Thomas Bewick can be called one of the best English exponents of wood engraving. Born in 1753, he grew up on a small farm, where his chores came second to his interest in the countryside, fishing, and watching birds and animals. These early passions set the stage for his future endeavors.

His early work of cutting soft wood for woodcuts eventually turned into fine detailed designs into hard wood. Beginning in the late 1700s onwards, Thomas illustrated many children's books with one of his most famous books, The History of British Birds. The book contained bird engravings and wood cuts and was an immediate success. Other major publications that helped solidify Bewick's success include The Chillingham Bull, Waiting for Death, A General History of Quadrupeds, and The Fables of Aesop and Others.

Bewick's celebrated histories of quadrupeds and birds of 1790, 1797, and 1804 have obscured the immense number of other books of all denominations illustrated in his modest workshop. From its inception in 1765 until its demise in 1849, the workshop provided illustrations to books, pamphlets, periodicals, and newspapers. The range of illustrations encompassed natural histories, children's storybooks, cookery books, religious tracts, spelling books, mathematical treatises, Bibles, agricultural manuals, local town and county histories, joke books, and even a book of sermons.

Generously illustrated and arranged alphabetically, this book details some 750 titles, over 450 of which are unrecorded in earlier bibliographies. In addition it provides sections on newspaper mastheads, book cover designs, copy-book covers, maps, and large single prints. Whether appealing to the Bewick aficionado, book historian, art historian, provincial printing enthusiast, or admirer of engraving on wood or copper, this will be an indispensable work.

When was it that someone decided that books might be written and published for child readers? It's fair to say that some kinds of text-alphabets, fables, the Lord's Prayer, may have been seen as fundamental to the process of learning to read from the beginning of book making, but when did children come to be seen as a readership for whom special provision should be made? The child as the audience for books in the English language is the subject of this bibliographical study, which had its origins in an exhibition held at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. From this beginning, Felix de Marez Oyens and Brian Alderson have compiled Be Merry and Wise and shown how certain creative talents, driven by a sense of purpose, or a wish to make some money, attempted to appeal directly to children, and how the publishing industry came to realize that this audience might prove to constitute a profitable market.
In conducting their survey, which is centered upon the books themselves, mostly drawn from the holdings of the Morgan Library, the authors not only plot the chronological development of children's book publishing from almost random beginnings to the diversity of the early Victorian period, they also show how publishers adapted their trade methods to exploit this new market. Sweetness and light did not prevail everywhere, but, even in some of the most forbidding examples presented here, there was a commercial optimism that both merriment and wisdom might be happily combined, within the pages of children's literature. The book illustrations and paintings of Richard Doyle (1824-1883) are populated by sprightly visions of fairy nymphs, elves and knights in search of their fair damsels. As `Dickey Doyle' and later `Dick Kitcat,' he produced a series of impressive boyhood triumphs from the now famous DICK DOYLE'S JOURNAL of 1840 to his first published work, THE EGLINTON TOURNAMENT. Doyle's talent for fantasy with pen and ink attracted Mr. Punch who offered him a place on his staff at age 19. There, alongside John Leech, he produced a seven year output of inimitable grotesques, borders, a new PUNCH cover, parodies of social events and the American Gold Rush, and his one overwhelming popular success, `The Foreign Tour of Brown, Jones and Robinson.'
All seemed set for a lifetime of success at PUNCH until the paper attacked the Pope and the Catholic Church, deeply upsetting Doyle's Catholic upbringing. He resigned in 1850 and turned his back on a comfortable future for the uncertain life of the freelance illustrator and painter. This he pursued with half-hearted dedication for the remaining 33 years of his life. This important reference book has been compiled from much unpublished material, including delightful boyhood letters Doyle wrote to his father and letters to famous friends like Dickens, Thackeray and Rossetti. It contains the first complete list of Doyle's illustrations for books and magazines and a list of his paintings.

First edition. One of 100 numbered copies. Wood engravers toiling away at their trade during the last quarter of the nineteenth century could be forgiven for feeling a touch of despair. Since the early 1800s, they had practiced a viable trade, with graver in hand over an endgrain block, cutting illustrations for a healthy proportion of books, newspapers and periodicals. In the 1880s, they witnessed the advent of photomechanical printing plates and, in direct competition, felt the ominous rising tide of obsolescence. As this new technology became more efficient, less expensive and generally accepted over the next twenty years, commercial wood engravers would begin to pack up their blocks, wrap up their tools and seek other employment. It could well be this very occurrence that lay behind the discovery, 130 years on, of a collection of nineteenth century engraved boxwood blocks and, ultimately, the creation of this portfolio.

The Blocks Revisited & Rediscovered documents the fascinating story of Thomas Bewick's personal blocks and their historic journey to Chicago in 1942. Many of these blocks found new homes quickly in the Midwest and across America, while others became well-travelled, eventually making their way back to England. The whereabouts of these blocks and their movements over the years have raised questions and a desire to document them for their safe keeping. It is hoped this five-year investigation will begin to provide answers, as over 700 of the 1,350 blocks that came to Chicago are documented here in 35 collections.

The Blocks Revisited & Rediscovered measures 6.5 x 10 inches and contains eighty pages which include fourteen original blocks printed on dampened Rives Heavy-weight paper using a Washington Hand Press. The remaining thirty-five Bewick illustrations were printed using a Vandercook Press from metal engravings reproduced from the Memorial Edition. The text, set in a digital version of Bulmer, was also printed from metal engravings. Color photographs of Bewick's portrait and his toolbox are included as tip-ins, along with a photograph of a group of blocks at the Hesterberg Press.

A numbered edition of ninety copies was bound by Campbell-Logan Bindery, Minneapolis, in a dark green cloth with contrasting green end papers. The spine is gold stamped and the front cover features an inset of a vignette printed from one of Bewick's blocks at the press.

A fascinating census of the limericks in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense,which was first published in 1846 as two separate volumes with seventy-three limericks. A "new" (i.e. second) edition came out in 1855, and a third edition with forty-three additional verses was published in 1861. This third edition provides the first full text and also identifies Lear as the author for the first time. It is often considered the first "trade" version, as it was published by Routledge, Warne & Routledge and consequently received broader distribution and readership. Justin Schiller has cross-referenced the 116 limericks in the third edition with eight manuscripts for this book (which are now preserved in various rare book collections) and compared them to the printed texts of the 1846, 1855 and 1861 editions. This volume also contains a census of known copies of the genuine first edition.

The Perpetua types were generated by computer and polymer blocks were used throughout to print the book by letterpress on 300gsm Somerset Printmaking paper, and bound at The Fine Bindery. All the images in this book and those used in its binding are by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, and signed by him on the last page. These Sonnets by Richard Barnfield (1574-1627) were originally published in 1595--one year later than The Affectionate Shepheard--in a volume entitled Cynthia.
