German-born artist Hellmuth Weissenborn (1898-1982) spent the first half of his life in his native Leipzig and the second in London. He was forced to flee his homeland in early 1939 in the face of Nazi terror and found refuge in Britain. Unlike many of his fellow refugees, he never lost his sense of German heritage. In this biography, the cultural baggage that he brought with him is explored: life in Weimar Germany, especially in the book arts, is the cultural context of his early life.

After his conscription into service in World War I he returned home with diaries and sketchbooks and enrolled at the world-famous Leipzig Academy of Graphic and Book Arts, studying art, typography, and printmaking. Artistic success came early, and soon he moved up into the staff, becoming one of the Academy's youngest professors. When the Nazis took power, he lost his post for marrying a Jewish woman and was forced to leave Germany.

In Britain, the 40-year-old Weissenborn struggled to find work, and was interned for six months on the Isle of Man in 1940. This resulted in an intensively productive artistic output but also led to the end of his first marriage. On release he embarked on a new phase in his career as printmaker, teacher, and publisher. His second marriage proved to be a creative partnership: he and his wife ran the Acorn Press together.

New unpublished material in the form of Weissenborn's World War I diary, letters from his first wife, and interviews with his former students and colleagues help to give an impression of the man and his life in this first full biography of the artist. Family photographs that survived his exile underpin the narrative of his life, while his versatile artistic output is reflected in the many illustrations.

Anna Nyburg is a lecturer in German at Imperial College London. She completed an MA in 1974 at the University of East Anglia in European Literature, and in 2009 she was awarded a PhD in Exile Studies at the University of London, the subject of which was the German-speaking refugees from Nazism to Britain who either created art publishing companies, or who made contributions as book artists, typographers, or designers.

When Gordon Ray delivered the Lyell Lectures at Oxford in 1985, he chose as his subject the Art Deco book illustrations and bindings produced in France in the 1920s. This topic was not a surprising choice, for he had previously written magisterial annotated catalogues, largely based on his own collection, of British illustrated books from 1790 to 1914 and of French illustrated books from 1700 to 1914. His Lyell Lectures formed a natural continuation of the latter and gave him the opportunity to express his views on still another area in which, through his collecting and research, he had become expert. He accompanied his lectures with 183 slides, the majority of them in color, and those illustrations are in fact the reason that the lectures have not been published until now: the expense of producing so many illustrations was too daunting for the publishers that Ray approached.
Today a happy solution to this problem is available in the form of digital presentation on the internet, and Ray's work is now being offered in a combination of printed and electronic forms. The verbal text of his lectures is letterpress printed in this present volume (supplemented by eight plates, showing striking examples of the work of the major figures discussed), and all of the available illustrations are being published on the website of the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia.

This book examines works from the Frederick S. Selch Collection pertaining to the history of musical instruments. Selch was well-known for collecting books about history, design, and the use of musical instruments. His books on this field of study will continue to be a resource for research as they present the developing history of the field of organology. The books also reveal plenty about the history of printing and book illustration, and with 100 items showcased, this exhibition represents the diversity and quality of Selch's collection.

Produced after the exhibition held at the Grolier Club from January 26 to March 11, 2005, the book contains much of the commentary included in the labels displayed at the exhibition. Laurence Libdin, Curator of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and H. Reynolds Butler provide additional commentary. Entries are arranged chronologically under author, compiler, or publisher. First edition. This wonderful exhibition catalogue highlights a myriad of works illustrated and written by this celebrated children's book writer and artist. This exhibition covers the first time Sendak's original works were shown in Asia, beginning in October 1996 at Maruzen Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan, travelling in December to Kyoto and Nagoya and then to Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok, Thailand in January of 1997. Illustrating more than eighty books, Sendak's original drawings are in constant demand by private collectors everywhere. Nearly all of his artwork is archived at the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia. Past loan exhibits have been presented at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, while commercial galleries have offered modest shows with work on loan from the artist. Significant drawings are rarely ever offered for sale, especially his highly finished pencil studies which precisely detail both concept and development of his designs or alternate visions closely resembling his published pictures but are just a bit different. This catalogue contains Sendak's pictures, original prints and posters designs presented for the first time in Asia. Many of these drawings have never been offered for public sale anywhere and are of high quality and importance, covering more than thirty-five years of creativity. These works include actual preliminary studies for many of the artist's most important books including WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, IN THE NIGHT KITCHEN, OUTSIDE OVER THERE, his early and little-known version of THE VELVETEEN RABBIT, illustrations from German fairy tales by Brentano and the Brothers Grimm, pictures for theatrical costumes, poster designs, and record jackets, plus his homage to the battle against censorship on behalf of the American Booksellers Association. While preparing an exhibition to accompany the 1997 Dartmouth Book Arts Summer Workshop, "Joseph Blumenthal and the Spiral Press," Mr. Cronenwett discovered that there was no standard bibliography of The Spiral Press. Since that time, Mr. Cronenwett has exhaustively researched and examined the holdings of many collections to compile this checklist of more than 600 items. The bibliography lists the press's monographs, pamphlets, exhibition catalogs and all publications relating to printing arts. This APHA publication will be an important research tool to literary and printing history scholars and collectors.

The significance of The Spiral Press to American letters and cultural history is underscored by the items listed in the bibliography. Joseph Blumenthal designed and printed for Robert Frost, W. H. Auden, Pablo Neruda, William Carlos Williams, Robinson Jeffers and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Institutions counted among the press's clients were The Metropolitan Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Morgan Library, The Grolier Club and The American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The press is also extremely significant to printing history in America. As a printer, Joseph Blumenthal set standards that are unequalled for dedication to the details of fine printing and design. His proprietary typeface, Spiral, was admired by the Monotype Corporation and adapted as "Emerson" for commercial book composition. In his later years, Blumenthal prepared a series of exhibitions on fine printing in America and Europe. He wrote and taught, sharing his passion for the book. To him the book was "a prime cultural heritage. Poetry, knowledge and the aspirations of mankind have been spread by the book to the whole of society."

The book has 196 pages containing more than two dozen reproductions of Spiral Press pages. These are offset-printed, in additional colors where appropriate, at the Studley Press. The book is casebound in a fine imported cloth over boards and issued in an edition of 500 copies.

First edition. When people think of Bewick, they are generally thinking of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) and his superlative wood engravings of animals and birds. Thomas skill and reputation largely obscured the artistic recognition of his younger brother, John Bewick, as an accomplished wood engraver illustrating mostly children's books.
Yet John Bewick was one of the earliest, if not the earliest, designer-engravers in England to make his living exclusively by illustrating books. His popularity resulted in producing illustrations and engravings for 60 books - mostly children's books - during a tragically short working life.
This is the first book entirely devoted to this remarkable wood engraver. It consists of two parts. The first is a biography of the artist, drawing upon largely unpublished but highly detailed and entertaining correspondence, which has surfaced in the last few years. The second part provides a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of John Bewick's illustrations.
