New York The Grolier Club 1993 9 x 12 inches paperback 78 pages
In 1893, Daniel Updike founded the Merrymount Press and became a member of the Grolier Club. He printed many of the Club's most attractive publications, and in 1926, he was awarded honorary membership. In 1911, Philip Hofer, founder of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts at Harvard, invited Updike to deliver a series of speeches on the techniques of printing to the Graduate School of Business Administration. These lectures formed the basis for his monumental work on typography, Printing Types, published by Harvard University Press and later by Oak Knoll Press. In 1993, an exhibition was held at the Houghton Library and the Grolier Club showcasing 130 works spanning Updike's career and the life of the Press from 1891 to 1949.

This new publication represents Updike's enduring accomplishments and celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of his press. With 136 works, the catalogue displays the beauty, breadth, and standard set by the Press and its work. It is beautifully illustrated with over forty illustrations and contains a chronology, a list of types used at the Merrymount Press, and a list of commercial publishing houses associated with the Press. See More... Jack Stillinger (editor) LETTERS FROM A WALKING TOUR
Edited by Jack Stillinger New York The Grolier Club 1995 6 x 9 inches hardcover, slipcase 79 pages
During the summer of 1818, John Keats and Charles Brown left Lancaster on a 2,000 mile walking tour of the English Lake District and Scotland. Most likely Brown's idea, he planned to document everything he saw on his trip. He wrote in a letter to a friend, "I have many reasons for going wonder-ways: to make my winter chair free from spleen; to enlarge my vision; to escape disquisitions on poetry and mindless criticism; to promote digestion and economise shoe leather."

This book contains a foreword by Jack Stillinger and twelve letters written during the walking tour. Keats provides striking passages on the mountains, waterfalls, and lakes he experienced on his journey, and he philosophizes on landscape scenery and the imagination. In addition to the twelve letters, a handful of articles Brown wrote after the journey are also included. Some letters are addressed to Tom; George and Georgina (Keat's brother and sister-in-law); his sister Fanny; and John Hamilton Reynolds and Benjamin Bailey (two close friends). Containing detailed nature descriptions, many of the striking passages discuss mountains, waterfalls, and the Lakes of Scotland. Keats also philosophizes on the intellectual tone of the landscape and the relation of scenery to the imagination. The book documents day-to-day experiences mixed with anecdotes, jokes, and puns

The texts of the letters have been modernized in punctuation, spelling, and other nonsubstantive features. Printed on handmade paper, this is the first book in a series to display the arts of fine bookmaking. It includes a portrait frontispiece, a facsimile letter, and a map, all tipped in. The book was designed by Jerry Kelly and printed by Daniel Kelleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress, with the tip-ins printed by the Stinehour Press. It accompanies the exhibition held from September 19 to November 22, 1995, and was a winner of the AIGA Fifty Books of the Year Award.

edited by Eric Holzenberg. New York The Grolier Club 2004 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover 306 pages
The Grolier Club was founded with many roots in French culture, and French themes were present through its production of books and the emphasis on the book as an object. French binders from Paris were instrumental in forming the Club's Bindery, and many of the Club's first publications had notions of French taste.

As the Grolier Club library has continued to grow over the years, French sale catalogues of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have continued to be viewed as particularly valuable. The Club's first acquired French sale catalogue was a copy of the 1679 inventory of the library of the French historian Jacques- Auguste de Thou. Over the years, the collection expanded through acquisitions and donations, especially the large donation of almost 500 French auction sales catalogues from Water S. Davis.

Now, the collection of book sale catalogues is the most heavily used part of the Grolier Club Library among its member and other collectors. Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions is the first book to fully describe French book auction sales between 1643 and 1830. Providing complete title-page transcriptions, page counts, signature statements, lot totals, signature formulas, and identification of consignors and other figures, this book will allow librarians, bookdealers, and collectors to identify and collate catalogues in hand. Each entry describes a printed catalogue of a private library created for the purpose of sale by auction or by private treaty. The catalogue describes 616 items arranged chronologically by date of sale. Notes on contents, general notes, and a final note devoted to aspects unique to the Grolier Club are also included. The book contains a preface by Eric Holzenberg, an appreciation by Edmond L. Lincoln, and an introduction by Michael J. North.

See More... Reese, William S. NINETEENTH CENTURY AMERICAN COLOR PLATE BOOKS
New York The Grolier Club 1999 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover, dust jacket 120 pages
Published in two parts in 1799 and 1800, The City of Philadelphia ...As it Appeared in the Year 1800 by William Birch was the first American color plate book to be published. During the mid 1890s, there was widespread use of the trichromatic half-tone process. This was quickly replaced with new mediums that dominated the twentieth century, providing the basis for this publication. Because production moved from hand-colored plate engravings and lithographs to the development of chromolithography, the nineteenth century shows the birth, rise, and eventual demise of methods of production in the culture of American printed books.

Color in books represented luxury during the nineteenth century. Color was never cheap, and although technology made color plates available to a wider audience, the big color plate books were still only available to the rich because of their high cost. As the demand for color became stronger, publishers were more eager to supply it. To do this, it often meant hand finishing was replaced by mechanical work, and quality was therefore reduced.

This exhibition takes a closer look at the world of lost processes and skills. This book traces the progression of production processes and the careers of some of the leading specialists. Aiming to show the diversity of color plate work among the leading titles, the exhibition displays highlights of the century and provides insight into the tastes and interests of those producing in the nineteenth century. Beautifully illustrated, Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books shows the production techniques used in creating color plate books in America.

ROOMS OF WONDER: FROM WUNDERKAMMER TO MUSEUM, 1599-1899.
An exhibition at the Grolier Club, 5 December 2012-2 February 2013. Curated by Florence Fearrington. New York The Grolier Club 2012 6 x 9 inches paperback 126 pages
First edition, second printing with some corrections. The German term "Wunderkammer" refers to a room full of wondrous things, objects noteworthy for their beauty, or their rarity, or their curious nature, or their artistic, scholarly, or monetary value. Wunderkammers originated as private collections in the 16th century, and proliferated throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, but began to decline when a more systematic approach to the accumulation of natural and man-made objects gave rise to our modern museums of art, culture, and natural history. Published to accompany the exhibition "Rooms of Wonder: from Wunderkammer to Museum, 1599-1899," the book focuses on the beautiful and elaborately illustrated catalogues produced by collectors over three hundred years to celebrate their "cabinets of curiosities."

Introduction by Florence Fearrginton, followed by detailed descriptions for the nearly 140 items on show, most drawn from a private collection, with additional loans from the American Antiquarian Society, the Getty Research Institute Library, and Harvard and Johns Hopkins Universities. Includes index. Minion, Requiem, and Augustea Open types; designed by Jerry Kelly.
