See More... (British Library) REPORT FROM THE COMMITTEE TO WHOM THE PETITION OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM, RELATIVE TO THE LANSDOWN MANUSCRIPTS, WAS REFERRED.
(London) British Museum 1807 folio disbound signatures 8 pages
Committee report advising the British Museum Trustees to purchase the Lansdown Manuscripts, one of the foundation acquisitions of the Museum's library, forerunner of today's British Library. Compiled by Lord Shelburne, Willliam Petty, Marquis of Lansdown (1737-1805), the collection touched on all areas of knowledge. It included, among other things: manuscripts of Elizabethan dramas; a treatise on astronomy in Persian; legal documents transcribed from the Domesday Book; a collection of Chinese books with a partial dictionary. In their study the Committee dealt with the executors of Lansdown's estate, attorney John Eardley-Wilmot and Sir Francis Baring, founder of the merchant bank Baring Brothers. In the negotiations Wilmot, also a book-collector and antiquarian, encouraged and furthered the cause of the Museum's purchase of the Manuscripts. Pages of report originally sewn together, now loose. Leaves numbered 19 - 25 in ink in upper right hand corner.

(British Museum) LIST OF THE BOOKS OF REFERENCE IN THE READING ROOM OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM.
London Trustees of the British Museum 1859 8vo. original cloth. xxxi, 413 pages and tipped-in foldout.
First edition. The 1857 opening of the British Museum's new building, with the domed reading room first sketched by A. Panizzi in 1852, was followed by the first edition of this work in 1859. The preface by John Winter Jones (1805-1881), then Panizzi's assistant and later Librarian after his retirement, discussed the history of public access to the British Museum and earlier reading rooms, concluding with a discussion of the new Reading Room. This preface is followed by a list of titles, arranged alphabetically in brief entries. This is followed by a subject index of the catalogues which were kept on the circular tables around the librarian's and clerks' desks in the middle of the Reading Room, and a subject index of the reference books. A square multi-colored foldout shows the plan of the Reading Room with subject locations; the facsimile reproduces Panizzi's initial sketch and notes for the Reading Room. Ex library copy with markings. Front cover, free endpaper, and directions for using the reading room loose.
