First edition. When Edward Ardizzone passed away in 1979, he was one of the best-loved artists (and authors) in the English-speaking world. He illustrated more than 200 books and pamphlets, a good number of which he also wrote, as well as designed dust jackets and ephemera for a range of patrons. Brian Alderson first published a checklist of this work in The Private Library in 1972. Cope, Peter & Dawn DEAN'S RAG BOOKS & RAG DOLLS

Peter Cope trained as a graphic designer at the Central School of Art & Design in the 1960s and during that time became interested in the late-19th and 20th century book illustration. His career in design has spanned forty years, during which time he created corporate identities of many national and international organizations and taught typography in universities and art colleges around the United Kingdom. He is not focusing on writing and designing books.

Dawn Cope's love and literature and sense of history was instilled into her at an early age. Memories of books read in her formative years, an interst in illustration and a spell as a book dealer led to a fascination for researching the lives and backgrounds of children's book illustrators. In 1980 their collection of children's illustrated postcards, and ephemera went on display at the Museum of Childhood, Bethnal Green. 20 years later, in 2000, they produced Postcards from the Nursery which chronicles children's postcards published between 1900 and 1940, accompanied by short biographies of many popular children's artists.

In 2001 the opportunity arose to research the now dispersed archive of the Dean's Rag Book Company with the kind permission of its owners Neil Miller and his wife Barbara. As well as manufacture's samples of rag books and toys, they found in the collection original contracts, catalogues, ephemeral leaflets and scrap books full of contemporary cuttings revealing the acclaim with which rag books were received in their heyday by the press and public alike.

In this volume and its accompanying DVD, Peter and Dawn record in detail the fascinating range of over 350 Dean's Rag Books published before World War II, created by some of the best-loved artists of the day, along with Dean's 'Knockabout Toy Scheets' and around 2500 toys and dolls from the same period.

First edition. This wonderful exhibition catalogue highlights a myriad of works illustrated and written by this celebrated children's book writer and artist. This exhibition covers the first time Sendak's original works were shown in Asia, beginning in October 1996 at Maruzen Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan, travelling in December to Kyoto and Nagoya and then to Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok, Thailand in January of 1997. Illustrating more than eighty books, Sendak's original drawings are in constant demand by private collectors everywhere. Nearly all of his artwork is archived at the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia. Past loan exhibits have been presented at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, while commercial galleries have offered modest shows with work on loan from the artist. Significant drawings are rarely ever offered for sale, especially his highly finished pencil studies which precisely detail both concept and development of his designs or alternate visions closely resembling his published pictures but are just a bit different. This catalogue contains Sendak's pictures, original prints and posters designs presented for the first time in Asia. Many of these drawings have never been offered for public sale anywhere and are of high quality and importance, covering more than thirty-five years of creativity. This is an essential guide for any devotee of Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit and of illustrators of childrens books during this period. Illustrated with eight pages of color photographs, this bibliography contains over 300 entries published between 1904 and 1980. It seeks to describe all titles published in the United States that are versions of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, or use the name of Peter Rabbit, and were not authorized by Frederick Warne.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first issued privately in a total of 450 copies by Beatrix Potter and was then published by Frederick Warne in 1902. Obtaining copyright in the USA at that time was fraught with difficulties, particularly for foreign publishers. Warne failed to comply with the formalities, and the book entered the public domain in the USA. The book immediately became a huge commercial success throughout the world and has remained that way ever since. Between 1904 and 1980, about 80 publishers issued their own versions of the story.

In many cases the text and/or illustrations did not follow Potters originals, and others were credited as the author and illustrator. Some books are to be regarded as derivatives of the well-known story. The books are arranged alphabetically by publisher, and entries detail publisher, illustrator, title page, binding, and more. Following the bibliography is a list of further readings, and indexes of titles, authors and illustrators.

This book is a bibliography of photographically illustrated children's books in the field of American and international juvenile literature from 1854 to 1945. It details books that were illustrated with original photographs or related-mechanical processes, and describes author and title, as well as provides an index of photographers, illustrators, and reproduction processes linked to specific books. The collection reveals a parallel of the evolving artistic trends and the history of photography through its organization in chronological order. These trends include salted paper print, the albumen print, the carbon print, the platinum print, the silver print, and the gravure print to the halftone, from black-and-white to color. Ranging from amateur to art, each style of the 1,421 books presented has resulted in the creation of an illustration to tell a story.

There are three levels of description throughout the bibliography which vary depending on the date of publication. Children's books published between 1854 and 1895 include full, detailed entries; those between 1896 and 1914 include slightly less detailed entries; and those between 1915 and 1946 include outlined entries. Although the main list of the bibliography ends in 1945, there is an additional list of children's books to 1995 with illustrations by recognizable photographers within the art community. A preface written by photographer, Duane Michals, is included and White has also provided an historical overview of the field of photographically illustrated children's books.

Mus White was born in Denmark and is the author of the novel Jasmine in My Hand (2006).
