The very words "gold-tooled bindings" bring to mind beauty, brilliance, and luxury. Gold-tooling is one of the most visible and striking of all the traditional techniques, but it has been less evident with each passing decade. This occasion gave binders the opportunity to show what they were still capable of. While enjoying the beauty of the bindings in this collection and reflecting on the skilled craftsmanship that has gone into making them, one soon regrets that this kind of work is such a rarity. By the end of the twentieth century, the number of hand-binders who regularly produced gold-tooled bindings had dwindled dramatically from even only 25 years earlier. This exhibition, which travelled from The British Library to the Rochester Institute of Technology and the San Francisco Library in the first half of 1997, and this catalogue, as a tribute to Bernard Middleton, will be successful if it encourages hand-binders to use more gold-tooling and lettering on their bindings and if it demonstrates to collectors and connoisseurs of fine bindings that beautiful gold-tool bindings will continue if there is a demand for them.

Edward Walker was the proprietor of the largest bookbinding establishment in New York City in the middle of the nineteenth century. His firm produced edition binding services for institutional libraries and offered custom bindings for collectors and scholars. This book describes the workings of the Walker bindery, explaining how books were bound and how the bindery was organized. Originally published in 1850, this is the first book written by an American on the subject of bookbinding. Oak Knoll's edition contains a lengthy new introduction by Paul Koda. Hand bookbinding in the United States has been influenced primarily by the English, French, and German schools of binding. German techniques move in a logical sequence and can be executed efficiently. The heart of this working guide is the three chapters dealing with techniques and the chapter on conservation. "Basic Techniques" details the fundamental skills that are applicable to all hand bookbinding. "General Techniques" includes those practices that, with minor variations, cover the early stages in all types of bindings. "Specific Techniques" describes the steps primarily used in producing a specific type of hand binding. The basic principles of conservation work cover one of the more important areas in the field of hand bookbinding today. All instructions throughout this book have been tested at the bench by at least one person, in addition to the author, for clarity and completeness. Where feasible, a list of materials needed precedes the step-by-step instructions for a given section or techniques. These lists will allow the binder to gather together all materials and equipment to be used before beginning work on any phase of the project. An exhibition of 45 works by innovative French bookbinder de Gonet was held in New York from May 16 to June 16, 1987. According to Jan van der Marck in the introduction, innovation is a radical attack on the continuity of thought and action that distinguishes culture and informs tradition. There are two ways in which to detect it: by deduction and induction. The former requires that we search for a break in an evolving stylistic configuration much as we would for a stoppage of leak in a pipeline. The latter proceeds by the intuitive recognition of a sea change, and the ability to pinpoint evidence from clues. At first blush, de Gonet's ingeniously crafted or industrially produced covers resemble the lid of a roll top box or the dash of a racing car. These unsubtle clues that somebody is playing hard and fast with the bookbinders tradition are the unchallengeable evidence of innovation. Black and white illustrations.

The history of the book trade in Medieval London before the age of print has long remained a matter of speculation. Few records survive that name the book artisans and entrepreneurs involved with this early trade venture or that document directly their methods of producing books and creating markets for them. In this directory, C. Paul Christianson assembles an extensive body of alternative data drawn from archival documents that identifies 262 participants in the London trade during a period of 200 years. This group includes stationers, manuscript artisans (called limners), textwriters, bookbinders, parchment sellers, and other London citizens active in book production and sale. Curated by Susan Danforth, the exhibition that formed the basis for this catalogue demonstrated how the urge to collect, preserve, and ultimately share books can, however subtly, affect the physical character of the book itself. With a focus on acquisitions made in the nineteenth century - including several made by founder John Carter Brown - this exhibition uses selections from the Library collection to illustrate some of the effects that taste and trends in book collecting have had on the book as an object.

Some typical practices of the era-such as the use of book brands, ink library stamps on title pages and elaborate bindings-did not affect the integrity of the book as an expression of an idea, but according to Danforth, other practices are more problematic. The nineteenth-century collector's acceptance of "sophistication" (the gathering together of bits and pieces of several copies of a publication to make one "complete" volume) is a concern to scholars interested in textual integrity. Similarly, the use of carefully constructed facsimiles to complete imperfect books encouraged the specialized talents of artists and printers; the work of these skilled craftsmen could fool the eye of the casual observer and sometimes cause consternation in scholars' and collectors' circles. Knowledge of these past practices is helpful to today's scholars who use rare books as research material.

The JCB exhibition has been grouped into four broad categories: identification, embellishment, restoration, and an exploration of the challenges presented by facsimiles. Among the items on display are long-collected books published by Aldus Manutius and Theodor DeBry, as well as a section on the Aldines. The latter group of special books was actively collected as early as the sixteenth century and just as enthusiastically presented to the buying public in forged editions.

This volume offers a new edition of Andrea Krupp's groundbreaking article, which first appeared in the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, and includes an expanded Catalogue of Bookcloth Grains, with illustrations in a larger format and, for the first time, in color.
