"Reprint from the Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, vol. XIV." One of several books by Moore documenting his archaeological findings in the American South. Report on an additional collection of skeletal remains, from Arkansas and Louisiana (made and presented to the National Museum, in 1909, by Mr. Clarence B. Moore) by Dr. Ales Hrdlicka. Accompanied by eight color plates depicting Native American pottery. Includes countless other black-and-white illustrations of earthenware as well as a map of the Ouachita River, which runs from central western Arkansas into Louisiana. Loosely inserted is a commemorative booklabel which indicates that this came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale. Originally published in 1929, these color maps have had several revisions. They consist of linen-backed paper with the corrections pasted directly onto the map. Wear and rubbing at extremities, especially near corners, spine only connected at spine ends. Stains and soiling on covers, paper cover label with some paper loss on right side as well as extremities. Attached by paperclip to the first map is an order form from the Sanborn Map Company. Laid-in at the end are some torn pages of additional notes. Maps heavily wrinkled due to the pasting of the corrections.

Includes one volume of essays in Japanese, a large folio book of 159 pages containing the text in English with numerous authors describing handmade paper for specific countries, a folding case of samples of "forefathers of paper," two sample cases containing specimens of handmade paper from throughout the world and a small price book showing prices for some of the handmade papers shown in the sample cases. The five samples of paper forefathers include papyrus, parchment, Bai-Lan, Amatl Paper and Tapa. The two other specimen cases contain 171 samples of paper from 23 countries. Henry Morris of the Bird & Bull Press wrote the section describing hand papermaking in the United States. Missing four sheets which are replaced with photocopies.

One of 115 copies, of which only 99 were for sale, printed on Hunter's handmade paper and signed by the author. Hunter was the first Occidental traveler to visit the Niltongkum family, who had been "making paper by hand along the small canals of Southern Siam for more than 200 years [in] ... the most interesting primitive paper manufactory in Asia ... This book not only describes in detail the making of the various kinds of Siamese paper from the bark of the khoi tree ... but also the journey from Singapore to Bangkok through the rubber plantations and jungles of the Malay peninsula." Contains a specimen of khoi bark and Siamese mould cloth, three additional full-page specimens of Siamese paper, as well as photogravures. Bound in quarter-black morocco with vellum tips and paper boards with a continuous design of Buddhas in black, red, and gold. Light wear to extremities, else a fine copy of this lavishly produced and beautiful book. The scarcest of all of Hunter's papermaking books. Small scratch to leather on upper board, with some foxing to frontispiece and some off-setting to page with mounted specimens. From the library of Babette and Herberrt Clayburgh with their bookplate on front pastedown (which has foxed the facing free endpaper). Prospectus loosely inserted. Overall a beautiful copy.

First edition, limited to 370 numbered copies and signed by Dard Hunter and the designer, Elmer Adler. This landmark book on hand papermaking in these countries was printed on Japanese mulberry-bark handmade paper and contains 68 photogravure illustrations taken by Hunter on his trip. (See Hunter's My Life with Paper, pp.127-129 for further details of the trip). The book describes the trip and the processes of hand papermaking that Hunter discovered during his journey. The specimens show a wide variety of paper from these three countries and tie in nicely with the descriptions of hundreds of different kinds of paper that he had found, as well as the locations where they were produced. Slight wear to leather spine. Slipcase rubbed. Light foxing to some of the specimen pages.

First edition. Dedication to Hermann Gmeiner-Benndorf "president of the German Paper Association." Late 19th-century German papermaking. A book on the composition, manufacturing, processing, classification and testing of paper, the paper trade, and the machinery used in the paper industry. Well-organized in nine main sections with 145 short, numbered chapters, followed by an index and 36 paper samples (lacking in this copy). Each chapter has subject headings in the margins. The book is meant to be a guide to the intelligent selection of papers for various uses, and as an overview of paper-testing (which also assists paper-users in understanding the resulting paper specifications). There are 127 illustrations, mostly of machinery, but also of processes and materials (drawings of the microscopic components of paper). The section on the paper market includes many statistics. Otto Winckler directed a "facility for paper-testing" (preface), which may have been the facility established by the German government for that purpose near Berlin in 1886; however, he signs the preface "Leipzig." Minor rubbing of covers.

Volume I is divided in three parts and is a detailed examination of Ptolemy as man, geographer, mapmaker, written in German by Josephi Fischer, with various indices, including names, geographers, subjects and a general index. Volume II has 57 photo reproductions of maps from Greek, Latin and Arabian makers depicting various early views of Europe, Asia and Africa. Volume III is an annotated list of the original texts with more than 150 photographic reproductions. Volume IV is the atlas in elephant folio with 27 map plates. All three volumes have bumping and wear to the corners and are heavily worn at bottom edges. The leather spines are rubbed and scratched. Folio has rubbing and soiling to the covers. Bottom cord tie is broken.
