(Art) Pollen, John Hungerford. UNIVERSAL CATALOGUE OF BOOKS ON ART, VOL.I A-K / VOL.2 L-Z / VOL.III SUPPLEMENTARY VOLUME.
3 volumes. New York Burt Franklin n.d. large 8vo. cloth. (ii),ix,(iii),1030; (iv),1061-2188; (iv),655+(1) pages.
Burt Franklin reprint (their Bibliography and Reference series, no.47) of the original 1870 and 1877 works published by the South Kensington Museum in London. See Besterman 523 for the original. In the 1860's, the Kensington Museum decided to publish a kind of union catalogue of "books on art," based on library holdings in England and elsewhere. To be included were books on "Painting, Sculpture, Architecture; on Mosaics, Enamels; hand-wrought utensils in all materials which show a decorative intention; on tombs, monuments bearing sculpture, and on decoration..." (preface by the editor, John Hungerford Pollen), along with other items of potential interest to art students, including illustrated editions of literary works. Music was excluded. In 1870, the Museum issued a kind of cumulated preliminary version, with about 60,000 entries, arranged simply by author/title in brief, unnumbered entries, with no systematic subject access or indexing. A supplementary volume in the same format, with about 18,000 entries, followed in 1877.

See More... Bertrand, Jean. JEAN BERTRAND. BIBLIOTHÈQUE. AUTEURS PAR ORDER ALPHABETIQUE.[From spine labels:]
N.P. n.p. n.d. Book box, labeled as noted above (3320 x 255 mm), hinged on front joint, clasps, full calf over oak boards, two leather spine labels
Book box that, when opened, reveals four green paper-lined sections for catalogue cards (each 42 x 75mm), each section held in place by solid barriers with moveable lettered divisions. A charming and unusual private library catalogue containing a few hundred records in two alphabetically listed columns, with the two further columns filled with blank cards. Many of the card entries are pasted clippings from booksellers' catalogues, some as late as the 1920s. In some cases the clippings are pasted onto the verso of what appear to be earlier ink entries, giving the impression that the catalogue was used over many years. The books described make for a pretty miscellaneous lot of information that do not indicate any particular proclivity of the owner. There are, however, two card entries under Bertrand (Jean) for the Compte-rendu de la Session de Congrès central d'Agriculture for the years 1846 and 1847 respectively. Covers quite bashed with some loss of leather, with some worm drill holes, but all perfectly sound and the wear (arguably) enhances the distressed antique look.

See More... (British Library) INDEX TO THE ADDITIONAL MANUSCRIPTS, WITH THOSE OF THE EGERTON COLLECTION, PRESERVED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM AND ACQUIRED IN THE YEARS 1783-1836.
London Printed by Order of the Trustees [of the Museum] 1849 large 4to. all but disbound. (iv), 514 pages.
Between the publication of the 1782 Ayscough catalogue and the inception of the Index to the Additions in 1836, the British Museum acquired about 5,000 manuscripts or manuscript sets. The Index to the Additions was not retroactive, and manuscript acquisitions from 1783 through 1835 had, therefore, no coverage in any printed catalogue until this gap was closed in 1849 by this "Index." The first 2,000 or so of the approximately 5,000 entries (numbered 5018 to 10,018) were taken from manuscript catalogues at the Museum, and most of the remaining 3,000 (post-1828) were extracted from the annual printed lists of donations and bequests, or from those of additions, with a few additional items. This resulted in a certain lack of uniformity in description, but the Museum felt that the problem was not serious enough to justify postponement (for editing) of this much-needed publication. Nineteenth century library markings. Pages 509-514 provided in photocopy facsimile. Front and rear boards detached, spine lacking. Boards heavily worn at edges and corners. First several pages detached. Some chipping to edges of title page. Soiled.
