The Samurai Press was founded in 1906 at Ranworth Hall, near Norwich, by Maurice Browne, Harold Marno, and others, with the object of publishing attractive and moderately-priced works of a transcendental nature, chiefly poetry, by young, aspiring, and little-known authors. The Press published 30 books during its lifetime, some of which were hand-printed on the press that was later to be used by Douglas Pepler and Eric Gill at St. Dominic's Press at Ditchling.
This bibliography describes each book published by the Press with a photograph of each title page. This book, limited to an edition of 300 copies, tells the story of Edward Seymour and his firm, The Fancy Paper Company. This British company manufactured marbled and other decorated (fancy) papers for the bookbinding and related industries from about 1919 to 1971. With eighteen illustrations showing their methods and copies of correspondence, and twenty tipped-in, original examples of their many fancy papers, this work is a well-researched text about one of the last English marbled paper manufacturing firms.

Dr. Berger shares with his readers the vicissitudes of the company's fortunes, the personal lives of its owners, and the often touching correspondence he found among its business records. The author also informs us of the salaries, costs of doing business, and the unique demands of bookbinders for the company's products. The work ends with Edward Seymour's valiant efforts to keep the company afloat in the early 1970s.

This edition is published in the best tradition of the fine press book. It was typeset in hot metal, hand printed on 120 gpm, archival paper, and bound in quarter leather with slipcase by the Manoutios Press of Athens, Greece.

There was a time when book collecting was big news. In the first half of the twentieth century, some of America's leading financiers, executives, and philanthropists played "this book-collecting game" (as A. Edward Newton called it) and competed with each other for the finest books and manuscripts in the world. Their booksellers were no less newsworthy, and one of the most astute, knowledgeable, and flamboyant of them all was Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach of Philadelphia. Dr. R, as the press liked to call him, helped to build some of America's greatest collections, and his own library, assembled from the treasures that he took home for himself rather than put into his stock, still draws visitors and researchers from around the world.

Dr. Rosenbach and Mr. Lilly: Book Collecting in a Golden Age is the story of one collector, Josiah Kirby Lilly, Jr., of Indianapolis, and the books and manuscripts that he bought from Dr. Rosenbach. The story is told through the many letters that they exchanged, and through the descriptions and illustrations of the books and manuscripts themselves. Mr. Lilly assembled a collection of some twenty thousand books in American literature and on historical Americana throughout the course of his collecting career. He bought books from a number of booksellers, but Rosenbach sold Lilly some of the best books and manuscripts in his collection. Rosenbach and Lilly were both personally interested in literature and Americana, and while Lilly was a conservative businessman who was usually very methodical in his acquisitions, Rosenbach's enthusiasm, which was well supported by his knowledge and experience, enticed Lilly to make some uncharacteristically large purchases during the two decades of their relationship.

This book focuses on the intersection of the two men and their business relationship from the 1920s through the 1940s. Though this book is the story of only one collector and bookseller, it is also a microcosm of a great age of book collecting, in which choices were made by booksellers and collectors alike that shaped the contents of some of the greatest research libraries of our own day.

Dr. Rosenbach and Mr. Lilly was first published in 2010 in a limited edition by Bird & Bull Press. This new trade edition retains Henry Morris's superb design and adds a new preface, additional illustrations, and an index. A sixteen page section of color plates is also included.

While preparing an exhibition to accompany the 1997 Dartmouth Book Arts Summer Workshop, "Joseph Blumenthal and the Spiral Press," Mr. Cronenwett discovered that there was no standard bibliography of The Spiral Press. Since that time, Mr. Cronenwett has exhaustively researched and examined the holdings of many collections to compile this checklist of more than 600 items. The bibliography lists the press's monographs, pamphlets, exhibition catalogs and all publications relating to printing arts. This APHA publication will be an important research tool to literary and printing history scholars and collectors.

The significance of The Spiral Press to American letters and cultural history is underscored by the items listed in the bibliography. Joseph Blumenthal designed and printed for Robert Frost, W. H. Auden, Pablo Neruda, William Carlos Williams, Robinson Jeffers and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Institutions counted among the press's clients were The Metropolitan Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Morgan Library, The Grolier Club and The American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The press is also extremely significant to printing history in America. As a printer, Joseph Blumenthal set standards that are unequalled for dedication to the details of fine printing and design. His proprietary typeface, Spiral, was admired by the Monotype Corporation and adapted as "Emerson" for commercial book composition. In his later years, Blumenthal prepared a series of exhibitions on fine printing in America and Europe. He wrote and taught, sharing his passion for the book. To him the book was "a prime cultural heritage. Poetry, knowledge and the aspirations of mankind have been spread by the book to the whole of society."

The book has 196 pages containing more than two dozen reproductions of Spiral Press pages. These are offset-printed, in additional colors where appropriate, at the Studley Press. The book is casebound in a fine imported cloth over boards and issued in an edition of 500 copies.

Set up in 1968, John Fuller's Sycamore Press published some of the most influential and critically acclaimed writers of the past half-century. Operating from a garage, the press published established authors, such as W. H. Auden, Philip Larkin and Peter Porter, as well as promoting young poets, including James Fenton and Alan Hollinghurst. The Sycamore Press ceased operations in 1992, but it remains an excellent example of the unique qualities associated with the small press movement in England.

In addition to a full descriptive bibliography, the book includes an evocative foreword by John Fuller, who wryly describes the trials and tribulations of 'garage' publishing. In a transcribed interview with the author, John Fuller explains why a pamphlet of poems took almost a year to produce as he experimented with letterpress technology. Personal reflections by Sycamore Press authors, such as Andrew Motion and Thom Gunn, illuminate the publishing process further and show what a powerful role John Fuller played in the lives of young poets lucky enough to be published by him.

While this book is full of entertaining anecdotes about the hazards of small book publishing, it also provides invaluable advice for small press printers.

This bibliography documents the career of the Village Press with meticulous detail and insight. In a short memoir at the beginning of this book, Frederic W. Goudy gives an account of a printer's life that is certain to be familiar to anyone who has experienced the "fun and fury" of a private press. The section from the diary of Will Ransom, co-founder of the press, gives some idea of the magnitude of the initial problems that were encountered. Despite these difficulties, the press still produced books that were an able tribute to William Morris, in many ways Goudy's chief inspiration in book design. However, the press was no mere imitation of the Kelmscott Press - in the years of its operation it forged a style that was distinctly Goudy's. Frederic W. Goudy was one of the most influential type designers of the twentieth century. His influence on advertising art and book design was considerable, and he became an arbiter of typographic taste for an entire generation between the Wars. Part of the reason for this success lay with his practical knowledge of the problems of designer and printer. Much of this expertise was gained through the Village Press. This book was originally published in 1938 in a limited edition of only 260 copies.

Limited to 850 copies and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the press of W. Thomas Taylor. Adrian Wilson (1923-1988) was internationally known as a designer and printer of fine books. During his career, he produced over 200 titles, authored a standard text, The Design of Books for his field, wrote two important scholarly books on early printing and manuscripts, and inspired the friendship of a wide circle of fellow bibliophiles around the world. Less well-known is that Wilson was a conscientious objector during the Second World War and that he learned the rudiments of printing in a work camp at Waldport, Oregon, to which he was assigned. When Wilson left home to attend Wesleyan University in September 1941, he began to write long, intimate letters to his parents, almost daily, describing his life at college, his growing involvement with pacifists there and his struggle to decide on a course of action. These letters are now published for the first time here in this work designed by Jerry Kelly and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the Press of W. Thomas Taylor.

Jacob Bigelow's American Medical Botany, published in three volumes between 1817 and 1821 and containing sixty colored plates, occupies a unique place in American book printing and book illustration. Of all the books published in the United States before the mid-nineteenth century introduction of chromolithography, it was the only one to have its plates mechanically printed in color, not colored by hand in the usual manner of the day.

Richard J. Wolfe's classic study of this seminal work, issued initially in 1979 and now reissued in a revised and augmented edition, has made use of Dr. Bigelow's previously unavailable manuscript papers and other previously unknown or little known records to come up with some startling conclusions. His investigations show that Dr. Bigelow's original plan was to have his plates colored by hand by artists. But this plan proved overly ambitious and the project faced failure. So, he and those working with him invented a method of printing the book's plates on stone in a simple manner that prefigured and predated chromolithography by about two decades, thus enabling him to bring his projected work to a successful conclusion. Wolfe's investigation of the origin, printing, binding, and distribution through subscription of this signal work also constitutes an important case study of the production, from conception to completion, of a significant book of that early period.

The 1979 edition of Wolfe's work went out of print quickly. As in that edition, this second edition contains, tipped in, two of Bigelow's original plates, one left uncolored and one colored by hand. These plates were rendered obsolete when the doctor and his cohorts discovered a novel way of printing them in color.

First edition. The first volume in the Winchester Bibliographies of Twentieth Century Writers series. The full stature of Leonard Woolf can only be appreciated by an awareness of all his writings and of the influence he exerted in the first half of this century. His book, International Government became one of the formative influences on the League of Nations; through his writings, he became the architect of the Labour Party's often enlightened foreign policy between the Wars; through his literary editorship of the New Statesman and his founding of the Political Quarterly, his integrity and clear thinking were widely manifest. Woolf's excellent judgement as the publisher at the Hogarth Press was no better shown than by his early awareness of the importance of Freud's ideas, whose complete works were published by the Press in translation. This bibliography of all Woolf's publications will certainly increase our appreciation of his abilities both as a writer and thinker. There are four main sections to the bibliography: Books and Pamphlets, Contributions to Books and Pamphlets, Contributions to Periodicals (of which there are approx. 1,000), and Manuscript Collections. There is also a chronology of Woolf's life and main works plus three appendices on various aspects of his writing.
