Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2009 9.5 x 12.5 inches hardcover, dust jacket 600 pages, plus 100 pages on CD-ROM
During almost two centuries from 1685 to 1866 the well-known Dutch map publishing house of Covens & Mortier supplied the then-modern world with maps and atlases. From the late seventeenth century, this company developed rapidly into one of the leading wholesalers in cartographic products. As a result, almost every present-day map lover is familiar with the name Covens & Mortier. Moreover, Covens & Mortier maps can be found in map collections all over the world. There is hardly a cartographic exhibition catalogue to be found in which the name of this Amsterdam firm is not mentioned.

Despite this great reputation, until recently, map historians groped in the dark about the exact development, size, and meaning of this publishing house. To what internal and external circumstances did Covens & Mortier owe its great expansion? How did they sell their maps and atlases? In which cartographic areas did innovation take place? What was the firm's position from an international point of view? Thanks to the results of ten years of intensive research into the publishing activities of Covens & Mortier, these questions can finally be answered. In this richly illustrated book, the definitive research results are presented. Furthermore, an extensive carto-bibliography with original and derivative maps, published by Covens & Mortier, has been added.

Volume 8 in the series Utrecht Studies on the History of Cartography, this work comes with a bibliography, indices, and several appendices on CD-ROM, including a genealogy of the families Covens & Mortier, estate inventories, catalogues of maps and copperplates, and references to Covens & Mortier in contemporary periodicals and booksellers' books. Illustrated with nearly 500 full-color images.

on the Evil and Impolicy of the Church Engaging in Merchandise; and Setting Forth the Wrong Done to Booksellers, and the Extravagance, Inutulity, and Evil-Working, of Charity Publication Societies. Philadelphia King & Baird, Printers 1849 8vo. self paper wrappers 24 pages
Listed in Sabin no. 32818 with twenty entries on OCLC. A pamphlet protesting charity publication societies, such as the American Tract Society, which published religious works at or below cost. Hooker was a retired Episcopalian minister and bookseller who thought that the church "engaging in merchandise" would taint its divinity and have a secularizing influence, while at the same time, producing books at or below cost and running off charity took those charitable contributions away from other "needful objects". Hooker encouraged people to withhold their contributions to the societies to "force them to live by the economical management of their business" through cost-saving measures, such as removing illustrations and only producing expository texts for the betterment of the Christian readers. Despite these protests, The American Tract Society, which was established in 1825, is still active today. Signed by previous owner with his address on front wrapper, wrappers uniformly darkened except on front where another text used to sit, stitching on spine gone so leaves loose, some staining and wear on wrappers.

This superbly comprehensive and detailed bibliography of the British book trade, the product of research in over three hundred libraries in the UK and USA, supersedes all bibliographies on British authors and authorship, bibliography itself, book collecting, bookbinding, book illustration, bookselling, censorship, copyright, libraries, literacy, papermaking, printing, publishing, textual criticism, and typography until 1890. More than 24,000 items (notably articles in trade journals) are lightly annotated and arranged in classified chronological order to illustrate the social and technological development of British book crafts and industries. British Book Trade, 1475-1890 belongs in every research library: no-one who works in the fields of British literature, bibliography, or book trade history should neglect this work.

2 volumes. Berlin Triton 2000 4to. linen-covered boards, both volumes enclosed in a linen slipcase. 391,(3) pages; 20 inserts in portfolio.
Printed in an edition of 2000 copies. Volume I of a series of three installments, not yet completed. Praised as "a masterpiece of book production" and "a product of enthusiasts" by critic Wilfried F. Schoeller, the book traces the early 20th-century history of the Insel publishing house. Insel earned its renown by turning book production into an art form as it printed the works of classic authors and gave a new generation of writers, such as Rainer Maria Rilke, their start. The editor, Brinks, reveals Insel's high aesthetic standards through sumptuous illustrations of its work. In all, there are 240 illustrations, seven of which are foldouts, many polychrome with three and four colors, and many with stunning gold print. One splendid example of the high-quality illustrations is the foldout of a series of classics, The Thousand and One Nights and the Decameron, the bindings designed by Marcus Behmer. The colors are so rich and the detail so striking that the reader almost feels he can touch and leaf through the deckled pages of the books shown. Another example depicted is that of Henry van de Velde's designs for the covers of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra, as well as sample pages from the edition, both finely detailed with gold print. Text edited by Brinks with seventeen essays contributed by him and twelve other specialists such as Juergen Suess, Marcus Haucke, and Suzanne Buchinger. Essays beautifully printed with wide margins and double-spaced on Gardapat paper in cursive Borgis White Antiqua. Outstanding documentation for the essays at the back of the book, as well as detailed indices for artwork and literary sources. Accompanying the book is a slim briefcase volume containing twelve facsimile resolution papers and eight folder reproductions in their original format. Distributed for Triton in North America by Oak Knoll Press. In German.
