First edition. Writing over fifty years ago, the bibliographer Percy Muir noted that the 'immediate post-Bewick period' had been 'unduly neglected,' and this is still true today. In this major new study, John Buchanan-Brown remedies this neglect and demonstrates the importance of the period from 1820 to 1860 in the history of the illustrated book. These years saw the establishment of the technique of end-grain wood-engraving as the dominant medium of graphic reproduction. Its great advantage was that, as a relief process, it could reproduce both the image and the text simultaneously, and this allowed the publishing industry to feed what had become an insatiable appetite for illustrated books and journals.
Although end-grain engraving was an English phenomenon, it was the French who first applied the process to book design. In turn, German illustrators were to influence the style of British illustrators. Thus, wood-engraving naturally plays a leading role in this study, but it does not overshadow the other means of graphic reproduction employed during this period: lithography, chromolithography, and steel-engraving and etching.
The study illustrates the work of French and German artists and their influence upon their British counterparts. The pioneering study also includes appendices on aspects of wood- and steel-engraving in England, notes on French and German illustrators, and a glossary of technical terms. It is illustrated by some 250 reproductions in black-and-white, and eight pages in color.

Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was one of the most prolific American printers of ephemera during the late nineteenth century. A native of Germany, he immigrated to New York City around 1850, where he enjoyed a long, creative career printing ephemera such as songsheets, illustrated stationery, birds eye views, maps, board games, puzzles, greeting cards, and rewards of merit. He also published several books and supplied illustrations for others. Given the range of his printing and publishing efforts, it is likely that many households of the time would have had something with his name on it.

This book first examines Magnus as a person, then details the various kinds of items he published, giving a full chapter to his many Civil War era products. It considers his early life in Germany, his family, and his business activities in America. It focuses on him as a businessman who was concerned about making a living to support his family and employees, addresses how he advertised, and discusses how he never relinquished his ties to Europe and his native Germany.

Due to the ephemeral nature of Magnus's imprints, the lifespan of most of his work was short, making them rare survivors in today's collecting institutions. Yet, as examples of the pervasive vernacular visual culture of the nineteenth century, they are important to both scholars and collectors. Documenting nearly a half century of the American experience, they inform us about the games children played, ballads that adults read and sang, the sites of Civil War battles, advertising strategies, and sentiments expressed through valentines.

Throughout the book are over 100 color illustrations of Magnus's work and portraits of him and his family. An appendix lists the items mentioned by title in the book and records where at least one copy of each can be located. A comprehensive index completes the volume.

Published in two parts in 1799 and 1800, The City of Philadelphia ...As it Appeared in the Year 1800 by William Birch was the first American color plate book to be published. During the mid 1890s, there was widespread use of the trichromatic half-tone process. This was quickly replaced with new mediums that dominated the twentieth century, providing the basis for this publication. Because production moved from hand-colored plate engravings and lithographs to the development of chromolithography, the nineteenth century shows the birth, rise, and eventual demise of methods of production in the culture of American printed books.

Color in books represented luxury during the nineteenth century. Color was never cheap, and although technology made color plates available to a wider audience, the big color plate books were still only available to the rich because of their high cost. As the demand for color became stronger, publishers were more eager to supply it. To do this, it often meant hand finishing was replaced by mechanical work, and quality was therefore reduced.

This exhibition takes a closer look at the world of lost processes and skills. This book traces the progression of production processes and the careers of some of the leading specialists. Aiming to show the diversity of color plate work among the leading titles, the exhibition displays highlights of the century and provides insight into the tastes and interests of those producing in the nineteenth century. The book is the first since the process was in its heyday to offer a detailed account of how chromolithographs were made, tracing the evolution of this hand-drawn color-printing process from its tentative beginnings in Germany in the early nineteenth century to its spread from Europe to the United States and beyond. Drawing on a variety of sources - manuals, journals, correspondence, preparatory drawings, proofs, interviews with people in the trade, as well as the products themselves - the author provides fascinating insights into the methods and skills of the chromolithographer.

This is also the first book to consider chromolithography from a global standpoint. It gives particular attention to the movement of artists, printers, equipment, materials, products, and ideas across national boundaries, and contextualizes all this with respect to the development of the lithographic trade and its organization.

Wolfe, Richard J. JACOB BIGELOW'S AMERICAN MEDICAL BOTANY, 1817-1821.

Jacob Bigelow's American Medical Botany, published in three volumes between 1817 and 1821 and containing sixty colored plates, occupies a unique place in American book printing and book illustration. Of all the books published in the United States before the mid-nineteenth century introduction of chromolithography, it was the only one to have its plates mechanically printed in color, not colored by hand in the usual manner of the day.

Richard J. Wolfe's classic study of this seminal work, issued initially in 1979 and now reissued in a revised and augmented edition, has made use of Dr. Bigelow's previously unavailable manuscript papers and other previously unknown or little known records to come up with some startling conclusions. His investigations show that Dr. Bigelow's original plan was to have his plates colored by hand by artists. But this plan proved overly ambitious and the project faced failure. So, he and those working with him invented a method of printing the book's plates on stone in a simple manner that prefigured and predated chromolithography by about two decades, thus enabling him to bring his projected work to a successful conclusion. Wolfe's investigation of the origin, printing, binding, and distribution through subscription of this signal work also constitutes an important case study of the production, from conception to completion, of a significant book of that early period.

The 1979 edition of Wolfe's work went out of print quickly. As in that edition, this second edition contains, tipped in, two of Bigelow's original plates, one left uncolored and one colored by hand. These plates were rendered obsolete when the doctor and his cohorts discovered a novel way of printing them in color.
