Bequest of the Unity of Brethren originally published in 1650, Comenius (1592-1670) was a bishop of the Bohemian Unity of Brethren (the Moravian Church), an Anabaptist sect. Comenius is also noted for his advocacy of universal education. He was forced into exile during the Thirty Years War, dying in Amsterdam in 1670. Tissues inserted opposite illustrations.

Landseer haslittle concern for the technique of engraving, and instead highlights the discussions about the claim of engraving to be a fine art, rules for the profession of engraver, and if indeed it was a profession.(Bridson & Wakeman B135). The endpapers and blanks are modern with an earlier bookplate from the New Haven Free Library preserved on the front pastedown. The only other indication that this was a library book is a faint stamp on the title page and two numbers written on the verso of the title page. A sheet of paper with notes in Bridson's hand laid-in. With the bookplate and pencil signature of Gavin Bridson.

Text in French. A bibliography of engravers and engravings. Includes an alphabetical listing of engravers with a description of the works they produced with some illustrations of their trademarks. Other information given includes place and time the printer was in business. Author was a longtime employee of the Department of Printing at the Imperial Library in Paris. A laid-in letter from a Mr. James Hillhouse of New Haven, Connecticut to Mr Dougall Hawkes of New York describes research done on this copy and gives some information about its provenance. Ex-library with bookplate and markings. Spines of first three volumes loose. Front hinges of first two volumes cracked. Scuffing and rubbing at edges of all volumes.

A large run of this deluxe periodical for bibliophiles was first published by A. Quantin in 1880 and later by Quantin with Octave Uzanne from 1881 to 1889. (Ulrich & Kup p.124.) A spectacular journal letterpress printed with many original prints bound-in. Artists include Jules Adeline, author of Les Arts de Reproduction Vulgarises (1894), as well as others. Some plates are reproduced in color. Filled with illustrations of books, book illustrations, bindings, portraits, and other subjects. Many articles are devoted to the history of printing as well as to contemporary book production. Present are volumes one through three (1881-1883), and volumes five and six (1885-1886). Part one of the first volume is bound in later cloth, part two is unbound and all other volumes are bound in period half cloth with leather spine labels and marbled boards.

The 68 plates are printed on fine paper and are described in a table of contents page placed at the beginning. Mackley was a highly regarded wood-engraver of the 1930's through the 1960's and was particularly known for his works on boats, architecture, and plants. In addition to illustrating books, he also wrote on wood-engraving.

This text provides an artistically produced film of life. Masereel is very fond of the cinema and has even written a scenario himself. He calls his book "Romans en images," - novels in pictures. 165 black-and-white woodcuts tell the story without words. Minor chipping at head of spine. Former owner's signature on free front endpaper. Well preserved copy.
