With a career that landed him as the Director of Design and Production at Macmillan, President of the Typophiles, and lecturer at the Grolier Club in New York, Abe Lerner was certainly one of our finest typographic designers of the 20th century. Published as a tribute to this great typographer/book designer, this monograph is made up of nine short, nostalgic stories written about the man by friends and colleagues alike. As Daniel Berkley Updike's successor, from 1896-1912, Bruce Rogers worked at Houghton Mifflin's Riverside Press. This history of Bruce Rogers' work while at the Riverside Press was taken directly from the archives of his letters. Included in this book is how Rogers came to produce the series called Riverside Press Editions, as well as other special and limited editions. These books were made with handmade paper and the finest ink available. This work includes a checklist of 102 books and broadsides Rogers designed for Houghton Mifflin and other publishers, including publication date and publication price, typeface, and edition size. Thirty-six color plates are printed in the final part of the book. Beautifully designed by Kelly and printed in a digital version of the Brimmer typeface. Edition of 500 of which 323 copies with this imprint were produced.

Limited to 700 copies. Originally printed and limited to only 150 copies, this legendary three-volume work describes over 1,300 English literary rare books and manuscripts in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Library, one of the foremost American collections of early English literature, now housed at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. The original catalogue, extremely difficult and expensive to find on the antiquarian market (normally priced around the $8,000 mark), fully describes all the books and manuscripts in Pforzheimer's collection of English literature, making it a most valuable reference for the scholar, researcher, librarian, book collector and bookseller. This work puts each description into various contexts: authorship, textual authority, sequence of editions and publishing history, reference concordance and rarity. The collection also gathers together the best books by the best authors in this period of English literature. Begun by Emma V. Unger and completed by William A. Jackson, the catalogue is primarily arranged in alphabetical order by author. Translations and anonymous books in most cases have been placed under the name of the translator or the attributed author. These can be readily found through full cross references and in the Index of Anonymous Books. In addition, a new addendum consisting of thirteen pages of books added later to the Library are included. Originally designed by Frederic Warde, Bruce Rogers completed the work with additional design and title pages after Warde's untimely death. After the acquisition of the Library by the University of Texas at Austin in 1986, many scholars, librarians and booksellers have urged the University to republish this catalogue. Now reproduced with great care and attention to quality, this new printing preserves Jackson's matchless style and Rogers's design. This edition is published jointly by Oak Knoll Press and Heritage Book Shop Inc. in a press run of 700 copies. The text is printed on quality 60 lb. Natural Smooth paper. The volumes are strongly bound in cloth with gold-stamped titles on the spines and the Pforzheimer monogram on the front boards.

This beautifully produced volume celebrates the centennial of Boston's Society of Printers, the oldest honorary society of its kind in America. Founded in 1905 by such luminaries as Daniel Berkeley Updike, Bruce Rogers, Henry Lewis Johnson, Carl Purington Rollins, and William Dana Orcutt, the Society's dedicated membership over the years has included the likes of William A. Dwiggins (who in 1922 actually coined the term "graphic design"), Rudolph Ruzicka, John Howard Benson, Ray Nash, Roderick Stinehour, Dorothy Abbe, Hermann Zapf, Philip Hofer, Leonard Baskin, and Matthew Carter.
The book's ten original essays cover unusually broad ground for such a publication, not only delving into the Society's history and Boston's, but also into more philosophical terrain, examining questions such as the definition of printing itself, the political and sociological worlds of some prominent members, and the grand-scale game of "musical chairs" played by those who have called themselves "printers" over the past hundred years. An essay on type and lettering design among the SP membership and its circle is especially rich, comprising interviews with leading practitioners and including information on these crafts that cannot be found elsewhere. A review of a century of meeting announcements is a microcosmic history of American graphic design and printing techniques in the 20th century. Also examined are the habits of the great book collectors among the Society's members, and the distinguished group who have continued in the realm of handmade books and fine letterpress printing.
The authors are all noted scholars and practitioners: Lance Hidy, Jean Evans, Eleanor M. Garvey, James E. Mooney, Barry Moser, Katherine McCanless Ruffin, Darrell Hyder, Al Gowan, Victor Curran, and Scott-Martin Kosofsky. The designer of the book is the renowned Roderick Stinehour, who contributed a colophon that is a fine essay in its own right. Scott-Martin Kosofsky, well-known designer and author of Judaic works, edited the volume. As one might expect from a book produced by and for The Society of Printers, the Design and Execution are exceptional. The illustrations have been rendered in stunning four-color tone, making everything from the black-and-white images to the full color illustrations crisp and eye-catching. By tracing the development of type design, Updike discusses the importance of each historic period and the lessons they contain for today's designers. The original two-volume set has been combined into one book containing the original 367 typographical illustrations selected from rare and beautiful books. Updike's well-written text constitutes a running commentary on the historical and artistic significance of these illustrations, which exemplify the best work of printers and type founders from Gutenberg to Bruce Rogers. In Volume I, Mr. Updike discusses the Latin alphabet, the invention of printing, the cutting and casting of types, fifteenth-century types in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and England, as well as German, Italian and French types of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Volume II continues the discussion of types to the beginning of the nineteenth century and then describes American types and nineteenth-century types in general. The closing chapters on choice of type and the industrial conditions of the past and their relationship to problems printers face are very informative. Co-published with The British Library.
