Compared to some earlier productions, the 1850 catalogue is rather sophisticated, combining a classified catalogue of about 4,990 main entries, an index of authors and subjects of biographies, a selective alphabetical list of titles "such as are most popular and more liable to be looked for under the title...," and a selected list of works by subject. Covers worn with both hinges cracked and covers close to becoming loose.

First edition of this index to the collections in the New York State Library, which contains short descriptions of over 86,000 titles, 23,400 of which are in the Law Library. All State, Legislative and Parliamentary documents are kept there. This index was proposed as a cost-saving measure because of the difficulty and expense of producing another general catalogue like the 1855 issue. A remarkable piece of catalogue work with over 600 subject categories organized under five major headings. A New York State Library bookplate is on the front pastedown. Corners bumped, front and back hinges cracked.

Besterman 1572, 4266 for the entire work) listing manuscript items by or related to Danish and Norwegian writers, mostly of the 19th through the early 20th centuries. Vols. 1 and 2 cover names from Aagaard to Hermann, and Hertz to Thoresen, or about 135 and 200 authors, respectively. Entries may be short or lengthy: N.F.S. Grundtvig has 27 pages! Longer entries have divisions (not well-delineated) by type of material (personalia, notebooks, works (by type), etc.) which are in turn subdivided by collection numbers consisting of a name--"New Royal Collection," "Collins Collection," etc.--plus a number referring to a specific folio or other unit within that collection, and a listing of the items under that collection number relevant to the specific author and material. Besterman gives 2,000 items. Unopened. Wrappers lighly soiled, chipped; covers a little loose at hinges.

First edition. In 1784, John Dickinson presented books selected from the library of his father-in-law, Isaac Norris, to Dickinson College. These books, which became the foundation of the College's library, represent a substantial portion of Isaac Norris's own collection. This gift, a collection of 1,902 titles and 1,705 volumes, contains a small number of theological works in English, and classic works in Latin, French, Greek, German, Italian, and Dutch. Eight of the titles include those by Aristotle, eight by Cicero, copies of Euripides, Virgil, Terence, Tacitus, and Suetonius, Ovid's AMATORIA, Thucydides in a French edition, but no Horace. The gift also contained innumerable works on Socianism, Jansenism, quietism, and other religious movements. There is also a rich body of 17th-century material as well as medical and scientific works. There is no contemporary list of John Dickinson's gift of 1784 nor is there any known catalogue of Norris's entire collection. Illustrated with six plates. Printed by the Stinehour Press.
