See More... (Lear, Edward) Schiller, Justin G. NONSENSUS: CROSS-REFERENCING EDWARD LEAR'S ORIGINAL 116 LIMERICKS WITH EIGHT HOLOGRAPH MANUSCRIPTS AND COMPARING THEM TO PRINTED TEXTS FROM THE 1846,1855 AND 1861 VERSIONS; TOGETHER WITH A CENSUS OF KNOWN COPIES OF THE GENUINE FIRST EDITION.
With introductory remarks by Vivien Noakes. Stroud Catalpa Press 1988 oblong 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. xii, 119 pages.
A fascinating census of the limericks in Edward Lear's Book of Nonsense, which was first published in 1846 as two separate volumes with seventy-three limericks. A "new" (i.e. second) edition came out in 1855, and a third edition with forty-three additional verses was published in 1861. This third edition provides the first full text and also identifies Lear as the author for the first time. It is often considered the first "trade" version, as it was published by Routledge, Warne & Routledge and consequently received broader distribution and readership. Justin Schiller has cross-referenced the 116 limericks in the third edition with eight manuscripts for this book (which are now preserved in various rare book collections) and compared them to the printed texts of the 1846, 1855 and 1861 editions. This volume also contains a census of known copies of the genuine first edition.

See More... Marchant, Guy THE KALENDAR & COMPOST OF SHEPHERDS.
London Peter Davies 1931 large 8vo. cloth, dust jacket ix, 176 pages
First edition by this publisher. Foreword by G.C. Heseltine. Translation of Guy Marchant's Kalendrier des Bergiersoriginally published in 1491. The present edition is based on an English translation from circa 1518. Includes reproductions of Marchant's original woodcuts. One of the first books aimed at the common reader instead of scholars or the wealthy upper class. The Kalendar is pointedly addressed to the Shepherd--an archetype who could stand in for Jesus and other Biblical figures to kings and the common man. The almanac outlines a path of living in twelve stages consisting of twelve years each. Each stage corresponds to a calender month; thus, infancy and childhood is associated with January, vigor and strength with May, and old age with December. Introductory chapters are followed by a two-page spread devoted to each month. Entries include a list of celebration, feast and saint's days, a description of the cycle of the moon, a short explanatory poem and a woodcut illustration. Detailed descriptions of the types and consequences of vices with some theological discussion follows. The reader is then addressed by Death, who warns of sin and the brevity of time. Subsequent chapters devoted to lengthy discussion of the tempers and humours. Ventures recommendations as to the treatment of a variety of ailments. Also discusses the properties of the sun, moon and planets. This gripping read offers invaluable insight into fifteenth century beliefs. Library marking on spine of jacket and small ink stamp on front pastedown.
