See More... Marchant, Guy THE KALENDAR & COMPOST OF SHEPHERDS.
London Peter Davies 1931 large 8vo. cloth, dust jacket ix, 176 pages
First edition by this publisher. Foreword by G.C. Heseltine. Translation of Guy Marchant's Kalendrier des Bergiersoriginally published in 1491. The present edition is based on an English translation from circa 1518. Includes reproductions of Marchant's original woodcuts. One of the first books aimed at the common reader instead of scholars or the wealthy upper class. The Kalendar is pointedly addressed to the Shepherd--an archetype who could stand in for Jesus and other Biblical figures to kings and the common man. The almanac outlines a path of living in twelve stages consisting of twelve years each. Each stage corresponds to a calender month; thus, infancy and childhood is associated with January, vigor and strength with May, and old age with December. Introductory chapters are followed by a two-page spread devoted to each month. Entries include a list of celebration, feast and saint's days, a description of the cycle of the moon, a short explanatory poem and a woodcut illustration. Detailed descriptions of the types and consequences of vices with some theological discussion follows. The reader is then addressed by Death, who warns of sin and the brevity of time. Subsequent chapters devoted to lengthy discussion of the tempers and humours. Ventures recommendations as to the treatment of a variety of ailments. Also discusses the properties of the sun, moon and planets. This gripping read offers invaluable insight into fifteenth century beliefs. Library marking on spine of jacket and small ink stamp on front pastedown.

2 volumes (Paris) n.p. n.d. (but circa 1876) 8vo. later cloth with embossed seal (entwined Ls in an oval, surmounted by a crown) 9 pages + one fold out leaf of plates in black and white; 20 pages
A pair of offprint articles, one responding to the other, from La Revue Universelle des Arts and the Bulletin des Commissions royales d'art et d'archéologie, bound separately. The Pinchart article seems to dismantle the criticism voiced by de Brou in his initial article challenging the authorship status of the Flemish Master ES of 1466 in as far as regards the large coats-of-arms of the duc de Bourgogne, preferring instead to side with earlier scholars Harzen and Alvin. The second article, in typical scholarly fashion, attacks its predecessor articles on the grounds of their conclusions and the linguistic formulations thereof, in order to underscore the greater clarity and convincingness of its arguments. As a pair, interesting for the individual desirous of learning about early copper engraving in the Low Countries, as well as about the dynamics of nineteenth-century French scholarly debate in print. Traces of original blue stiff paper wrapper visible along spine of the volume.

Kraków Panstwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe 1970 4to. cloth, dust jacket, slipcase 275, (3) pages
Printed in an edition of 1,000 copies. Translated from German into Polish by Tadeusz Zapiór. Expanded from the original Stanislaus Polonus ein polnischer Frühdrucker in Spanien., produced by Anatoly Girs and published in 1946 by Oficyna Warszawska. Beautifully produced and printed in red and black with wide margins on heavy paper, the book reproduces text, woodcuts, initials, headpieces, tailpieces, fleurons and other ornaments from Polonus's work. Several of the lush woodcuts from Gaspar Gorrico's Contemplaciones sobre el Rosario appear throughout, and some, such as "The Coronation" and "The Adoration of the Magi," are accorded full-page treatment, where they display the artist's attention to detail. Polonus collaborated on this series with his long-time partner, Meinardo Ungut, and Ruppel included numerous samples from their other joint projects, such as a page of text and music from Processionarium Ordinis Praedicatorum and the title-page woodcut plus a page of text from Floreto de San Francisco. Working on his own later in Alcalá, Polonus printed among other items a 4-volume edition of Vita Christi Cartuxano, and its title page woodcut with royal arms is reproduced, portraying him presenting the work to Ferdinand and Isabella (Clair, p. 218). On the verso in red and black is the colophon as it appeared with Polonus's pressmark. Frontispiece tipped-in. 1946 colophon included. Slipcase rubbed.
