Introduction by Aldous Huxley. London The Curwen Press 1928 large 4to. polished cloth, bevelled edges. xix, 83 pages with 122 reproductions of various examples of typography.
First edition, one of the 300 numbered copies to be printed at the Curwen Press on hand-made paper and containing a hand-printed page from the edition de luxe of Zola's Nana, with an original etching by Chas. Laborde. The facsimiles are often in two colors. With original prospectus loosely inserted. An excellent survey of the design of the printed book in England, America and Europe with contributions by Oliver Simon, Paul Beaujon and Julius Rodenberg. The Editor's note states: "The specimens in this book have been selected not so much to represent every publisher, printer and illustrator of distinction in each country, but rather to endeavour to indicate the general trend of the design of the printed book in Europe and the United States to-day". Some age darkening of creme colored cloth on spine.

Designed by Bradbury Thompson. Bradbury Thompson (1911-1995) was born in Topeka, Kansas and graduated from Washburn College in 1934. He designed for Westvaco, Mademoiselle, Art News and the Smithsonian among others. He had a unique style which included the experimental use of color, typography and photo reproduction. This Bible is also known as ( from the title page) The Easton Family Bible and The Washburn College Bible. The Washburn College Bible was originally published in 1979 by the College. Then is was published in a one-volume edition by Oxford University Press in 1980. Washburn College Bible and Oxford University Press appear on the slipcase, but Easton Press does not. The text is King James in Modern Paraphrase. The slipcase has taken the wear - a little soiled and worn at the edges. The Bible has a tiny chip in the leather at the lower edge of the rear board.

Arranged as follows: a) Introduction and general table of contents; b) photographs of the factory and showrooms in Amsterdam; c) brief samples (short texts, alphabets, figures) of selected bookfaces first by size and then by face, and then first by face and then by size, Some of these faces include Plantin, Cheltenham, Electa, Firenze, Aldine, and others; d) longer text samples of bookfaces in different sizes and spacings; e) selected bookfaces in short texts grouped by size, each text specimen accompanied by lines of typographically compatible bolds and cursives in various faces; f) "fantasy-types" (which seems to include display and ornamental faces, along with initials) in lines, texts, and sample advertising compositions; g) borders and ornaments, generally in sample compositions and often in different colors; h) "diverse" materials - rules, symbols, numbers, scientific and technical signs, etc., and i) German and oriental typefaces (Fraktur, Hebrew, Arabic, and so on). In all there are about 50 basic typeface styles in a wide range of variants. The text specimens are often elaborately printed, with borders, columns, illustrations and decorated initial letters. Bibliographies at ends of chapters, list of illustrations at end. Shaken, covers almost detached from block at back hinge. Jacket lightly chipped at top and bottom edges. Slipcase somewhat soiled, lightly worn, bumped on three of the back corners.
