Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2012 6.5 x 9.5 inches paperback 208 pages
In the later eighteenth and earlier nineteenth centuries, novels were believed to have the power to shape and/or change behaviour, and, by implication, affect the political landscape of society on a large scale. The English response to the French Revolution can be traced through a reading of the novels of the period. The French Revolution in itself was indelibly associated with the domestic arena, and, thus, by extension, with women. Again and again in novels of the period, and particularly in women's novels, the stability, or otherwise, of the family reflects the stability of government and of the nation. It was through the medium of the novel that women could enter the debate on revolution, using their novels as means through which to explore many of the dominant social and political issues of the day.

The novel, more often than not set in the family home, was a medium uniquely suited to an exploration of revolutionary ideologies in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The emerging form of the novel offered a unique opportunity for women to present new, challenging perspectives on the revolutionary crisis of the 1790s. The works of Frances Burney, Charlotte Smith, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Robinson, Maria Edgeworth, Mrs Bullock and Jane Austen, all occupy an important place in this debate, and indeed, in the history of the novel. They demonstrate that women were at the forefront of development of the form of the novel itself.

Stephanie Russo is a lecturer at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Her research is focused on the eighteenth-and nineteenth-century novel, focusing particularly on gender, sexuality, politics, the history of ideas, and representations of revolution and counter-revolution. She is co-editor of The French Revolution and the British Novel in the Romantic Period, with A.D. Cousins and Dani Napton, and is currently working on a monograph of the novels of Mary Robinson.

Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2010 9.5 x 12.5 inches hardcover, dust jacket 750 pages
The Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (Dutch East India Company) was for a period of 200 years responsible for the navigation material for the journey between the Netherlands and the Far East and the inter-Asian trade. This book presents a never published before overview of chart material used on a VOC ship. The introduction provides information on the history of the VOC, the chart makers, the routes, and the navigation and instruments. All navigation charts of the VOC in the seventeenth and eighteenth century are drawn on vellum, and described and analyzed in an illustrated cartobibliography. Extracts of the 'groot-journalen' of the 'Kamer Amsterdam' are also included, providing a unique view of the total expenses of the VOC on navigation. Sailing for the East is part ten of the Utrecht Studies on the History of Cartography. Includes 600 full color images, CD-ROM with appendices.

Gunter Schilder graduated from Vienna University and has worked in the Netherlands at the Utrecht University on the history of cartography since 1971. In 1981 he was appointed professor of the history of cartography, a position he continued until his retirement in 2005. Schilder has written numerous publications on the history of Dutch cartography and discoveries, and as a result has agumented the knowledge of and appreciation for Dutch cartography in its Golden Age

Hans D. Kok attended the Dutch Government Civil Aviation Flying Training School and later joined KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines. His interest in navigation and maps stems from his early days of navigating across oceans and polar areas, practising the old techniques, using sextants and other specific navigational instruments. His map collection comprises maps and charts from 1560 till 1800, focusing on the sea-routes from Amsterdam to Jakarta, formerly Batavia, in the Dutch East Indies. He is currently on the Board of Editors of Caert-Thresoor in Holland, and is the Chairman of IMCoS, the International Map Collectors' Society in London.

Nieuwkoop HES & DE GRAAF 1967 8vo cloth. xiv, 257 pages.
Can we learn from history? A timely problem in the light of the recent dramatic developments in the Middle East and the immanent threat of international terrorism. The from time to time uneasy relations between the Christian West and the Islam originate in the seventh and eighth centuries and took shape in the Renaissance when for the first time in history knowledge of the Turks, a synonym of Muslims, was growing fast on the basis of first-hand experience, whether as agents of a western power, or as captives of the Turks. Apart from the unhappy but apparently universal tendency to represent ones enemy as the personification of evil, the fifteenth and early sixteenth western characterizations of the Ottomans as the sworn foe of Christianity are still pervading our concepts and terms, and are still formative for our own views. HES & DE GRAAF Publishers re-issues 'The Shadow of the Crescent,' because the book is concerned with the image of the Turk in the West after the fall of Constantinople till the beginnings of the Reformation and deals with the western attitude toward the Ottomans and the growing importance of the Islam. Certainly the problems were, and still are immense, not exactly the same, but undoubtedly comparable. At least we can learn from this book that there is nothing new under the sun."This book is primarily a survey of European responses, political as well as literary, to the Turkish advance into Europe between the fall of Constantinople and the beginning of the Protestant Reformation" (in: The American Historical Review, vol 74, nr 2 (Dec. 1968)).

`T Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2009 9.75 x 11.5 inches hardcover, dust jacket 272 pages
This book aims to preserve and bring forward for wider appreciation the outstanding works of art that many engraved title pages and frontispieces represent.
Over the time period covered by the present publication - roughly from the 1470s to the 1870s - very many printed books opened with an attractive decorative title page or frontispiece, sometimes both. In this book, a limited selection has been made from the wide field of known title pages, focusing primarily on cartography, geography, history, and topography, together with associated disciplines such as astronomy, travel, and exploration. A selection of 100 main and approximately 70 supplementary entries adequately covers specimens of different styles, formats, and national characteristics over a four-hundred-year period from the late fifteenth century onwards. The choice of decorative title pages and frontispieces includes examples emanating from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands (including Flanders), France, Spain, England, and some later examples published in the United States. Richly illustrated, with many of the title pages presented full page and in full color.

Rodney Shirley was educated at Stowe and at the Universities of Cambridge and Harvard. His main carrer has been in business but for many years he has been a collector and historian of early maps and associated decorative titlepages. He is past president and a current council member of the International Map Collectors' Society. His book The Mapping of the World: Early Printed World Maps 1472-1700 is a standard reference work, as are his two other books on the early maps of the British Isles. More recently, in 2004, he published a detailed descriptive work Maps in the Atlases of The British Library c.850AD-1800. Shirley lives in Buckingham and is married with three grown-up children.

`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2003 8vo cloth, full color dust jacket. 232 pages.
After the famous `Battle of Nieuwpoort' in West Flanders in 1600, another feat of arms was to follow in the same area: the Siege of Ostend, which lasted from 1601 to 1604. Maurits was, yet again, to play the leading role and, despite the fact that the outcome was less of a success for the young Republic of the Seven United Netherlands than the battle of Nieuwpoort had been, the result was a Spanish conquest of a city of total devastation and, by then, wholly depopulated. Nevertheless a considerable impression had been made upon the Northern Netherlands. The most weird and wonderful machines of war had been tested, whilst a variety of new military siege techniques had been brought into play. There was even talk of `the University of Ostend,' with the implication that, from a military perspective, the siege was a very instructive experience. Many, too, were the rumors and the garbled tales that began to circulate soon after the end of the affair. One example was the legend of the soldier in the Spanish army who appeared to be a woman. In this book, Dr. Simoni provides a detailed and stimulating account of the manner of, and the form by which the tales of these shocking occurrences arose soon after the events of the siege had been set down, and immediately went into print after the details had reached the North. These reports were to leave such a lasting impression in the Republic, that `Ostend' became one of the most well known feats of arms in the penultimate stages of the struggle for freedom from Spain. The book is, thus, a brilliant example of the received history of one of the most controversial events of the Eighty Years War. The role of the Leiden printer and publisher, Hendrick van Haestens, stands central to `the Ostend Story.' He provides accounts of the fighting in no less than three publications. Dr. Simoni, in this study, reaches the conclusion that Haestens' reports are deserving of a more important place than they have found thus far. It is mainly to him that we owe the provision of a clear and lively picture of the famous siege. Dr. Simoni has been working over thirty years in the Department of Printed Books in the British Library, where she originated the Netherlands` section. Numerous works from her hand have appeared about books published in the Netherlands. Her natural gifts of generosity and friendship were honored in 1991 with a `Festschrift': Across the narrow seas. Studies in the history and bibliography of Britain and the Low Countries. 27 illustrations.
