Handbook with prices for antiquarian book sellers and collectors. The cloth of this copy has split at the joints. The upper portion of the spine has pulled away from the book block. Someone has attempted to repair the front joint with clear tape. The cover also has darkened unevenly, shows some soiling and is worn at the corners. The gilding is still present on the upper edges but barely. A penned signature of a former owner (Sarah Dickson) appears on the front free endpaper. The leaves have darkened and become brittle at the edges and near the front and back of the book. The half-title is loose but present; the title page is barely attached. A few leaves have lost fragments at the edges.

The combined work includes well over 3620 entries dealing with North and South (and Central) America and the Philippines. The first catalogue was issued in 1867. Batterham, David AMONG BOOKSELLERS: TALES TOLD IN LETTERS TO HOWARD HODGKIN

First edition. For over thirty-five years bookseller David Batterham has been going on book buying trips abroad and describing his journeys in letters written to artist Howard Hodgkin. This book contains the letters he wrote that reveal his traveling adventures and his buying interest and history. The visitable bookseller, a fast disappearing breed, is immortalized in this text. Lighthearted, entertaining, and charming, this book is intended to amuse rather than instruct.

Travelling around France, Spain, Portugal, America, Denmark, Holland, and Finland, Batterham wrote letters to Hodgkin to keep himself occupied since he mostly traveled on his own. The letters presented in this book begin in August 1970 and continue until January 2006. Describing his daily activities, conversations he had with acquaintances along the way, his plans for seeing new shops and buying books, and much more, the letters encompass Batterham's entire travelling and book-buying experience. He wrote mostly during the evenings when book shops were closed, many times in a local café with a drink in hand. As he states, his mission was to collect books that "one can enjoy without having to read," including trade catalogues, fashion magazines, and other illustrated journals, typography, political caricatures, and architectural pattern books. As he didn't have a shop, he worked on the theory that if he only bought things he liked himself, he would eventually find enough catalogue customers who shared his tastes.

Filled with humorous and fun tales of the life of a bookseller, this book is an enjoyable and delightful read. The sixth and last part of this famous sale (Blogie 341). Édouard Rahir (1862-1924) was a well-known antiquarian bookseller, bibliographer, and publisher in Paris (for a time the publisher for the Société des Bibliophiles François). He had a long-standing business relationship with Quaritch in London and was the author of La Bibliothèque de l'amateur (1909 & 1924), a guide to book collecting, along with many catalogues, etc. Some items from his library were sold shortly after his death, but the majority were sold between 1930 and 1938. See Arthur Rau, "Edouard Rahir...," pp. 169-177 in the Summer 1967 (vol.16 no.2) issue of the Book Collector. This volume contained many of his examples of bookbinding. Many plates including a number in full color. From the reference library of the Zaehnsdorf Company with a commemorative booklabel loosely inserted. Spine ends damaged.

A massive catalogue of 984 pages, the vast bulk of which (pp.1-802) is devoted to books as noted in the title. Some of this is very interesting, especially the section on the arts and architecture, which includes some rare and expensive books. The second part is of even more interest as it contains sections on maps, globes and spheres, astronomical instruments, and "machines typographiques" (with lithographic illustrations of the Stanhope Press, the Columbian Press, the Presse Française and the Machine à Glacier). This is followed by eight leaves of type specimens and "Les Articles pour la Reliure" which includes four folding plates of shiny glazed black paper printed in gold showing 'Fers a Doreur.' The two final plates are more fers a doreur and include two fully blocked spines, a fully blocked cover and other stamps, rolls and lines. These are in perfect condition and have great appeal as well as obvious documentary value for historians of 1840s binding. The letterpress lists also include skins for binding with prices. The final leaf of this section is Daguerreotypes, both full apparatus and plates. Contemporary bookplates of the Franklin Library of Boston and the later 19th century bookplate of the Lawrence Public Library. Rubbed, hinges rubbed but sound.

Sales catalogue. Preface in French, English and Spanish. This a catalogue of all the great works in many languages that Hector Bossange claims to be able to procure in a modern edition in a variety of bindings. In his preface, he says that this catalogue is intended as a tool specifically for foreign book collectors and their agents to ease the ordering process of important books. Many of the books he lists do not have prices because, "being out of print, are only to be obtained with some difficulty or at second hand, and of which the prices vary according to their rareness and their condition." The back section contains only books pertaining directly to stationary and the arts and sciences. Bossange was also a procurer of objects other than books for foreign collectors. Ex-library copy with, title page repaired, and with perforated stamp, cover corners show wear. No plates.
