First edition, one of 300 numbered and autographed copies. A landmark in the history of typography, the book is designed by master American typographer Goudy (1865 -1947). Set in University of California Old Style type, also designed by Goudy and used for the first time in this volume. The typographer describes his methods of type design and production in chapters such as:"The First Types"; "What Type Is"; "The Design of Types"; "Details of Construction"; "Making the Patterns"; and others. Some of the chapters written originally as magazine articles and revised for this book. Black and white illustrations throughout. Produced with collaboration of Samuel T. Hoe & Company, a manufacuturer of printing presses, when he was eighteen. He patented the first flat bed and cylinder press in the United States, as well as type-revolving machines and the first true rotary press for printing newspapers. The catalogue introduction notes that no comparable library of typographical works and printing history has ever been offered for sale to American buyers. Many lots have prices realized in the margin. Removed from binder and binding partially broken.
