Mansfield Centre, CT Martino 2003 8vo. cloth liv, 216 pages +136 pages of plates
A reprint of the original edition printed at the Chiswick Press for The Bibliographical Society, London, 1913, with a 40-page introduction by the author. This work attempts to describe all marks and devices used by printers and publishers resident in Scotland and England from the introduction of printing to 1640, and of all wood-cut borders and ornaments containing the owner's device or initials; it also includes indexes for printers, booksellers, mottoes, inscriptions, initials of designers or engravers, and devices and compartments according to subject. From the earliest days many printers used a device or "printer's mark" to accompany their imprint. These will be found along with the colophon at the end of books printed before 1500-1510, and thereafter usually on the title-page. Familiar examples are the Aldine Anchor and Dolphin, the Estiennes Tree of Knowledge, and the Globe of the Elzevirs (Carter, ABC For Book Collectors). Illustrated with 428 facsimiles after the text.
