First edition, with errata slip tipped-in at page 268 (Fleck A. 4.A.1a.1). The jacket appears in two states; the first has no printing on the covers except for the spine while the second has printing on the front cover. This is a copy of the first state. This was the first book in a series of books written by Newton on book-collecting and remains a classic book in its field. This copy bears the following inscription on the front free endpaper "To Anna Gable Ford, with love and Christmas greetings from her father, William F. Gable, Altoona, Pennsylvania, Dec. 25th, 1918. See McKay 8643 for the sale of William Gable's library in 1923. Gable (1856-1921) was a noted collector and merchant. The front cover of the jacket is signed "Anna Katharine" in ink at the top edge. Jacket worn with tears and the bottom of the spine lacking. Extremely scarce in this first state jacket.

Over forty catalogues from the Dutch subscription agent and book dealer Martinus Nijhoff, produced over a fifty year period. Martinus Nijhoff was founded in The Hague in 1853. It began as a small shop specializing in rare books and broadened in the ensuing years to include supplying and procuring books for academic libraries. Catalogues are printed in either Dutch, English, German or French. With special issues devoted to industrial art and architecture, Netherlandish history, and Dutch East India, among other topics. Two catalogues were specially printed for Mr. W. Nijhoff's sales trip to the U.S. in the 1930s. Martinus Nijhoff remains in business, though it is now owned by Brill Academic Publishers.

Rapilly's customers included the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Bibliothèque Nationale. Rear board detached on Volume one. Some early pages have also detached. Text in French. Large lot of publications from the mid-century Geneva bookseller Nicolas Rausch. All of these titles were printed in limited editions, generally numbering between 1,000 and 1,500 copies. Includes sales catalogues printed between 1948 and 1961, numbered 1 through 7; auction catalogues from 1952-1962, numbered 1-33 (no. 2 missing), bound in eight volumes, with three additional catalogues from the early 1960s in stiff paper wrappers and three slim bulletins. Contains detailed descriptions of thousands of books. Rausch dealt in books dating from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, and his catalogues are arranged chronologically. He also published several special sales catalogues devoted to topics including incunabula, almanacs, botany and natural history books, artists and the book. With copious reproductions of bindings, facsimile pages, and book illustrations, many of which are in color, some are folded. Auctions include the sales of the libraries of W.S. Kundig and Silvain S. Brunschwig. Not limited to books, the auctions also detail the sales of antiquities, architectural drawings, maps, early photography, prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture. Auction results are loosely inserted into the catalogues. Each catalogue is indexed.
