See More... (Bookbinding) Koch, Jeanette (editor) BOUND FOR SUCCESS: CATALOGUE FOR DESIGNER BOOKBINDERS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2009
Oxford Bodleian Library 2009 7.75 x 10.75 inches hardcover 98 pages
One of the foremost bookbinding societies in the world, Designer Bookbinders is devoted to the craft of fine bookbinding. The society is dedicated to preserving and improving the craft and design of fine bookbinding through the encouragement, exercise, and maintenance of standards. It also focuses on the promotion of public interest in the area of fine bookbinding by means of exhibitions, public lectures, classes, and an annual bookbinding competition.

The annual bookbinding competition has run since 1975. In 2009, the society organized its first ever international competition, as it had previously only been opened to entrants working in Britain. The competition is based on a set book, which is the text for which the participants form their binding. This allows the binder to interprete the text and be inventive with the structure.

Bound for Success showcases the winners of the 2009 international competition of Designer Bookbinders. The set book for the competition was Water from the Incline Press, a book that incorporates original prints by Clare Curtis, Bert Eastman, Rigby Graham, Eric Hasse, and Paul Kershaw. The first and second prize winner have been given a page spread each displaying their binding and a short description of the materials and the inspiration for the design. Beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs of each binding, the book also lists and describes 117 other entrants' bookbindings in the competition, highlighting the distinguished winners. A catalogue of many non-exhibitors is also included. The book concludes with a glossary of bookbinding terms and an index of entrants organized by country.

See More... (Bookbinding) Lindsay, Jen105519 FINE BOOKBINDING: A TECHNICAL GUIDE
New Castle, Delaware, and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2009 9 x 9.75 inches paperback 216 pages
The purpose of this book is to guide the reader through the sequence of operations involved in creating a book bound in leather, or a "fine binding." The author defines a fine binding as a book fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed endpapers, gilt edges, and leather doublures. Although a basic knowledge of bookbinding terms and techniques is assumed, this book is meant for both novice and experienced bookmakers.

The book is intended to be used as an active guide during the process of fine binding. It is arranged into sixteen sections, listing the sequence of operations, beginning with preliminary work and ending with preparing and putting in leather doublures. Each section includes appropriately numbered instructions allowing the user to find his or her place in the sequence of operations with a reference for what step is next. There are also numbered explanatory sections that include a rationale (why you do it) and technique (how you do it). The work includes close to 300 black and white illustrations, four appendices, and a bibliography.

Jen Lindsay is a bookbinder with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and writing on bookbinding and the history of the book. She first studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, London (1977-1979), and then worked as a freelance bookbinder. She was a bookbinding tutor and Program Convener for the BA Bookbinding and BA Calligraphy programs at Roehampton Institute, West London (1983-2001) and then bookbinding tutor at The City Literary Institute, London (2001-2005).
