Sotheby's sold portions of the spectacular library of English collector John Roland Abbey (1894-1969) while he was still alive and other portions following his death. These catalogues of the sales include descriptions of lots 695 - 2904 and numerous photographic illustrations--some in color, some folding. The exteriors of this set show minor soiling and minor to moderate wear. The cover is cracking a little at the upper front joint of volume 2 and has split at the lower back joint of volume 7. Volumes 3, 4, and 7 have the markings of formerly belonging to a public library collection. A price-list with buyers' names for the volume 5 auction is loosely laid-in.

Handbook with prices for antiquarian book sellers and collectors. The cloth of this copy has split at the joints. The upper portion of the spine has pulled away from the book block. Someone has attempted to repair the front joint with clear tape. The cover also has darkened unevenly, shows some soiling and is worn at the corners. The gilding is still present on the upper edges but barely. A penned signature of a former owner (Sarah Dickson) appears on the front free endpaper. The leaves have darkened and become brittle at the edges and near the front and back of the book. The half-title is loose but present; the title page is barely attached. A few leaves have lost fragments at the edges.

Jean Grolier can be considered a window to the history of French culture. He was interested in Italian and French scholarship, music and publications, antiquarian books, book collecting, and more. The Grolier Club has been named after this "prince of bibliophiles." This book is a groundbreaking study of the legendary bibliophile and patron of printing. Colin Eisler provides an informational and historical introductory study on Jean Grolier and the Renaissance that includes a full-page color illustration of Grolier's Painted Arms and Emblematic Device. It also contains eight full-page black-and-white illustrations including an Italian plaquette binding and various forms of Grolier's signature.

The bibliography includes books and essays that discuss Grolier bindings in different collections, in addition to contemporary references to Jean Grolier. The extensive catalogue lists books from the library of Jean Grolier, providing author, title, editor, imprint, size, provenance, booksellers, catalogues of private libraries and auction sales, and catalogues of institutional libraries. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author, Greek authors are listed in their English form, Roman authors in Latin form, and others in their colloquial form. The book was designed by Greta Franzen and printed by the Halliday Lithograph Corporation.
