New York The Limited Editions Club 1983 4to. cloth, gilt lettering on spine and cover, slipcase xiii, 138+(1) pages and 3 plates with tissue guards
Printed in an edition limited to 2000 numbered copies. Introduction by Robert Phelps. Translated by Enid McLeod. This work, called "her most original, self-excavating and happy novel" by Phelps, first appeared in 1928. Her most autobiographical work, it was written at a time when the French writer Sidonie-Cabrielle Colette felt that she could enjoy a newly independent life, relying only on her own resources. The lyrical work has been recognized as more of a prose poem than an actual novel. Illustrated by Françoise Gilot. Three color full-page plates with several smaller illustrations printed in teal in text. Perhaps best known for living and working with Picasso for ten years. The illustrations for Colette's novel are typical of her work--immediate, blocky, bold and colorful. Monthly Letter loosely inserted.
