See More... (Yale College Library) Mooney, James E. (editor) EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY CATALOGUES OF THE YALE COLLEGE LIBRARY
(New Haven, CT) Yale University 2001 8to stiff paper wrappers xxi, (224) pages
This book reproduces in facsimile each page of the printed catalogues of the Yale College Library issued in 1743, 1755, and 1791, accompanied by an index that identifies authors and titles and is keyed to these facsimile pages. The introduction tells the story of the early books of this collection from long before there was a Yale College Library in which to place them. It examines the legend of the "Forty Folios" and describes the major early gifts from Jeremiah Dummer, Elihu Yale, George Berkeley, and others that made it possible for the new college to build its collection without spending a cent for books. The use of the books during the 18th century is described and a comparison is made with similar catalogues of Harvard College. There is a list of selected sources used for this introduction as a guide for further study.

Athens Sylvia Ioannou Foundation 2009 9.75 x 13.25 inches cloth, dust jacket 358 pages
In its third edition, this catalogue covers a period of more than 300 years of printed European cartography concerning Greece. With nearly 4,000 maps listed alphabetically by the makers names and 500 black-and-white illustrations, this is the most inclusive cartographical bibliography produced about Greece from the period of 1477 to 1800.

Maps are listed in alphabetical order under the name of the particular cartographer, publisher, and engraver. Variant maps also show some of the inaccuracies of the time including the Ptolemaic style of cartography for Greece.

An area of special attention is the Eastern Mediterranean basin, which has been the center of the civilized European world for many centuries. The cartographic descriptions of the region were especially necessary during ancient times, and relevant maps of the area were followed up and developed by the efficient Byzantine administration. Such rich material was later used by European cartographers of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

Like any other scientific and artistic activity of the period under review, cartography was influenced by the intense interest in Greece and enhanced by the revival of Greek culture and the flourishing of classical studies during and after the Renaissance.

2 volumes bound in 1. Mansfield Centre Martino Publishing 2005 thick 8vo. cloth. xii,428; (iv),429-964 pages.
Reprint of the 1921 first edition published by Henry Sotheran in London. With 127 plates containing 247 portraits and facsimiles. With a Subject Index. This catalogue was started in 1906 based on a large collection of books in exact and applied science and was expanded to reach about three hundred pages. It grew as it went, and, by the end of the alphabet, so many more works in allied subjects, as well as other and interesting copies of books already described, had come in, that a Supplement was begun, still more fully annotated, which far exceeded the size of the original scheme. This is perhaps the first historical catalogue of Science published in any country giving at once the current price of each book included, bibliographical particulars, and many biographical and historical references, both in the descriptions themselves and in the notes. 17397 items are described. There is a wealth of information provided, including plate count and frequent annotation. An index is provided. Though later expanded, these are the basic and still most important volumes. An extensive index is provided.

(Zoology) Wood, Casey A. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LITERATURE OF VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY, BASED CHIEFLY ON THE TITLES IN THE BLACKER LIBRARY OF ZOOLOGY, THE EMMA SHEARER WOOD LIBRARY OF ORNITHOLOGY, THE BIBLIOTHECA OSLERIANA AND OTHER LIBRARIES OF McGILL UNIVERSITY, MONTREAL.
Mansfield Centre, CT Martino Publishing 2004 thick 8to. tall cloth. xix, 643+(1) pages.
Reprint of the first edition of the 1931 first edition. (Besterman 6406). Historical introduction of 149 pages in which the author describes the literature and comments on its importance, followed by a bibliography describing over 15,000 titles. This useful bibliography is divided into three sections. Nineteen chapters preceding the actual catalogue of publications in this work evidence a comprehensive knowledge of the history and purport of zoological literature. Section A reviews the literature of vertebrate zoology, so far as it is represented in McGill libraries, from the earliest times to 1930. Section B furnishes a convenient, short-title index of the same literature arranged geographically and in chronological order. Section C, the largest of the three, is a partially annotated catalogue of the printed books, periodicals, original drawings and manuscripts in the Blacker and other zoological collections of McGill, to which have been added important other holdings. In all, 15,000 items are described, many with useful annotations.
Casey A. Wood was born in Ontario in 1856. Born of American parents in Wellington, educated in Canada and Europe, and, after his professional career in England, residing in the United States, Dr. Wood was an international figure.
