 x 12 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 337 pages
First edition. John Everett Millais is admired as one of the most celebrated of Pre-Raphaelite painters. Perhaps less known is the major contribution he made both to book and periodical illustration between 1852 and 1883. Many of these book illustrations remain little known today, largely due to the fact that they are scattered in hundreds of 19th century books and periodicals. This important new work brings together over 300 examples of Millais illustrations, enabling this part of his work to be viewed and appreciated by new generations. This work will be an important reference to any scholar interested in Victorian book illustration.
Paul Goldman was a curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. He is the author of Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870 - The Heyday of Wood-Engraving (British Museum Press, 1994) and Victorian Illustration - The Pre-Raphaelites, The Idyllic School and The High Victorians (Scolar Press, 1996). Co-Published with the Private Libraries Association and The British Library. Sales rights North and South America.

Pinner Private Libraries Association 1971 8vo. cloth. xli, 88, xliii-xlviii pages.
This edition reprints the first English manual intended for the private press printer. Fascinating reading, much of this information is good practical advice for those interested in letterpress printing, even today. With fifteen pages of type specimens, ornaments, and a priced catalogue devoted to all the other apparatus, this book describes the Parlour Press, a hinged bellows-type press operated by a beaked lever on top of the platen in much the same way as the flatbed Adana of today. Photographs and plans of this press are included in this edition. With an introduction by James Mosley, librarian of St Bride's Printing Library with notes on the original text. Bookplate.

See More... (Jewitt, Orlando) Broomhead, Frank THE BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS OF ORLANDO JEWITT.
Pinner, Middlesex Private Libraries Association 1995 tall 8vo. cloth. xvi, 256 pages.
According to Broomhead, during the 19th century, a growing demand for books, resulting from wider general education and an increasing interest in antiquarian pursuits by the leisured classes, was met by the inventive genius of the period, which was able to develop new processes and machines for speedier and cheaper book production. Book illustration was an area where new techniques were widely employed, giving the books of the period an added interest for many collectors. Wood engraving was used extensively for illustrating books in the 19th century, losing its eminence only when photographic and photo-mechanical processes were developed in the latter decades of the century. One prolific wood engraver, whose early work showed some similarities to the work of Thomas Bewick, was Orlando Jewitt (1799-1869.) His illustrations appeared widely over the half-century from approximately 1820 to 1870. Many of the books containing his engravings continued to be reprinted, and Jewitt's work was used after his death in newly published works. Jewitt's illustrations are included in many standard works in the fields of topography, architecture (Gothic Revival), archaeology and natural history. He also illustrated books for young people, as well as working as an engraver of seals and bookplates. This book contains approximately 100 illustrations, an introduction and multi-chapter history of Jewitt's background, two appendixes listing Jewitt's work as an author and his bookplates, a checklist of books and periodicals illustrated by him, references cited and an index of titles.

Pinner, Middlesex Private Libraries Association 2007 6.25 x 9.75 inches hardcover 378 pages
First edition. Here, in the guise of a history of the Private Libraries Association, is an account of the friendships of its members over the past fifty years. They have all been collectors, with widely differing interests, from countries across the world, united by a love of books and the need to be surrounded by them at the end of a day's work and in all the years of retirement. The aim of the society is to bring together such enthusiasts and to offer them books and essays in the association's journal that would lead them further into the bibliophilic web. The enormous range of their interests adds vitality to the group's publications and creates a dynamic tension between the need to deal in sufficient depth with each subject and yet to interest other members whose collections have moved in quite different directions.
The book contains the story of the Association and a bibliography of its publications, but perhaps the most interesting portions are the brief essays by over eighty members about their collections, with photographs of many of these individuals and illustrations taken from the collections. Their specialties range from illustrated books and early private presses to Australiana, golf, the history of the automobile and surgery. There is a retail price index at the end of the book, which will prove very useful when recounting book prices over the last 50 years. This book is an enjoyable and valuable resource for book collectors everywhere. Distributed by Oak Knoll for the Private Libraries Association.
