First edition. (See William Fredeman's article on this press in the Library, June 1974, pp.139-164). Printed, published and illuminated by Emily Faithfull, the proprietor of the Victoria Press. Fredeman calls this one of the "most splendid works published by Emily Faithfull". "As physical objects (this book and one other produced by Faithfull), they are superior to any book issued with the imprint of the press, and they compare favourably with similar books by Owen Jones and Noel Humphreys..." Emily Faithfull established this press in 1860 as an outlet for her theories on the employment of women and the press employed mostly women in most facets of the business. The press was transferred to the Queen Printing and Publishing Company in 1881.
Presentation on verso of free endpaper "R. Townsend Mayer, With Emily Faithful's best regards, Feb. 24, 1869." With the bookplate of Samuel Ralph Townsend and Gertrude Mary Mayer on front pastedown. Wear at bottom of spine and one corner. Inside hinges craced with pages loose as often happened with this book as the pages were not sewn in by the original binder.

First of three editions. (Bigmore & Wyman I, p.211). A history of the art of printing which Bigmore and Wyman write "is the most important of the works published in Germany, on the occasion of the 4th centenary of the invention of printing." Divided into several sections, this volume contains a chronological history of early printing from the 1450's, a history of famous printers and printing houses, a history of printing by continent with a state by state survey of the United States, and a catalogue of printing techniques. The first part is well-illustrated with reproductions of woodblock illustrations printed in early books. Many of these plates fold-out and are printed in color. The last section on printing techniques describes printing in gold and silver, xylographie, stereotypie, typographie and many other processes. Included are specimens of some of these processes printed by B.G. Teubner, many of these are printed in color, embossed, and some represent ornaments suitable for banknotes or are specimens of maps. Many other internal illustrations. Text is followed by ten pages of type specimens including specimens of Hebrew, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Chinese, Greek, and others. Includes a list of subscribers. Printed in an edition limited to 600 copies. Reproduced from the copy in the Printing Library of the St. Bride Institute. Thirty-three plates depict samples of the types cut by Fournier c. 1742 and which then appeared in his Manuel Typographique. A consummate artist and craftsman, Fournier (1712 - 1768) was one of the 18th century's finest engravers and typefounders, and his type, with its light, clean look on the printed page and great economy in text, greatly influenced Giambattista Bodoni ( 1740 - 1813), who later in the century popularized the more severe "modern" look. Introduction by Mosley, renowned typography professor and then librarian at the St. Bride Printing Library. Printed in collotype by Louis van Leer & Co. of Amsterdam on rag cream paper. Loosely inserted in this copy is the 12 page publisher's catalogue describing this book and others they published.

Gent had written the manuscript in 1746, 32 years before his death at the age of 85. See Lowndes p.875 for further comment on this work. Cracked along back hinge. With an ink inscription on the front free endpaper "E.T. Mason, Feb. 1877" and a note by him stating that he had purchased this copy at the Hastie-Tracy sale 30c." Well preserved copy.

Facsimile edition. Printed in an edition limited to 1000 numbered copies of which 996 were for sale. This edition is the first ever printed in the United States. It reproduces a copy considered by authorities to be one of the most beautifully illuminated of the forty-seven copies known to exist. It derives from the Insel Verlag edition which was based on the copy in the Koniglichen Bibliothek in Berlin, and the copy in the Standischen Landesbibliothek in Fulda. The text pages have been printed by lithography in red, blue and black. There are also about 100 illuminated pages finely printed by sheet-fed gravure. The paper used is 100 percent rag content made especially for this edition.
