Auction catalogue, Bangs and Company, New York, May 23-25, 1887, 2,050 lots (McKay 3475). Richard March Hoe (1812-1886), was the uncle of the great bibliophile Richard Hoe, III, and inherited R. Hoe & Company, a manufacuturer of printing presses, when he was eighteen. He patented the first flat bed and cylinder press in the United States, as well as type-revolving machines and the first true rotary press for printing newspapers. The catalogue introduction notes that no comparable library of typographical works and printing history has ever been offered for sale to American buyers. Many lots have prices realized in the margin. Removed from binder and binding partially broken.
