This specimen book details samples of the R.H. Stevens & Co. faces, borders, and symbols. The type specimen book and catalogue of printing materials from R.H. Stevens, who succeeded V. & F. Figgins in 1907, a firm originally founded in 1792, and later carried on as Stevens, Shanks & Sons. In 1874 the firm began a new series of specimen books in octavo in an edition of 5000 copies, giving an idea of its importance at that time. Lacking the smaller second catalogue on printing material. Cover completely missing (front, spine, rear). Some chipping, but overall text block beautiful and intact. Bumped at bottom of spine. Price list dated 1912 tipped-in.

Collection of three type specimen catalogs displaying the borders and ornaments offered by Sterling Type Foundry. Includes company logos, decorative embellishments, symbols, and insignia. Catalog 17 has 1/2" squares removed from pages 3/4 and 11/12, and page 7/8 has a 1" x 1 3/4" inch square removed. Catalog 18 is missing a small circle from page 11/12. Several decorations have been removed from catalog 19 but most remain. Catalog 18 has a 2 1/2" split at the spine but otherwise, the catalogs have only minor shelf wear.
