See More... (Art) Pollen, John Hungerford UNIVERSAL CATALOGUE OF BOOKS ON ART, VOL.I A-K / VOL.2 L-Z / VOL.III SUPPLEMENTARY VOLUME.
3 volumes. New York Burt Franklin n.d. large 8vo. cloth. (ii),ix,(iii),1030; (iv),1061-2188; (iv),655+(1) pages.
Burt Franklin reprint (their Bibliography and Reference series, no. 47) of the original 1870 and 1877 works published by the South Kensington Museum in London. See Besterman 523 for the original. In the 1860's, the Kensington Museum decided to publish a kind of union catalogue of "books on art," based on library holdings in England and elsewhere. To be included were books on "Painting, Sculpture, Architecture; on Mosaics, Enamels; hand-wrought utensils in all materials which show a decorative intention; on tombs, monuments bearing sculpture, and on decoration..." (preface by the editor, John Hungerford Pollen), along with other items of potential interest to art students, including illustrated editions of literary works. Music was excluded. In 1870, the Museum issued a kind of cumulated preliminary version, with about 60,000 entries, arranged simply by author/title in brief, unnumbered entries, with no systematic subject access or indexing. A supplementary volume in the same format, with about 18,000 entries, followed in 1877. With the bookplate and pencil signature of Gavin Bridson.

(Ashendene Press) Hornby, C.H. St J. A DESCRIPTIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BOOKS PRINTED AT THE ASHENDENE PRESS MDCCCXCV - MCMXXXV.
Chelsea Ashendene Press 1935 4to. full leather with a stamped gilt design on the front cover and title in gilt on spine, five raised bands, top edge gilt, others uncut, original marbled paper-covered slipcase. (viii), 172 pages.
Limited to 390 numbered and signed copies (Bibliography XL; Leaf Book - Chalmers 65). The last book of the press. Printed on paper specially made by Joseph Batchelor & Sons and hand-printed by Hornby. Contains an historical introduction by Hornby followed by the detailed bibliographical descriptions of both the books and the ephemera printed at the press. Illustrated with collotype and photogravures (printed by Emery Walker), showing plates of bindings and several of the hand-painted vellum copies. Also includes examples of woodcuts, facsimile pages from important books, printer's marks, samples of initial letters, watermarks, and a few actual specimens of press work (thus making this a leaf book). With some initial letters filled in by hand by Graily Hewitt. Hornby's introduction is most informative about his goals in establishing the Press, and also reveals his personality and sense of humor - at one point he jokes about collectors' frustrations at obtaining copies of a book with a very small limitation. Four page prospectus of books dated February, 1931, loosely inserted. Slipcase shows minor rubbing. Leather rubbed along hinges with rub through at bottom of spine.

See More... Ashley, Mike THE AGE OF THE STORYTELLERS.
British Popular Fiction Magazines 1880-1950 New Castle, Delaware, and London, UK Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2006 9.5 x 7.5 inches cloth 320 pages with 72 color and 60 b/w illustrations
The years from 1880 to 1950 were the golden age of storytelling, seeing the creation of such famous fictional characters as Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu, Father Brown, Hercule Poirot, even Winnie the Pooh. This was the age of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Buchan, A.E.W. Mason, Sapper, Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett and so many more. It was an age that coincided with the glory of the popular monthly illustrated magazine, typified by The Strand, which set the standard for popular fiction with the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Strand soon encouraged rivals and imitators such as Pearson's Magazine, The Windsor, The Royal, Pall Mall, The Idler and many more.
This is the first reference guide to consider these magazines in detail, providing coverage of 144 titles, seventy in full-length entries, charting their contribution to and influence upon popular literature. There are illustrations reproducing covers and features from every magazine, with 72 color images, including many magazines that are now extremely rare. In addition to much new information this book also considers the collecting significance of these titles and will be of importance to collectors and bookdealers as well as literary researchers and bibliophiles.
The author has spent over forty years researching popular literature in all its forms. He has published over seventy books including the biography of Algernon Blackwood, Starlight Man, studies of the development of the science-fiction magazine, The Time Machines and Transformations, and the award-winning Mammoth Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction.

Winchester, England and New Castle, DE St. Paul's Bibliographies and Oak Knoll Press 1997 thick 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xxii, 877 pages.
This bibliography has become the standard work on this classic 19th-century author. With the revival of her books in films and television programs such as EMMA, SENSE & SENSIBILITY and PERSUASION within recent years, her popularity has increased among literary and film enthusiasts as well as her name among the general public. With the reprint of this rare and hard to find bibliography, last corrected in 1985 but now with a new introduction by the author, book collectors, librarians and booksellers will find its publication timely and its importance and usefulness greater than ever. The descriptions follow the principles laid down in Gaskell's A NEW INTRODUCTION TO BIBLIOGRAPHY and include physical description, technical notes, publishing history and reviews, adding where possible, contemporary commentary and details of sale-room records. This edition of the bibliography reprints the 1982 edition, but includes a list of corrections even more extensive than those incorporated in the 1985 corrected reprint. The sections cover original editions, first American editions, translations, editions published by Richard Bentley, later editions and selections, minor works, letters, dramatizations, continuations and completions, books owned by Austen, miscellaneous, and biography and criticism. This work is fully-indexed and well-illustrated.

See More... (Bates, H.E.) Eads, Peter H.E. BATES: A BIBLIOGRAPHICAL STUDY.
New Castle and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2007 6 x 9 inches hardcover 240 pages
Reprint of the first edition. Back in print! As a schoolboy, H.E. Bates (1905-74) decided to devote his life to writing and at the age of twenty-one published his first novel. Thereafter he wrote steadily: short stories, novels and journal articles on gardening and country matters. His collections of essays were illustrated by leading contemporary wood engravers, including Agnes Miller Parker and John Nash. During World War Two, as "Flying Officer X," H.E. Bates' writings on the exploits of RAF pilots and other members of the Air Force were phenomenally successful in the UK and USA. The novel, Fair Stood the Wind for France published in 1943, was an immediate success; and again in 1958, The Darling Buds of May, the first of four novels about the Larkins family, was a bestseller. Peter Eads gives full details of first editions of all Bates' work and adds comments from reviews and the writer's autobiography. Short stories, poems, essays and articles are listed chronologically, with full details of the journals and collections in which they were published. Co-published with The British Library.
