Erlesenes und Erlebtes; Buch-Miniaturen, Zweite Folge; Buch-Miniaturen, Dritte Folge; Buch-Miniaturen, Vierte Folge Berlin Galerie Gerd Rosen (1957); (1958); 1959; 1960 4to. stiff paper wrappers 12; 11(+1); (ii),39(+1); (ii),54 pages
This volume contains four special issues from Galerie Gerd Rosen in Berlin. The first commemorated the lawyer and book collector Otto Deneke, who had died the previous year, and includes original contributions from Rudolf Alexander Schröder (memories of Deneke and Rudolf Borchardt) and from Alfred von Klement, recently deceased senator of the Halkyonischen Akademie, as well as material taken from the gallery's auction catalogue number 29. The second commemorated the author Dr. Kurt Messow and contained primarily material taken from auction catalogue 30. The articles in the third came mostly from auction catalogues 31 and 32. The fourth expands on material from auction catalogues 33 and 34. The colophons indicate that all were issued in limited editions (200; 200; 150; and 150 copies) for friends of the gallery and, in the first two cases, for members of the "Berlin Bibliophiles' Evening" group. Printed on hand-made paper (parts 2-4 on Gravis-Bütten) at the Druckerei Max Lichtwitz. Includes black-and-white illustrations, some tipped-in. Wrapper shows modest soiling and wear. There is evidence of a one quarter cloth (or tape) spine covering, which is now missing.

See More... Gatch, Milton McC. THE LIBRARY OF LEANDER VAN ESS AND THE EARLIEST AMERICAN COLLECTIONS OF REFORMATION PAMPHLETS.
BSA Occastional Publications, No.1 New York The Bibliographical Society of America 2007 8.5 x 11 inches paperback 212 pages
Reformation pamphlets (or "Flugschriften") were among the first rare book acquisitions of American libraries. Gatch traces the remarkable history of the Leander van Ess collection purchased by the Union Theological Seminary in 1838, the first and largest collection of these religious tracts to arrive in America. He notes how they were originally obtained by van Ess, a Catholic priest, translator of the Bible, and a former Benedictine monk, who built an impressive personal collection of books and manuscripts when monastic libraries were being dispersed during the Napoleonic wars. Gatch has also identified a significant group of pamphlets assembled at Wittenberg during the 1520s, Luther's most creative period. Never before accurately described, the surviving pamphlets from this collection are listed here in the order of van Ess's own catalogue, with a set of indexes to authors and printers, and with concordances to major bibliographical resources. Gatch reviews the history Reformation pamphlet collecting in the United States from these earliest efforts up to the beginning of the twentieth century, and reflects on how these primary resources were used (or neglected) by American church historians. An extensive bibliography and a detailed index of the introductory essays are included. Illustrated. Distributed for the Bibliographical Society of America.

3 volumes: Teil I--Germanische und deutsche Sprachwissenschaft und Altertumskunde, Althochdeutsch, Mittelhochdeutsch, Niederdeutsch (Bücher-Katalog 456); Teil II--Nordische und englische Kulturgeschichte, Sprache und Literatur, Gotisch, Friesisch, Niederländisch, Keltisch (Bücher-Katalog 457); Teil III--Deutsche Literatur von der Mitte des XV. bis zum XX. Jahrhundert (Bücher-Katalog 458) Leipzig Otto Harrassowitz 1935 8vo. stiff paper wrappers 218,(2); 188; and 166 pages
These three bookseller's catalogues feature 4306, 3875, and 3490 items respectively. (Blogie 442, but does not list vol. 3) The exteriors of this set show generally minor soiling and wear, but the spines are chipped at the head and tail, and the uppermost inch of the second volume spine wrapper is torn. Each volume has a contemporary date stamped on the front. Inside, the pages have darkened and become fragile at the edges. Some chips have been lost from corners (or a few from edges) but the text is intact. A loosely laid-in plate indicates that this set came from the reference library and stock of H. P. Kraus.
