New Castle, Delaware and Nottingham, England Oak Knoll Press and the Plough Press 2002 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover, dust jacket 180 pages
Reprint of the first edition of 1997. For the first time, Jane Greenfield has provided a unique glossary of terms, styles, structures, and names related to conservation and bookbinding through the ages illustrated with over 700 line drawings. Locating accurate descriptions of bookbindings from various periods has previously been frustrating for those who work with rare and antiquarian books, especially conservators, librarians, book collectors and antiquarian book specialists. However, this frustration will abate as Greenfield's work takes place alongside John Carter's ABC For Book Collectors as well as Don Etherington's and Matt T. Roberts' Bookbinding and Conservation of Books. Ms. Greenfield, a master in the field of bookbinding and conservation, examines the book's development from the earliest periods and in different places. She has provided names and drawings for almost every conceivable part of the book as well as a multitude of styles, bindings, and decorations. She literally takes apart the structure of the book and illustrates the many and varied facets and definitions that clearly outline the historical development of the book's structures and styles.

Clouse, Doug MACKELLAR, SMITHS & JORDAN: TYPOGRAPHIC TASTEMAKERS OF THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2008 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover, dust jacket. 176 pages
First edition. This is the first full-length study of the leading American type foundry of the nineteenth century. It is an interesting history of the foundry from both a business and a design point of view. The emphasis is on the design of the hundreds of typefaces that were produced by the foundry, from its inception in the 1860s until its merger with most other American foundries at the end of the century. The author describes (with many detailed photographic illustrations) how changing business conditions and technical improvements in typefounding interacted with changes in public taste to modify, over the decades, the appearance of the typefaces that Americans found in their publications. While this is a study of only one of many American foundries, in many ways MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan can stand as an exemplar of all the rest. It was the descendant of the first successful American type foundry, Binny and Ronaldson, started in Philadelphia in 1796. Extensive business records of the firm exist, as do scores of type specimen books and promotional publications of the foundry. All of these have been used extensively by the author. The scores of typefaces illustrated and described are considered as the ever-changing output of a corporation, with lesser emphasis on the individual creators of each typeface. At the turn of the twentieth century, taste turned away from the florid, ornamented style of the earlier decades. Mr. Clouse has shown in this well-written study that the earlier styles were very successful in their own time and should be judged on that basis. A completely illustrated appendix showing MS&J's patented typefaces is extremely helpful.

Known throughout the world of typography, Abe Lerner was a highly respected and talented typographer/book designer with links to the likes of the great Bruce Rogers. Published as a tribute to this great typographer/book designer, this monograph is made up of nine short, nostalgic stories written about the man by friends and colleagues alike. The exhibition that formed the basis for this catalogue was commissioned by the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo in 1996 and drawn from the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library's Emma Dana Collection, as well as private collections. The exhibition and resulting catalogue examine one stream in Czech publishing between the wars - the work of the avant-garde. The examples on display demonstrate the links between Czech artists and the European avant-garde, which largely inspired them, and also make clear the Czechs' own special contributions to the international avant-garde movement. In addition, the exhibition places the work of the Czech avant-garde in context by the inclusion of a number of works by artists working in more traditional styles.

Includes a preface by James Howard Fraser and an introductory comment by Blanka Stehlikova, who also wrote an essay on "The Czech Avant-garde and Book Design: An Overview," and the catalogue of the exhibition. Includes full color reproductions of 89 items.

Edited by Richard J. Wolfe New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2010 5 x 7.25 inches hardcover 242 pages
New and Complete Manual on the Making of Fancy Papers was originally written in French by M. Fichtenberg in 1852. Richard Wolfe has translated the book into English, while including a new preface.

The craft of marbling paper was introduced into Europe and the Middle East from Turkey and Germany during the last two decades of the sixteenth century, and then into France in the first decade of the seventeenth century. England, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and other European countries began marbling as well, but the production outside of England still remained small. It was not until its introduction into the British Isles in 1750 that marbling increased in popularity.

The different countries had different methods and designs to their marbling. In France, marbling was first performed by bookbinders who catered mainly to the needs of the book trade. This often meant marbled papers were used for decorating "extra" bindings, or even sometimes made for people who restricted their output to wallpaper. Fortunately, the nineteenth century saw a change in French marbling, as they were introduced to a Turkish pattern containing an infusion of turpentine in the final color. This created an appearance of a network of fine, lacey holes.

New and Complete Manual on the Making of Fancy Papers documents the changes and innovations in French marbling and presents the marbling and fancy paper trades of the mid nineteenth century. It contains procedures and processes of manufacturing, particularly of non-marbled papers that had declined. Explaining the origins of the new quasi-marble designs, still seen in a large number of French bookbindings, it also details the precipitation of colors through examination of European and American marbling manuals.

This manual describes many steps in the marbling process. It describes the methods of making colors and the preparation of the aluminum serving to give body to the colors including reds and violets, yellows, blues, and greens. It discusses the preparation of hide glue, paste, glue, glazing, polishers, workshops, troughs, papers that are quilted, papers exhibiting the grain of wood, granite papers, printing, varnishing, sealing wax, and a variety of other details. Four pages of color illustrations complete the book.

With an Introduction by Hermann Zapf New York The Typophiles 2006 6 x 9 inches paperback 48 pages
Born in 1907, Gotthard de Beauclair spent most of his life learning about calligraphy, printing, typography, and book design. With his expertise and skillful technique, he produced some of the finest examples of limited edition books. Even now, his work stands as a model for superior bookmaking.

This catalogue includes an Introduction by Hermann Zapf and a brief history of de Beauclair's work as a student, typographer, designer, and bookmaker. It lists his endeavors at the Insel Verlag, the Stempel Typefoundry, various publishers, the Trajanus Presse, and others. A section of illustrations is also included. The book was set in Aldus, a typeface designed by Hermann Zapf (Gotthard de Beauclair was also instrumental in the font's conception).

While the leading book designer in Gernmany, Beauclair is not as well known in the United States. Many presses in Germany and around the world have given up the tradition of printing from metal type by letterpress. Run now as industrial companies, publishing companies are often merged focusing on mass production over quality. This book brings to light the typographic work used in Beauclair's exceptional publications in hopes of demonstrating that fine editions can still be produced today in exquisite detail, even despite the ever-growing technologies.
