Despite a certain restriction in pictorial subjects (the Fleece Inn, the Golden Fleece Inn, the Hare and Hounds of Keighly, the Hare and Hounds of Halifax. etc.), this project involved researching the history of the names, and each sign had to be pictorally unique. Illustrated with 20 individual engravings.

First edition, no limitation stated but Bradbury says 100 copies (Bradbury, Log-Anne, 21). This little volume presents brief biographies of famous fictional and real pirates from the Spanish Main between the years 1650 and 1850. Each entry is followed by a short commentary that reveals an irreverant sense of humor; for example, Blackbeard's "looks and manner frightened all who opposed him, until he was hung for his many crimes." The footnote reads "His looks didn't save him." Further, Mary Read is described as "chaste and pretty as a picture, yet as hard as nails. She demanded, and got, strict obedience from her crew." The footnote reads "Who said weaker sex". Each entry is accompanied by a portrait of the pirate. Printed in burgundy throughout. Dust jacket and title labels printed in red. Signed by the author in the front free endpaper.
