See More... Hardison, Brian Davon BURRIANA: A CATALOGUE OF RARE BOOKS, PAMPHLETS, LETTERS, MANUSCRIPTS, DOCUMENTS, & OBJECTS BY, ABOUT, OR RELATING TO AARON BURR AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES.
New York The Grolier Club 2012 6 x 9.25 inches hardcover 306 pages
This book was produced to accompany the exhibition "Aaron Burr Returns to New York," on show at the Grolier Club May 15-July 28, 2012; but it is also a detailed record of all the most important items from Brian Hardisons superb and comprehensive collection of Aaron Burr, Jr., (1756-1836).

Soldier, lawyer, statesman, and the third Vice President of the United States under Jefferson, Burr was also one of the most maligned figures of the founding era, accused of attempting to steal the Presidential election of 1800 from Thomas Jefferson, of murdering Alexander Hamilton in 1804, and of treason in 1807. Yet a careful examination of contemporary documents, including the five hundred plus items described in this catalogue, reveals a far more complex persona, one whose support for womens rights, the arts and the nascent anti-slavery movement were among the most progressive of his time. The documents show a military hero, a highly skilled lawyer, a caring family man, and a great philanthropist, not to mention a very able politician. Hero or villain, Burr was an enormously influential (if controversial) public figure whose impact continues to be felt today.

The catalogue is organized chronologically and focuses on major events in Burrs life, including his role in the first murder trial in United States history, the presidential elections of 1796 and 1800, and his trial for treason. Illustrated in color throughout, the book contains a thirteen-page introduction, useful appendices, and an index.

New York The Grolier Club 2002 8.25 x 10.25 inches hardcover 256 pages
This catalog accompanies an exhibition on medical quackery, tracing its prevalence from the itinerant seller of nostrums four centuries ago to unsolicited spam on the Internet today. Prints by William Hogarth, Honoré Daumier and others highlight the theatrics of the quack at work; posters by Jules Chéret, Maxfield Parrish and their contemporaries illustrate the remarkable artistry with which proprietary medicines once advertised; and works by H.G. Wells, Weir Mitchell and other writers offer a delightful look at the elaborate language once used to promote the quack's wares.

William H. Helfand is the author of five books including Pharmacy: An Illustrated History (co-author David Cowen, Harry N. Abrams, 1990), and The Picture of Health, (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1991) as well as a number of articles on the history of pharmacy, and on prints, caricatures, posters and ephemera relating to pharmacy and medicine. In recent years, he has curated several exhibitions on prints, drawings and photographs relating to pharmacy, dentistry and nursing in the Ars Medica Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

On May 30, 2001, thirty-seven members of the Grolier Club visited many of the greatest private and institutional collections of Scotland and England, viewing fine bindings, Gutenberg Bibles, rare atlases and herbals, unusual political tracts, and more. This book is an itinerary of the trip, consisting of pieces written by the participants on each day's bookish activities, lessons, and entertainment. Outside of libraries, the members also visited the village of Auchinleck, enjoyed dinner on the Britannia yacht, toured the gardens of Wardington Manor, and dined at the Guild Hall of the Worshipful Order of Ironmongers.
