See More... Elliot, Jock A HA! CHRISTMAS: AN EXHIBITION AT THE GROLIER CLUB OF JOCK ELLIOTT'S CHRISTMAS BOOKS
New York The Grolier Club 2000 8.5 x 11 inches paperback 96 pages
Jock Elliot began collecting books after he returned home from World War II. His deep love for Christmas encouraged him to collect books about Christmas in England and America. When he began collecting, he was purchasing one book a month, sometimes even buying new books daily. Now, even as has become more selective in his purchases, he has acquired a collection of more than 3,000 books related to Christmas. Most of his books are first or only editions, and he has purchased other "firsts," including the first illustration of a Christmas tree and the first illustration of St. Nick by Thomas Nast.

This book was created to accompany the exhibition held from December 6, 1999 to January 29, 2000. It traces the historical development of Christmas through 600 years of Christmas books, from a fifteenth-century illuminated miniature of the Nativity to How the Grinch Stole Christmas. All books are from the collection of Jock Elliot. It includes numerous illustrations including book covers and famous pictures presentations. The book was designed by Jerry Kelly and printed by the Stinehour Press.

New York The Grolier Club 2011 8 x 11 inches paperback 100 pages
One hundred books focusing on the anatomy and surgery of the brain, as it evolved up until 1600, are presented in this catalogue. The books included in the exhibition are fundamental works on surgery and anatomy, from which the present scientific field has developed. From the early sixteenth century onward, there were many books devoted to the brain, head injuries, and the skull. There were also many books that were published to guide the surgery necessary to explore the anatomy of the nervous system. Through his collection, Flemm has tried to foster an understanding of what sixteenth-century surgeons thought, what they wore during surgery, instruments used, what was considered innovative, and what ideas led to new developments. Examples of catalogues and bibliographies that list the works are also presented. The book is beautifully illustrated, contains a list of references, and includes an index of names and printers.

New York The Grolier Club 2011 8.5 x 11.5 inches hardcover 118 pages
This volume was produced to accompany an exhibition held at the Grolier Club from December 6, 2011 to February 4, 2012, on the history of the French national typographic and printing establishment, the Imprimerie Nationale, arguably the most important printing house in Europe. Drawn from the ancient, vast, and comprehensive archives of the Imprimerie Nationale, Printing for Kingdom, Empire, & Republic documents the significant influence of the press, not only on printing and the book arts, but also on French - and therefore European - literary culture from the mid-sixteenth century to the present day. The exhibition was organized by The Grolier Club and the Groupe Imprimerie Nationale, S.A., with administrative and organizational support from the Institut Mémoires de l'Édition Contemporaine (IMEC), France's largest archive of authorial and publishing materials.

Edited by Grolier Club member H. George Fletcher (former Astor Curator of Printed Books and Bindings at the Morgan Library & Museum, and retired Brooke Russell Astor Director for Special Collections at The New York Public Library), the catalogue tells the story of the Imprimerie Nationale, from the royal printers established by François I in 1538, to the Imprimerie Royale created by Cardinal Richelieu in 1640, through many generations of development, marked often by artistic innovation and wide cultural influence, but sometimes by distress and neglect, to triumphant survival in the present day. It surveys a wealth of objects, all classified as French monuments historiques, and never before seen outside of France, and including artifacts of various printing processes, such as punches, matrices, and typefonts from the days of François I to the present, as well as engraved plates used to produce illustrations for such renowned works as Louis XIV's Medailles and the Description de l'Égypt commissioned by Napoleon. The catalogue also showcases the books produced at the Imprimerie Nationale, from the scholarly products of the Renaissance in France through the royal folios of the Sun King to the culture-changing works of the twentieth century, and thus to the work of postwar and present-day generations of French book artists. In many instances, original manuscripts, documents, and artwork follow the art, craft, and business of book-making from conception to realization.

Printing for Kingdom, Empire, and Republic contains a foreword by Jack Lang, two separate prefaces by Dider Trutt and Eugene S. Flamm, and an Introduction by H. George Fletcher. It includes historical essays by Isabelle de Conihout, Annie Parent-Charon, and James Mosley and discusses topics such as humanism and typography, Pierre Moreau (Master Scribe and Printer), The Romain du Roi (a type made for the Royal Printing-House of Louis XIV) and more. An annotated checklist of the items on display at the exhibition is followed by the essays. Beautifully illustrated, the book contains five pages of color plates, four plates in collotypes, illustrations of typefaces, and more.

The book has been composed in Monotype Garamond for the text and hand-set Garamond, cast from the original matrices, for the display type, at the Imprimerie Nationale's Atalier du Livre d'Art et de l'Estampe, in Ivrey-sur-Seine, France, and printed there letterpress on Arches Expression texture white 120 g. It was designed by Jerry Kelly.

New York The Grolier Club 1996 8 x 11 inches paperback 386 pages
The Library of Leander van Ess arrived in New York in 1838 and has since then reposed within the library of Union Theological Seminary. The collection was one of the most comprehensive theological libraries in the new world. An important step in nineteenth-century cultural and education history, it created the largest collection of incunabula west of the Atlantic Ocean at the time. Because of this, an exhibition was necessary, and one was held from September 17 to November 23, 1996.

Research for the exhibition revealed there were many books in the collection that reflected on the history of books and libraries in Germany. It also demonstrated that the collector, Leander van Ess, was an important figure for biblical translation as was as for collecting and scholarship. This catalogue explores van Ess's collection of Bibles in a number of languages, works on church history, ecclesiastical law, and medieval manuscripts.

The book is illustrated in black and white with four color illustrations and one colored fold-out plate. It contains contributions by Johannes Altenberend, Milton McC. Gatch and Paul Needham, and includes a brief biography of van Ess with introductory notes to the collection. It is written in both English and German.

Hardison, Brian Davon BURRIANA: A CATALOGUE OF RARE BOOKS, PAMPHLETS, LETTERS, MANUSCRIPTS, DOCUMENTS, & OBJECTS BY, ABOUT, OR RELATING TO AARON BURR AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES.
New York The Grolier Club 2012 6 x 9.25 inches hardcover 306 pages
This book was produced to accompany the exhibition "Aaron Burr Returns to New York," on show at the Grolier Club May 15-July 28, 2012; but it is also a detailed record of all the most important items from Brian Hardisons superb and comprehensive collection of Aaron Burr, Jr., (1756-1836).

Soldier, lawyer, statesman, and the third Vice President of the United States under Jefferson, Burr was also one of the most maligned figures of the founding era, accused of attempting to steal the Presidential election of 1800 from Thomas Jefferson, of murdering Alexander Hamilton in 1804, and of treason in 1807. Yet a careful examination of contemporary documents, including the five hundred plus items described in this catalogue, reveals a far more complex persona, one whose support for womens rights, the arts and the nascent anti-slavery movement were among the most progressive of his time. The documents show a military hero, a highly skilled lawyer, a caring family man, and a great philanthropist, not to mention a very able politician. Hero or villain, Burr was an enormously influential (if controversial) public figure whose impact continues to be felt today.

The catalogue is organized chronologically and focuses on major events in Burrs life, including his role in the first murder trial in United States history, the presidential elections of 1796 and 1800, and his trial for treason. Illustrated in color throughout, the book contains a thirteen-page introduction, useful appendices, and an index.

New York The Grolier Club 2002 8.25 x 10.25 inches hardcover 256 pages
This catalog accompanies an exhibition on medical quackery, tracing its prevalence from the itinerant seller of nostrums four centuries ago to unsolicited spam on the Internet today. Prints by William Hogarth, Honoré Daumier and others highlight the theatrics of the quack at work; posters by Jules Chéret, Maxfield Parrish and their contemporaries illustrate the remarkable artistry with which proprietary medicines once advertised; and works by H.G. Wells, Weir Mitchell and other writers offer a delightful look at the elaborate language once used to promote the quack's wares.

William H. Helfand is the author of five books including Pharmacy: An Illustrated History (co-author David Cowen, Harry N.
