See More... (Bookbinding) Broomhead, Frank THE ZAEHNSDORFS (1842-1947), CRAFT BOOKBINDERS.
Pinner Private Libraries Association 1986 8vo. cloth. 109 pages.
First edition. A fascinating history of this well-known firm of English bookbinders. Zaehnsdorfs was founded on the skill and perseverance of an immigrant binder and, for over one hundred years, adhered to his tenets of fine workmanship. This study provides a historical survey of the three successive generations of the Zaehnsdorf family. It also discusses several Zaehnsdorf bindings and their conservation and restoration work, which was such an important part of the firm's activities. Well-illustrated.

With an introduction by Robert D. Fleck. New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Books 1989 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. (iv), xviii, (4), 172; x, 52 pages.
See S-K 7060 and 7074. Reprints Binding Variants in English Publishing 1820-1900(1932) and More Binding Variants(1938) in one volume. The first title was originally the sixth volume in the highly regarded ten volume Bibliographiaseries edited by Michael Sadleir. Along with Sadleir's The Evolution of Publishing Binding Styles, 1770-1900it has become one of the most difficult titles to procure. More Binding Variantsoriginally appeared in paper wrappers as part of a series entitled Aspects of Book-Collectingand has proven to be more elusive than the original work. These two important works trace the history of the development of the bindings with emphasis on how detective work can often yield interesting conclusions on the priority of issue for both the bibliographer and collector. The general study is followed by specific examples of Carter's research applied to an array of nineteenth century first editions. Included are works by Ainsworth, Bronte, Browning, Carroll, Collins, Dickens, Hunt, Meredith, Shelley, Stevenson, Trollope, and many others. Carter's comments on methods of dating bindings, library bindings, jobbing and remainder publishers, and other curious aspects of publishers' bindings are essential in the study of this subject. With 16 black and white illustrations. Jacket scuffed at bottom.

See More... (Bookbinding) CATALOGUE OF A SELECTED PORTION OF THE FAMOUS LIBRARY PRINCIPALLY OF FINE BINDINGS, RARE ENGRAVINGS, ILLUSTRATED BOOKS, AND FRENCH LITERATURE FORMED BY THE LATE MORTIMER SCHIFF, ESQ. OF NEW YORK CITY.
3 volumes London Sotheby & Co. 1938 8vo. stiff green paper wrappers. 554, (12) pages.
Auction catalogues of the library of fine bindings and illustrated books from the library of Mortimer Schiff (1877-1931), Sotheby, London, March, July, and December 1938 (Blogie III, 23-25; VII, 5-7; XII, 6-9), 2476 lots. Nothing comparable with these bindings had "been seen in London since the Holdford Sale more than ten years earlier." The real strength of the library is in the 18th century. Probably never since the Hamilton Palace Sale have so many examples of the inlaid binding of the period been offered for sale in London, culminating in Louis Douceur's emblematically tooled binding on Daphnis and Chloe and the amazing chinoiserie signed Monnier, the most elaborate binding of the period known to us. The auction proved to be disastrous for the heirs. The only beneficiaries were collectors like Lessing J. Rosenwald, who through Rosenbach, found it possible to obtain rare bindings and illustrated folios for bargain prices (Dickinson, p.282). Each volume illustrated throughout in black and white and color (121 plates). Front inside hinge broken of volume one and covers and spine loose from binding; tear in title page with a piece detached. Ink stamp of B.F. Stevens & Brown Ltd. on front covers of volume two and three
