New Castle & London Oak Knoll Press & The British Library 2010 7 x 10 inches hardcover with dust jacket 496 pages, plus CD-ROM with images
Tom Stoppard, whose writing career spans over half a century, is one of the most prolific of living British authors. This bibliographical history provides a comprehensive account of the print-published writings, and texts in other media, which he has wholly or partially authored. It will be an indispensable resource for all who have a scholarly interest in modern British literature, drama and cinematic scripts.

As a creator of texts in dramatic form for live theatre, radio, television or cinema, Stoppard has won Tony awards and Oscars. He has composed short stories, a novel, and a large number of non-fictional prose writings, such as essays, articles, published speeches and letters to periodicals. This bibliography records for the first time his innumerable articles including investigative journalism, and film and theatre reviews penned as a young working journalist. Also included are interviews recorded in print or other media and interview-based articles. The bibliography documents other texts generated from Stoppard's interests in literary projects, human rights, and other causes as a champion of freedom of expression, with forewords to books, short notes, jointly authored letters, signatures to petitions, declarations and other material. A Bibliographic History provides a guide to Tom Stoppard's obsessive creative revisions and also documents the countless translations of his work.

William Baker is a Board of Trustees Professor and Distinguished Research Professor at Northern Illinois University. His interest in bibliography and librarianship resulted in his gaining the MLS degree from the University of Loughborough. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Bibliographical Society of America, the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Gerald N. Wachs, MD, is an eminent New York based dermatologist and book-collector with a unique Stoppard Collection upon which this bibliographical history is based. With hundreds of color illustrations on the inserted CD-ROM.

See More... Stotter, Lawrence H. TO PUT ASUNDER: THE LAWS OF MATRIMONIAL STRIFE
Berkeley Lawrence H. Stotter 2011 8.25 x 10 inches hardcover, dust jacket 416 pages
Taking its cue from Matthew 19:6, "What, therefore, God hath joined together, let not man put asunder," this book describes humankind's actions in doing just that.

A readable selected history of family law, To Put Asunder traverses more than two thousand years of continuing attempts by various societies to inhibit the desires of men and women, kings and commoners, to terminate their unsatisfactory marriages. The stories revealed are surprisingly engaging when the reader is introduced to the lives and personalities of some who were directly affected by family law.

Examining court proceedings, the policies of church and state, scholarly literature, and the anger and frustration of unhappy spouses, Lawrence Stotter reports on the path of the domestic relations laws adopted in Western civilization. By clarifying the philosophy and goals behind the development of divorce laws in biblical times and tribal societies, under the influences of early Greek and Roman civilization, during the rule of the Roman Catholic Church, after the impact of the Reformation and Henry VIIIs Church of England, and with the modifications brought about by the founders of Colonial America up through the beginning of the twentieth century, Stotter makes clear the reasons for, and the foundations of, our current divorce provisions.

Lawrence Stotter provides, in five separate and extensive appendices, more than one hundred pages of bibliographic sources, never previously brought together in this manner.

Now retired, Lawrence H. Stotter has been a nationally renowned trial lawyer, specializing in family law litigation. For more than twenty years he was annually recognized in each issue of Naifeh and Smiths The Best Lawyers in America. His exploits in recovering a child wrongfully taken from his schoolroom in France and hidden for several years by a vengeful father became the pilot chapter for Emily Courics best-selling 1992 book Divorce Lawyers: The People and Stories Behind Ten Dramatic Cases. Over several decades, in his avocation as a scholar and collector of antiquarian literature on family law, Stotter established a collection that included a copy of nearly every English-language treatise published on the subject over a span of more than four centuries. The collection is now on permanent display at the Michael E. Moritz Law Library of the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University.

Lawrence Stotter resides with Ruth, his wife of more than fifty years and a renowned folklorist and storyteller, in their home in Tiburon, California, overlooking San Francisco Bay.

New Castle, Delaware and Oxford Oak Knoll Press and The Bodleian Library 2010 6 x 9 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 160 pages
Set up in 1968, John Fuller's Sycamore Press published some of the most influential and critically acclaimed writers of the past half-century. Operating from a garage, the press published established authors, such as W. H. Auden, Philip Larkin and Peter Porter, as well as promoting young poets, including James Fenton and Alan Hollinghurst. The Sycamore Press ceased operations in 1992, but it remains an excellent example of the unique qualities associated with the small press movement in England.

In addition to a full descriptive bibliography, the book includes an evocative foreword by John Fuller, who wryly describes the trials and tribulations of 'garage' publishing. In a transcribed interview with the author, John Fuller explains why a pamphlet of poems took almost a year to produce as he experimented with letterpress technology. Personal reflections by Sycamore Press authors, such as Andrew Motion and Thom Gunn, illuminate the publishing process further and show what a powerful role John Fuller played in the lives of young poets lucky enough to be published by him.

While this book is full of entertaining anecdotes about the hazards of small book publishing, it also provides invaluable advice for small press printers.

Ryan Roberts is a Professor and Librarian at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. He also maintains the official websites for Ian McEwan, Julian Barnes, Hermione Lee, and James Fenton. He is co-editor of a volume of interviews with Julian Barnes and editor of a volume of interviews with Ian McEwan for the University Press of Mississippi's Literary Conversations Series.

Winchester and New Castle, Delaware St. Paul's Bibliographies and Oak Knoll Press 1996 8vo. cloth. 340 pages
First edition. Preface by H.R.F. Keating. The sixth volume of the Winchester Bibliographies of Twentieth Century Writers series. This is the first and only bibliography of Julian Symons to include a personal memoir and commentaries by Symons himself. According to Keating, a frequent motif of Symons's fiction is his use of the mask, whether as a disguise or a metaphor for the elegantly exposed hypocrisies of everyday life. As a literary critic, social historian, biographer, essayist, editor and poet, Symons was one of the most distinguished authors and expositors of the postwar British crime novel. His mystery writing career began with the publication of THE IMMATERIAL MURDER CASE (1945) and was later known for such works as THE COLOUR OF MURDER (1957), THE MAN WHO LOST HIS WIFE (1970) and DEATH'S DARKEST FACE (1990). He succeeded Dame Agatha Christie as President of the Detection Club (1976 to 1985) and was awarded the 1990 Cartier Diamond Dagger from the British Crime Writers Association for lifetime achievement in the world of crime fiction. A standard reference, JULIAN SYMONS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY will not only illuminate the richness of Symons's lesser-known early works, as well as chronicling his well-known masterworks, but its autobiographical personal memoir will also add insight to Symons's life beyond the page.

New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Press 2001 8vo. cloth, dust jacket 192 pages
First edition. When people think of Bewick, they are generally thinking of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) and his superlative wood engravings of animals and birds. Thomas skill and reputation largely obscured the artistic recognition of his younger brother, John Bewick, as an accomplished wood engraver illustrating mostly children's books.
Yet John Bewick was one of the earliest, if not the earliest, designer-engravers in England to make his living exclusively by illustrating books. His popularity resulted in producing illustrations and engravings for 60 books - mostly children's books - during a tragically short working life.
This is the first book entirely devoted to this remarkable wood engraver. It consists of two parts. The first is a biography of the artist, drawing upon largely unpublished but highly detailed and entertaining correspondence, which has surfaced in the last few years. The second part provides a comprehensive, annotated bibliography of John Bewick's illustrations. This has been made possible by Nigel Tattersfield's discovery of John Bewick's own ledger of commissions dating back to 1791.

Incunabula of the Low Countries (ILC) is a census of fifteenth-century books printed in the area of the present-day Netherlands and Belgium. It lists 2,229 editions in more than 14,300 copies preserved in hundreds of libraries, museums, and archives all over the world, but mainly in Europe and the USA. The entries for this census have been derived from the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC), the database of incunabula compiled at the British Library. They combine research on Low Countries incunabula carried out by Gerard van Thienen, curator at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, with data assembled by ISTC form other sources. ISTC entries were further edited, indexed and prepared for publication by John Goldfinch at the British Library. Campbell's Annales of 1874, the first bibliography of incunabula printed in the Low Countries with 1794 entries, was followed by a number of supplements of increasing complexity, the most extensive being published by M.E. Kronenberg in 1956. All the former additions and emendations, together with additions not otherwise listed before are now brought together and included in one sequence in ILC.

Tolias, George MAPPING GREECE, 1420-1800, A HISTORY.
Maps in the Margarita Samourkas Collection.
Catalogue of maps compiled by Leonora Navari. New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press, HES & DE GRAAF, and National Hellenic Research Foundation 2012 11.5 x 11.5 inches hardcover, dust jacket 546 pages
Mapping Greece is a richly illustrated history of the cartography of Greece during the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, based on the Margarita Samourka Map Collection (one of the most important collections of its kind in private hands in Greece) that consists of 1,700 maps of Greece. Divided into five chapters, the book contains an introduction, conclusions, and an appendix.

Summarizing the foundations of the mapping of Greece as established by the classical and medieval cartographic tradition with the Ptolemaic revival, the maritime portolan chart, the mappa mundi, and the local cartography of early humanism, this book shows the rise and development of the regional concept of Greece and its establishment of cartographic conventions. Various chapters discuss the standardization of the regional maps of Greece in "the age of the atlas," an era of commercialization of the printed map, and the wide dissemination of these maps. Four prefaces written by George Tolias, Paschallis M. Kitromildes, Christos G. Zacharakis, and Margarita Samourkas discuss each one's thoughts on this ambitious and comprehensive project.

Also discussed is the application of modern surveying technology to the mapping of Greece, the work of astronomers and mariners, topographical commentaries, and the production of maps of ancient geography and historical maps of Greece from the end of the sixteenth century onwards. Richly illustrated in a large format, with an overwhelming number of beautiful maps illustrations, Mapping Greece contains a detailed catalogue of the maps in the Margarita Samourka collection compiled by Leonora Navari. The Margarita Samourka collection includes maps of all parts of Greece and of historical Greek regions. It is significant for its breadth and its chronological development beginning with Italian map engravers and publishers of the sixteenth century to the French reformation of cartography in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Finally, the book provides an overall summary of the series of definitions and perceptions of Greece which emerge in the maps of the region during the centuries of foreign domination, and an assessment of the contribution of maps of Greece to the general history of cartography.

London Ian Hodgkins & Co. Ltd. 2012 6 x 9 inches hardcover 228 pages
This is an essential guide for any devotee of Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit and of illustrators of childrens books during this period. Illustrated with eight pages of color photographs, this bibliography contains over 300 entries published between 1904 and 1980. It seeks to describe all titles published in the United States that are versions of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, or use the name of Peter Rabbit, and were not authorized by Frederick Warne.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first issued privately in a total of 450 copies by Beatrix Potter and was then published by Frederick Warne in 1902. Obtaining copyright in the USA at that time was fraught with difficulties, particularly for foreign publishers. Warne failed to comply with the formalities, and the book entered the public domain in the USA. The book immediately became a huge commercial success throughout the world and has remained that way ever since. Between 1904 and 1980, about 80 publishers issued their own versions of the story.

In many cases the text and/or illustrations did not follow Potters originals, and others were credited as the author and illustrator. Some books are to be regarded as derivatives of the well-known story. The books are arranged alphabetically by publisher, and entries detail publisher, illustrator, title page, binding, and more. Following the bibliography is a list of further readings, and indexes of titles, authors and illustrators.

First Edition. John Updike is internationally renowned for his novels, short stories, poems, essays and criticism. He has won two Pulitzers, the National Book Award, the American Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and many other prizes. Updike has written a "Foreword to My Own Bibliography" especially for this book.
This definitive guide to materials by and about this prolific American author consists of a printed first volume and a second volume on CD (a first for Oak Knoll Press). The A and B sections of Volume I, concerning separately printed works by Updike and books to which he has contributed, are superb examples of descriptive bibliography. The printed volume also features over 500 grayscale images of book covers, jackets, broadsides, and many seldom seen items. It includes comprehensive listings of Updike's short fiction, poems, articles, essays, and reviews, as well as extensive documentation of letters, speeches, dramatic works, manuscripts, interviews, and blurbs. Volume II contains entries for material about Updike and his work (reviews, commentary, and theses), several appendices (media appearances, work read by others, works in translation, exhibits and catalogs), and full-color versions of images appearing in the printed volume. John Updike: a Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Materials, 1948-2007 provides an indispensable guide to Updike's work and commentary about it.
Jack De Bellis, professor emeritus of English (Lehigh University), has authored The John Updike Encyclopedia (2000) and John Updike: Critical Responses to the "Rabbit" Saga (2004), as well as several essays and reviews concerning Updike's novels. This bibliography greatly expands his 1994 compilation for Greenwood Press. De Bellis has also published two books on the poet Sidney Lanier, and articles on writers ranging from Shakespeare to Ken Kesey, and from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Truman Capote. His first published work, on Andrew Lytle, was a bibliography. De Bellis was a Fulbright scholar to the University of Toulouse in France. He lives with his wife in Allentown, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia where he was born.
Michael Broomfield, a corporate lawyer by profession, has become, over the past 40 years, a preeminent collector of first editions and other materials by a number of American writers, including Raymond Carver, E.E. Cummings, William Faulkner, Joseph Heller, Robinson Jeffers and many living authors. Collecting work in many forms, Broomfield displays remarkable attention to detail and an acute understanding of the complexities of editions. He has what is probably the most extensive private collection of John Updike materials. This bibliography is Broomfield's first book. He lives in New York City with his wife and their daughter.
