Printed in an edition of 2000 copies. Volume I of a series of three installments, not yet completed. Praised as "a masterpiece of book production" and "a product of enthusiasts" by critic Wilfried F. Schoeller, the book traces the early 20th-century history of the Insel publishing house. Insel earned its renown by turning book production into an art form as it printed the works of classic authors and gave a new generation of writers, such as Rainer Maria Rilke, their start. The editor, Brinks, reveals Insel's high aesthetic standards through sumptuous illustrations of its work. In all, there are 240 illustrations, seven of which are foldouts, many polychrome with three and four colors, and many with stunning gold print. One splendid example of the high-quality illustrations is the foldout of a series of classics, The Thousand and One Nights and the Decameron, the bindings designed by Marcus Behmer. The colors are so rich and the detail so striking that the reader almost feels he can touch and leaf through the deckled pages of the books shown. Another example depicted is that of Henry van de Velde's designs for the covers of Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra, as well as sample pages from the edition, both finely detailed with gold print. Text edited by Brinks with seventeen essays contributed by him and twelve other specialists such as Juergen Suess, Marcus Haucke, and Suzanne Buchinger. Essays beautifully printed with wide margins and double-spaced on Gardapat paper in cursive Borgis White Antiqua. Outstanding documentation for the essays at the back of the book, as well as detailed indices for artwork and literary sources. Accompanying the book is a slim briefcase volume containing twelve facsimile resolution papers and eight folder reproductions in their original format. To honor a gift given to the Watkinson Library by M. William McGill, this catalogue is an illustrated checklist of the works of British architectural and topographical artist John Piper. In the late 1920s, Piper attended both the Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and by the 1930s he was working steadily as an artist hardly earning a living. While his mother wrote articles for The Architectural Review to publicize his work, Piper developed a friendship with poet John Betjeman. This friendship significantly helped both of their professional careers. Piper's reputation continued to develop, and he eventually moved away from abstract art to a more representational style. Through his work, Piper learned how colors and textures reacted with one another, a concept continually displayed throughout his art.

This catalogue contains works by Piper, works about Piper, exhibitions and catalogues, miscellaneous Piper-ana, and works illustrated by Piper. It also includes an opening essay on Piper by William McGill. With both black-and-white and color images and a letterpress-printed cover, John Piper in the Watkinson is beautifully produced in a striking and appealing format.

Jessie M. King (1875-1949) was the foremost Scottish book designer and illustrator of the 20th century. Her work reflected the mixture of Symbolism and Arts & Crafts practiced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the others of "The Four" in Glasgow where she was trained. During the 50 years of her career she designed and illustrated some 250 books, over 100 greeting cards, bookplates and assorted items of ephemera.

A Guide to the Printed Work of Jessie M. King attempts to bring order to this enormous output. Every known item has been annotated, classified and catalogued, and a further section lists over 100 publications containing reproductions of other works by the artist. An appendix by Dr. A.D. Portno discusses her work for the German publishers, Globus. A second appendix investigates her designs for Routledge's series of children's classics.

In order to do justice to Jessie M. King's talent, besides the selection of items illustrated in the book, a substantial part of her work is illustrated in color on an accompanying CD-Rom. On the CD, every significant item is present, with each illustration numbered according to the corresponding entry in the text.

Colin White is an art historian specializing in the early 20th century. His published works include biographies of Edmund Dulac and Jessie M. King and a history of objects of artistic interest found in nurseries. He is at work on a biography of Kay Nielsen. He has written books on Sentimentality in Art, Decorative Headpieces and Tailpieces, and one on the influence of the Japanese No on the plays of W.B. Yeats. He has published articles on the bookplates of Jessie M. King and of Edward Ardizzone, as well as a survey for the Wolfson Foundation of the art of Thomas Mackenzie.

First edition. Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is perhaps the most renowned Swedish artist, in his own country and beyond. He rose from an impoverished childhood and youth to find the perfect expression for his artistic talent in watercolors, winning medals in France at the Salons. His works in this medium became widely known through eight "albums" of his home and family, which he not only illustrated but also narrated and which were successfully marketed in Germany as well as in Sweden. These books were published in several editions during his lifetime and reissued, some in revised format, starting in the latter twentieth century. Along with being an exquisite watercolorist, Larsson also was a talented illustrator, a superb portrait painter, a fine graphic artist and an imaginative muralist, who was influenced by pre-Raphaelitism, Art Nouveau, arts of the Gustavian period and Japonisme. Possibly the most providential factor in his life was his marriage to Karin Bergöö. Together, in the small cottage in Sundborn given to them by her father, they created a home with unique and personal interiors, which influenced generations of interior designers through the twentieth and into the twenty-first century. This is the first comprehensive bibliography on Larsson and, with approximately 5900 entries, encompasses all known works by him, including albums, book illustrations and any articles he wrote and/or illustrated in all languages and countries. The bibliography also documents and annotates the plethora of materials about him in all languages, including monographs, incidental books, encyclopedia articles and exhibition catalogs, as well as the numerous journal and newspaper articles written about him during his lifetime and up to the present. The book includes a section of 16 color plates highlighting Larsson's work. Ann J. A fascinating census of the limericks in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense,which was first published in 1846 as two separate volumes with seventy-three limericks. A "new" (i.e. second) edition came out in 1855, and a third edition with forty-three additional verses was published in 1861. This third edition provides the first full text and also identifies Lear as the author for the first time. It is often considered the first "trade" version, as it was published by Routledge, Warne & Routledge and consequently received broader distribution and readership. Justin Schiller has cross-referenced the 116 limericks in the third edition with eight manuscripts for this book (which are now preserved in various rare book collections) and compared them to the printed texts of the 1846, 1855 and 1861 editions. Nyburg, Anna FROM LEIPZIG TO LONDON: THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE ÉMIGRÉ ARTIST HELLMUTH WEISSENBORN.

German-born artist Hellmuth Weissenborn (1898-1982) spent the first half of his life in his native Leipzig and the second in London. He was forced to flee his homeland in early 1939 in the face of Nazi terror and found refuge in Britain. Unlike many of his fellow refugees, he never lost his sense of German heritage. In this biography, the cultural baggage that he brought with him is explored: life in Weimar Germany, especially in the book arts, is the cultural context of his early life.

After his conscription into service in World War I he returned home with diaries and sketchbooks and enrolled at the world-famous Leipzig Academy of Graphic and Book Arts, studying art, typography, and printmaking. Artistic success came early, and soon he moved up into the staff, becoming one of the Academy's youngest professors. When the Nazis took power, he lost his post for marrying a Jewish woman and was forced to leave Germany.

In Britain, the 40-year-old Weissenborn struggled to find work, and was interned for six months on the Isle of Man in 1940. This resulted in an intensively productive artistic output but also led to the end of his first marriage. On release he embarked on a new phase in his career as printmaker, teacher, and publisher. His second marriage proved to be a creative partnership: he and his wife ran the Acorn Press together.

New unpublished material in the form of Weissenborn's World War I diary, letters from his first wife, and interviews with his former students and colleagues help to give an impression of the man and his life in this first full biography of the artist. Family photographs that survived his exile underpin the narrative of his life, while his versatile artistic output is reflected in the many illustrations.

Anna Nyburg is a lecturer in German at Imperial College London. She completed an MA in 1974 at the University of East Anglia in European Literature, and in 2009 she was awarded a PhD in Exile Studies at the University of London, the subject of which was the German-speaking refugees from Nazism to Britain who either created art publishing companies, or who made contributions as book artists, typographers, or designers.

When Gordon Ray delivered the Lyell Lectures at Oxford in 1985, he chose as his subject the Art Deco book illustrations and bindings produced in France in the 1920s. This topic was not a surprising choice, for he had previously written magisterial annotated catalogues, largely based on his own collection, of British illustrated books from 1790 to 1914 and of French illustrated books from 1700 to 1914. His Lyell Lectures formed a natural continuation of the latter and gave him the opportunity to express his views on still another area in which, through his collecting and research, he had become expert. He accompanied his lectures with 183 slides, the majority of them in color, and those illustrations are in fact the reason that the lectures have not been published until now: the expense of producing so many illustrations was too daunting for the publishers that Ray approached.
Today a happy solution to this problem is available in the form of digital presentation on the internet, and Ray's work is now being offered in a combination of printed and electronic forms. The verbal text of his lectures is letterpress printed in this present volume (supplemented by eight plates, showing striking examples of the work of the major figures discussed), and all of the available illustrations are being published on the website of the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia.

Ethel Reed (1874-1912) is one of the most elusive figures in the history of American graphic design. Born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, she moved in the 1890s to Boston, where, while still in her early twenties, she achieved international recognition for her posters - and for her personal glamour. "The beautiful poster lady" is how newspapers of the day described her, and they often went on to claim that she was the most famous woman artist in America. Ethel Reed was an extraordinarily vivid personality of the fin de siècle and a striking early example of a media celebrity.

But in 1896, following a broken engagement, she sailed to Europe, contributed to the two final issues of the Yellow Book in London, and then, after the turn of the century, vanished in the fog (to use her own phrase). Now William S. Peterson, through meticulous archival research, has at last been able to reconstruct the story of her life in England. Though unsuccessful in renewing her artistic career, she found lovers there, bore two children, and eventually married Arthur Warwick, an English army officer. Yet the marriage fell apart immediately, and her final years were darkened by poverty, drug addiction, and alcoholism.

This is the only book-length treatment of her work as a designer - and the first successful attempt to recover Ethel Reed's enigmatic, hidden life. It includes 16 color plates of her posters and 47 black-and-white illustrations.

William S. Peterson (Professor Emeritus of English, University of Maryland), a bibliographer and book historian, has edited three scholarly journals and has written or edited sixteen books, the most recent of which is (in collaboration with Sylvia Holton Peterson) The Kelmscott Chaucer: A Census (Oak Knoll Press, 2011). One of his books was nominated for a National Book Award, and another was the winner of the 1993 Felice Feliciano Award. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow and a Visiting Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford.
