(Faithfull, Emily) TE DEUM LAUDAMUS.
N.P. Victoria Press n.d. (1868) 8vo. original blue cloth stamped in gilt, all edges gilt, later blue cloth clamshell box. Title page printed in red, dedication page with dedication to the Queen, 29 leaves printed recto only in chromolithography heightened in gold and silver by M. & N. Hanhart.
First edition. (See William Fredeman's article on this press in the Library, June 1974, pp.139-164). Printed, published and illuminated by Emily Faithfull, the proprietor of the Victoria Press. Fredeman calls this one of the "most splendid works published by Emily Faithfull". "As physical objects (this book and one other produced by Faithfull), they are superior to any book issued with the imprint of the press, and they compare favourably with similar books by Owen Jones and Noel Humphreys..." Emily Faithfull established this press in 1860 as an outlet for her theories on the employment of women and the press employed mostly women in most facets of the business. The press was transferred to the Queen Printing and Publishing Company in 1881.
Presentation on verso of free endpaper "R. Townsend Mayer, With Emily Faithful's best regards, Feb. 24, 1869." With the bookplate of Samuel Ralph Townsend and Gertrude Mary Mayer on front pastedown. Wear at bottom of spine and one corner. Inside hinges craced with pages loose as often happened with this book as the pages were not sewn in by the original binder.
