The subject of this volume is Girolamo Savonarola, the radical reforming Dominican who caused the expulsion of Pietro de' Medici, instituted of the Bonfires of the Vanities in Florence's public squares, and was eventually hanged and burned publicly. The text of this volume is divided into two sections. The first covers the illustrated editions of the writings of Girolamo Savonarola published in Italy during the fifteenth- and sixteenth-centuries. Some subjects, like the Crucifixion, are familiar, while others seem more particular to the works of Savonarola. The second section covers Savonarola's writings on art, culled from his larger oeuvre and collated together for interpretive discussion in this essay. The tables at the end of the volume provide lists of editions of Savonarola's works illustrated and printed in Italy, grouped by city of publication. Foreign works (cited in the book) with engravings as illustrations, are listed by city of publication. With black-and-white plates. A detailed table of contents also appears. First edition signed by the author at the end of the introduction. Dedicated to Monsieur Wille, graveur du roi de France, de L'Académie Royale de peinture et de plusiers autres académies. This copy of the book carries the signature and annotations of Franz Rechberger (1771-1841), a painter and engraver who was the personal curator of the Austrian collector, patron, and bibliophile le Comte Moritz von Fries (1777-1826). (For further information on Rechberger see Bénézit, 8 p.639, and Nagler, Die Monogrammisten II p.863.) The Comte de Fries was a patron of Ludwig van Beethoven and friend of Franz Schubert. He had amassed a collection of over 16,000 books (mostly large, illustrated works of the 18th century), 300 paintings and 100,000 drawings and prints representing all schools, before it had to be sold as a result of his bankruptcy in 1826. The collection is now dispersed throughout various public and private European collections. This book is annotated by Rechberger with notations of which prints were owned by Fries. Includes a complete catalogue of the prints and bookplates made by Schmidt. The book opens with a fine etching of Schmidt by "Wagner à Leipsic." Head and tail of spine with small chips, some rubbing to hinges. Bookplate on front pastedowns of Theodor Noderer and one indicating that this book came from the reference library and stock of H. P. Kraus. A commemorative booklabel which indicates that this set came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale is loosely inserted. Covers cracked along front hinge.

First edition. Frank E. Schoonover (1877-1972) is recognized as one of the foremost illustrators of his time. His prolific contribution to American illustration spanned more than 40 years and included more than 2200 illustrations. His work appeared in most of the popular periodicals in the first half of the twentieth century, including Harpers, Scribner's, Saturday Evening Post, American Boy, Country Gentleman, and Colliers, as well as in over 150 books, particularly children's classics and contemporary fiction by such authors as Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Clarence Mulford, Lucy Foster Madison, James Willard Schultz, and Zane Grey. His iconic images of Hopalong Cassidy, Blackbeard, Jean LaFitte, Jim Bridger, Robinson Crusoe, Hans Brinker, Gulliver, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Joan of Arc remain a testimony of his creative, artistic ability.

Born in Oxford, New Jersey, in 1877, Schoonover eventually attended Drexel Institute in Philadelphia where he was taught by the quintessential American illustrator, Howard Pyle. Also, the young artist was chosen to attend Pyle's summer school in Chadds Ford. With Pyle's help, Schoonover initiated his illustrative career in 1899 with four en grisaille oil paintings for the book Jersey Boy in the Revolution. He numbered them #1-4 as he began recording his works in the remarkable day books, a chronological, detailed account that he maintained for his entire career. After settling in 1900 in Wilmington, Delaware, the artist traveled widely in the United States and Canada, giving him a unique perspective and a rich reservoir of experiences, which he incorporated into many works. He subsequently became recognized as an expert on the indigenous tribes of the Hudson Bay area. When the popularity of illustration waned in the 1940s, Schoonover turned to landscapes and commissions including designs for magnificent stained glass windows. He was also a sought-after, accomplished art teacher for twenty-five years.

The two-volume, slip-cased Frank E. Schoonover Catalogue Raisonné embodies Schoonover's entire oeuvre, from his earliest sketches to his last easel paintings. The book is chronologically organized with the numeration based on his daybook entries. Included are over 3000 images, many in full color, a detailed biography with accompanying time line, information about his models and students, lists of exhibitions and the magazines he illustrated, two additional bibliographies, and three indices. Author was a noted historian and adviser to President Kennedy. Printed on the 25th anniversary of the President's assasination. Hand printed by Luke Ives Pontifell at his Thornwillow Press on Johannot paper from France and with handbinding by Karl Foulkes. With one engraving by Michael McCurdy on the title page. The author has signed this copy at the bottom of the first page of text and the printer has signed the colophon. Lithographies originales en couleurs de Jacques Villon. Paris Scripta & Picta 1953 folio text pages loosely inserted in publisher's paper folder, chemise, and slipcase. xxx, 126, (10) pages.
First Villon edition, one of 245 copies (total edition). However, this is one of the few copies reserved for the collaborators with their names printed on the colophon page. This copy was Valéry's own with his name printed on the colophon page. This beautifully illustrated book contains 45 (44 in color) original lithographs by Jacques Villon, hors- and in-texte, printed on Arches wove paper by F. Mourlot. Villon himself engraved each color on a separate stone, producing 320 different stone plates. An important book (See Strachan's The Artist and the Book in France for various mentions). The outer slipcase is faded and worn along edges. The book is in very fine condition. Bookplate of Margaret Winkelman on inside cover of chemise.
