See More... Pinchart, Alexandre and Ch. de Brou LA PLUS ANCIENNE GRAVURE SUR CUIVRE FAITE DANS LES PAYS-BAS and LES GRANDES ARMOIRIES DU DUC CHARLES DE BOURGOGNE
2 volumes (Paris) n.p. n.d. (but circa 1876) 8vo. later cloth with embossed seal (entwined Ls in an oval, surmounted by a crown) 9 pages + one fold out leaf of plates in black and white; 20 pages
A pair of offprint articles, one responding to the other, from La Revue Universelle des Arts and the Bulletin des Commissions royales d'art et d'archéologie, bound separately. The Pinchart article seems to dismantle the criticism voiced by de Brou in his initial article challenging the authorship status of the Flemish Master ES of 1466 in as far as regards the large coats-of-arms of the duc de Bourgogne, preferring instead to side with earlier scholars Harzen and Alvin. The second article, in typical scholarly fashion, attacks its predecessor articles on the grounds of their conclusions and the linguistic formulations thereof, in order to underscore the greater clarity and convincingness of its arguments. As a pair, interesting for the individual desirous of learning about early copper engraving in the Low Countries, as well as about the dynamics of nineteenth-century French scholarly debate in print. Traces of original blue stiff paper wrapper visible along spine of the volume.

New Castle DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 small 4to. cloth, dust jacket 152 pages
First trade edition. From the late nineteenth century, wood engraving became a medium for creative expression. One of the most prolific engravers was Gwen Raverat (1885-1957). She also had a strong sense of character, as is shown by her numerous illustrations to children's books. This book contains the first in-depth assessment of Gwen Raverat as a wood engraver, exploring her technique and her experiments with color prints. In addition it contains a full catalogue of all her engravings, and a descriptive bibliography of the books and ephemera which she illustrated. 1 color and 87 black-and-white illustrations. New Castle Oak Knoll Press 2007 6.5 x 9.5 inches cloth, dust jacket. 292 pages
First Edition. An expanded version of two of the author's previous publications, this bibliography covers a broad range of books on art in early America, including not only art treatises and instruction manuals but all books related to drawing, painting, engraving, sculpture, artist biography and the history of art. The bibliography covers art books up to 1815, the year that Thomas Jefferson sold his extensive book collection to the U.S. government to form a new Library of Congress. One hundred and eighty-three titles are included in the checklist, each with basic bibliographic information, followed by full catalogue references of the booksellers and/or libraries that listed the book. The checklist is followed by five appendices, listing the books by date of first catalogue reference, by the order of number of catalogue references, by library and bookseller in order of earliest reference and in order of collection size, and by the eighteenth-century American artist who read them. The books are also indexed by checklist number. This bibliography will be a useful tool for students and scholars of book collecting, art and American culture in general. Janice G. Schimmelman is a professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Oakland University. She has previously published two articles on this topic: "A Checklist of European Treatises on Art and Essays on Aesthetics Available in America Through 1815" in Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society and "Books on Drawing and Painting Techniques Available in Eighteenth-Century American Libraries and Bookstores" in Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture.

This copy of the book carries the signature and annotations of Franz Rechberger (1771-1841), a painter and engraver who was the personal curator of the Austrian collector, patron, and bibliophile le Comte Moritz von Fries (1777-1826).
