  • See More... (Center for Book Arts) "Jaldaboath" STREET LIFE IN LONDON REDEEMED.
created by Andrew Atkinson (New York Center for Book Arts 2003) small 8vo. black cloth with title illustration in gray on cover 24 pages
Published in a limited edition of 50 copies, each signed and numbered by "Jaldaboath." An early example of social and documentary photography, Street Life in London, by Adolph Smith and John Thomson, is the basis of this volume. Originally published in 1878, it was a project to photograph the street life of the London poor using the Woodburytype photomechanical process.

The Nag Hammadi Library is the source of information about the worldview of the Gnostics and their blend of Platonic knowledge and Christo-Judaic understanding of the world. Characters from the Nag Hammadi texts are used as quasi historical people, involved in seeking redemption. Jaldaboath is a fallen character within gnosis, and as creator of the mundane world, is seeking to redeem himself through mundane means, namely through a neurotic and modern attachment to the safety signs that articulate our bureaucratic environments. Jaldaboath's work is the principle object of study within the findings of the recently re-opened Nag Hammadi site and an endless source of interest and pity to Pistis Sophia, who edits, compiles, and interprets the photographs, writings, objects, and miscellany of the absent Jaldaboath in an effort to unveil the modern world.

Andrew Atkinson re-conceptualized the original source material to create a conceptual work of art. He printed this work during his 2003 Sally R. Bishop Residency. Includes three black-and-white photographs individually mounted on separate pages.

Winterthur, DE (Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum) 1994 small 4to. cloth, dust jacket viii, 268, (2) pages
First edition. Initially influenced by David Wilkie, William Hogarth and Benjamin West, John Lewis Krimmel was a German immigrant who worked in Philadelphia between 1809 and 1821. Harding traces the development of the artist, who was America's first genre painter, through his sketchbook images and oil paintings. Seven sketchbooks, now in the Winterthur Library, contain about 700 separate drawings and are the key to reconstructing his conceptual processes. They show clear distinctions in subject matter and drawing style commensurate with the stylistic development evident in his paintings. Harding places genre art in an international context by discussing Krimmel's work in terms of larger stylistic trends and defines his use of democratic and moralizing themes within the political and social changes affecting Philadelphia and the Continent. With 113 color plates and 246 black-and-white illustrations. Includes bibliography and index.

See More... (Lumsden & Son) Roscoe, S. and R.A. Brimmell JAMES LUMSDEN & SON OF GLASGOW, THEIR JUVENILE BOOKS AND CHAPBOOKS.
Pinner Private Library Association 1981 tall 8vo. cloth. xxv, 134 pages.
First edition. Little information regarding the firm of James Lumsden and Son has survived. It seems they first became interested in publishing books for children around the end of the eighteenth century. Although the firm attracted little notice in their own age, their juvenile books have now become collector's pieces.
Lumsden books show a distinctive quality: it is not easy to define and does not hold in all cases, but these books are easily recognizable to the experienced eye. It is a certain trimness (primness one might almost call it) in the covers, the quality of the paper used, the excellent typeface and the occasional use of colored inks. This important reference book contains 172 lengthy bibliographical descriptions of these fascinating books. There is also an historical introduction which describes the type of books published by this intriguing firm. Available in North and South America; other areas from the Private Library Association.
