See More... (Bookbinding) Middleton, Bernard C. A HISTORY OF ENGLISH CRAFT BOOKBINDING TECHNIQUE.
Foreword by Howard M. Nixon. New Castle and London Oak Knoll Press & The British Library 1996 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xiii, (i), 372 pages followed by 14 plates.
Fourth edition. This is a classic reference work about decorative and commercial English bookbinding techniques written by one of the foremost experts on bookbinding. Each chapter covers various aspects of bookbinding techniques as well as historical information. Each of the chapters describes the material of leaves and folding, beating and pressing, sewing endpapers, gluing the spine, rounding and backing, boards and their attachment, edge-trimming and decoration, headbands, back linings, covering, finishing siding and pasting down, equipment, book repairs and restoration. The book also includes appendices covering a variety of topics. Several sections describe the background and history of the London bookbinding trade around the beginning of the 19th century, its working conditions, and the growth of its binderies. Other sections discuss the specialization in book-edge gilding, the Arts & Crafts movement's influence on bookbinding styles, and the causes and prevention of leather decay. This book is an excellent background for those interested in the English technique. Illustrated with plates.

See More... (Bookbinding) Oldham, J. Basil BLIND PANELS OF ENGLISH BINDERS
Cambridge University Press 1958 folio blue cloth, dust jacket. xv, 56 pages of text followed by 67 plates.
First edition. (S-K 4230, Brenni no.824). Companion volume to the author's 1952 book, English Blind-Stamped Bindings. Together the two volumes present an exhaustive study of this decorative element in English bookbinding from the mid-15th to mid-17th centuries. In the present work, the author defines "panels," indicates inclusive dates when they were used in England, and gives his criteria of "Englishness." In addition to discussing artists and binders, such as Wynkyn de Worde, Jacobus Illuminator, and Richard Faques, among others, he reproduces all the different types of panels that are known and gives them an intelligent system of classification: Acorn; Animal; Biblical; Heraldic and Rose are just a few. Sixty-seven handsomely produced black and white plates depict some 250 panels. Jacket chipped and soiled with tape repairs at spine ends. Ownership inscription in pencil.

Illustrated Mainly from Photographs by the late P.W. Pilcher. N.P. Printed for the Librarian of Shrewsbury School at the University Press, Oxford 1943 small folio white cloth spine with red cloth sides. xl, 183 pages with frontispiece and 62 plates.
S-K 1139. Limited to only 200 numbered copies, one of the rarities of bookbinding reference books. (Brenni no. 773). This library was founded in the 16th century and had grown to about 7000 volumes when Oldham wrote this book. The bindings are especially impressive and include a large number of early English bindings that had been bound expressly for the school library by early English binders. Oldham comments in his introduction on methods of distinguishing English from foreign bindings. All the bindings illustrated are gilt stamped or blind-stamped; plates showing just rubbings of specific tools follow the plates of bindings to help the reader follow Oldham's logic in assigning specific tools to specific binders. Creme-colored spine is slightly age darkened with spots at heel.
