A Marbling Rarity - the first illustrated edition

(Marbling) Halfer, Josef DIE FORTSCHRITTE DER MARMORIERKUNST.
Ein Praktisches Handbuch für Buchbinder und Buntpapierfabrikanten. Nach technisch-wissenschaftlichen grundlagen bearbeitet von Josef Halfer, Buchbinder in Budapest. II. Verbesserte und vermehrte auflage. Mit anhang verzierung der buchsnitte. Stuttgart Wilhelm Leo 1891 8vo. later half red calf with marbled paper covered boards, five raised bands, top edge gilt (a signed binding by Zaehnsdorf). 224 pages with 5 leaves of single mounted marbled paper specimens + 5 leaves each with 6 mounted marbled paper specimens
Text in German. Second edition--the first to be illustrated--of this seminal work on marbling by the Budapest based bookbinder and marbler, Josef Halfer. It was first published, without specimen papers in 1885. "The Halfer system is so important that marbling history is broken at this point, and referred to as pre-Halferian and post-Halferian marbling. The advantages of the Halfer system were two-fold: freed of the laborious preparation of colors, and with standardized colors, marblers could produce more work; and secondly, the use of carragheen size allowed finer detail in marbling" (Easton, Marbling, a History, pp. 78-9). See also R. Wolfe, Marbled Paper, 1990, pp. 124-30. From the reference library of the Zaehnsdorf Company with a commemorative booklabel loosely inserted. With the bookplate of the Zaehnsdorf Company. Tipped-in is a two page A.L.S. written by Richard Leo (see publisher), dated January 26, 1891. Addressed to a Mr. Zaehnsdorf, the A.L.S. expresses Leo's desire to leave Stuttgart and visit Zaehnsdorf. Rubbed along hinges and soiling along edges.

Stuttgart Wilhelm Leo 1891 8vo. contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards, all edges stained red, red leather spine label. 224 pages.
Second edition, improved and enhanced from the first edition published in 1885. This second edition of Halfer's famous marbling guide was the first to contain original samples and ten plates containing 35 marbled specimens. The traditional techniques of paper marbling were given new life in the late nineteenth century by this book and its extremely important author. In the handbook, Halfer introduces new methods, material and patterns of marbling that sparked a revival of the art amongst bookbinders and craftsmen. Halfer's innovations are based in scientific research, and his guidebook reflects his interest in the chemistry of colors and the physical nature of marbling sizes. As Richard Wolfe states in Marbled Paper: Its History, Technique and Patterns, "Halfer's influence in the art of marbling can not be overestimated." (See Wolfe, pp. 124-130). Rubbed along hinges and edges.

Ein wirkliches Hilfsbuch für den Farbendruck und die Farbenmischung im Buchdruck nach jahrelangen praktischen Erfahrungen und Versuchen bearbeitet und herausgegeben von J... [Practical Guide for Color Book Printing...] Berlin Verlag von J. Müller 1900 4to. original cloth, boards with rounded edges, decorated endpapers. x, 48, (38), with 3 additional leaves.
A book meant to give "those printers and pressmen who have little opportunity for on-the-job training in this branch [i.e. color printing] a way of doing all color printing, of whatever sort, effectively and with full assurance of a good result, and of mixing colors for the work at hand correctly and efficiently" (pp.vii-viii). A brief chapter on the theory of color is followed by chapters on color jobbing printing, printing of multicolored illustrations, and halftone three- and four-color printing. Following this is an explanation of the color tables and then the tables: thirty-three tables of color samples composed and arranged by various methods, four plates of the same picture in different color combinations, and several examples of monochromatic halftone illustration. Tables 1-3 display seventy-two standard colors. Tables 4-33 form a coherent set of colors and color combinations using inks supplied by Berger & Wirth. There are about 600 colors presented in related groups in finely nuanced sequences, including various degrees of gloss. Inks or mixtures used are identified for each color. Each color sample also appears in three degrees of brightness: the solid color, the color in thick parallel lines alternating with thin white lines (imitating dark halftone), and the color in thin lines alternating with white (light halftone), making 1,800 color possibilities in all! A bright copy. An eight page brochure which is supposed to be in a pocket in the back is not present. Remnant of paper label at bottom of spine. Preliminary pages foxed.

Facsimiles of several lines to several pages of autograph letters and other examples of writing by sixty-one historical figures, mostly copied from documents in the British Museum. `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2004 11.25 x 15.25 inches hardcover 360 pages
The Catalogue of Books Printed in the XVth Century Now in the British Museum (British Library), generally referred to as BMC, is a monument in the history of the book. BMC followed on from the rearrangement of the Museum's incunabula begun by Robert Proctor on the basis of the comprehensive survey of printing types and presses of the fifteenth century that he had published in 1898 as an "Index" of the incunabula in the Museum and the Bodleian Library.
The Index represented a working-out of the system he had developed for the identification of printers of the incunabula period on the basis of typographical material. The volumes of BMC extend Proctor's principles by providing full descriptions of the incunabula in the collections of the British Museum and making revisions where necessary. The first part appeared in 1908, prepared by A.W. Pollard after Proctor's death in 1903. The most recent part was published in 1985. 50 leaves with facsimiles and other illustrations.
