With free CD-rom `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2004 10 x 12.5 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 584 pages
Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, including maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic colored maps are included in Petermann's Maps. These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book. An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length. The author, Jan Smits, has been in charge of the map collection of the Royal Library at The Hague since 1979. The series The Utrecht Studies on the History of Cartography in which Petermann's Maps appears as volume III, has been prepared under the direction of the Research Program Explokart of the University of Utrecht and is aimed at both researchers and laymen with an interest in these matters.

Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2012 8.25 x 11.5 inches hardcover 672 pages
This book surveys the history of the techniques of engraving, etching, and plate printing, i.e. that of manual intaglio printmaking processes from their beginnings in the 1430s until today. These developments are observed in the light of the coherence between the technique of the intaglio print (such as its materials and methods of production); the style or outward appearance of the print; the creator of the print; and the fashion typical of a particular social group, place and time. Economic, educational and social aspects are discussed, as well as the worldwide dissemination of the trade of intaglio printmaking.

The author shows how intaglio printmaking developed steadily from the mid-fifteenth century, with the invention of the roller press and the etching of printing plates. By 1525 intaglio printmaking techniques could be said to have reached maturity and spread east and west following the European trade routes and colonization. Further developments in plate-making resulted from a series of inventions and reinventions. After the abolition of the guilds on the European continent around 1800, and the introduction of photography and the expansion of the graphic industry, the engraving of images became a mere mechanical procedure. The handcrafted print made way for the large-scale mechanized graphic industry which emerged in the middle of the nineteenth century. Consequently artist-etchers withdrew to an elite position to concentrate on the manual aspects of printmaking, which is the situation today.

This comprehensively illustrated study is the first of its kind to cover all elements of the trade of engraving and etching throughout six centuries. Based on an exhaustive number of primary sources, it will be an essential resource for collectors, curators, conservators, printmakers, and students of technical art history.

`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2008 22.5 x 30.5 cm cloth. 284 pages.
In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, three following generations of the Adan geometrician family were active in the western part of the province of Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands. The cartographic production of these three generations of geometricians gives a good impression of the development of Dutch cartography in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This work is a scientific accountable reference book and a standard work about the cartographic heritance of the Adan family. It contains contributions about the local landscape, the history of the region, geometricians, the family history and the Adans in historic cartographic perspective. It also includes an annotated bibliography with descriptions and illustrations of nearly 1100 maps which the Adan geometricians have manufactured. The book contains many full-page maps in color. 115 color illustrations and over 1000 black and white illustrations.

Nieuwkoop HES & DE GRAAF 1999 6.5 x 9.5 inches cloth 696 pages
Incunabula of the Low Countries (ILC) is a census of fifteenth-century books printed in the area of the present-day Netherlands and Belgium. It lists 2,229 editions in more than 14,300 copies preserved in hundreds of libraries, museums, and archives all over the world, but mainly in Europe and the USA. The entries for this census have been derived from the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC), the database of incunabula compiled at the British Library. They combine research on Low Countries incunabula carried out by Gerard van Thienen, curator at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, with data assembled by ISTC form other sources. ISTC entries were further edited, indexed and prepared for publication by John Goldfinch at the British Library. Campbell's Annales of 1874, the first bibliography of incunabula printed in the Low Countries with 1794 entries, was followed by a number of supplements of increasing complexity, the most extensive being published by M.E. Kronenberg in 1956. All the former additions and emendations, together with additions not otherwise listed before are now brought together and included in one sequence in ILC.

Twomey, Ryan "THE CHILD IS FATHER OF THE MAN": THE IMPORTANCE OF JUVENILIA IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AUTHOR.
Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2012 6 x 9.5 inches paperback 164 pages
This new book discusses nineteenth-century juvenilia from the development of the child writer into the adult author. Reviewing a juvenile's role in the writing progression to famous authors, the book discusses current academic scholarship for juveniles and focuses on the individual literary progressions of nineteenth-century British writers William Harrison Ainsworth, Emily Brontë, and George Eliot, and the Anglo-Irish writer, Maria Edgeworth.

The analysis of these authors provides historical, regional, gothic, and lyric context and includes an interdisciplinary study into the fields of history, biography, and languages and linguistics. Each chapter is written as an individual case study espousing the importance of the juvenilia on the development of the later, more publicised, authorship. Referencing the perceived neglect the juvenilia has received from the academic community, this book will also discuss the future of the genre.

See More... van den Broecke, Marcel ORTELIUS ATLAS MAPS: AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE.
`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2011 5.5 x 9.5 inches hardcover 708 pages
Ortelius Atlas Maps (1996) by Marcel P. R. van de Broecke was the first book to describe the various editions of the famous atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570). After the publication of Ortelius Atlas Maps, the numbering of the maps given by van den Broecke became the international standard numbering system for cartography books, articles, and auction and dealer catalogues. Each is identified by its "van den Broecke" or "vdB" number. This revised edition contains corrections, extra information to date the charts more correctly, descriptions of title pages, and a portrait of Ortelius. The book is a practical and informative manual that gives an extensive overview of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and includes descriptions of all the maps that appeared in this famous first atlas by Abraham Ortelius. It provides illustrations and information on the various editions of every map that has appeared in the Ortelius Atlas and includes valuable information on the dating and origins of the maps. Examples of changes to the new edition in-clude: of the 234 atlas maps listed, six (viz. Ort27, Portugal; Ort64, Liége; Ort174, Artois; Ort188, Roman Empire; Ort195, Gallia Vetus; and Ort225, Erythraei) turned out to be later states of existing plates. One plate, Ort178, Geographia Sacra, turned out to be a later copy by Janssonius of Ort179, Geographia Sacra. Details about these corrections are given under the specific maps. Another addition is a new plate that has surfaced since the first edition in 1996: Ort11(1), a very close copy of the early state of Ort11, the third plate of the Americas. In 1996, 372 different states were reported for 234 plates. Now, 524 states are reported for 229 plates. This new edition also includes a description of the fourth plate of the Americas, additional title pages, the last lines of text printed on verso of each map in every edition in which that occurs, translated text blocks, and acknowledgements and references. Contains 240 illustrations.
