First edition. Catalogues works by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffman (1776--1822) and studies related to the German writer. Though interested in music and painting, the professional jurist's legacy is sustained in his short stories. Most of his best work was produced in the last ten years of his life, after he came to understand that his talents for composing were not as strong as he might wish. His fiction is considered the first flowering of the horror and fantasy short story, and had a profound impact on later writers, including Edgar Allan Poe and Carl Jung. Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is based on Hoffmann's tales from 1816. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Hoffmann opposite the title page. Loosely inserted is a commemorative book label that indicates that this volume came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale.

An extensive collection catalogue with 4785 entries, arranged into broad subject categories including scripture, theology, jurisprudence, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, arts, grammar, rhetoric, poetry, geography, history, and more. Individual lots are priced in ink in the margins. Dampstaining to title page and a few pages that immediately follow. Wear to extremities with small chips to head and tail of spine and to one panel between raised bands. Small corner of page 99 lacking. With the bookplate of Paul Lacombe and A. Aubry on the front pastedown. Loosely inserted is a commemorative booklabel which indicates that this set came from the reference library of H.P. Three volumes bound together. The second and third volumes are entitled Gutenbergs ersten Drucke and Zum Streit um das Missale speciale Constantiense, respectively. Three monographs of Hupp's analysis of the Missale Speciale, which he discovered in 1880. Each subsequent volume corrects the conjectures set forth in earlier issues and offers new interpretations. The third volume even includes extensive quotes from a number of other scholars. Text samples as well as entire pages of the Missale are reproduced in red, blue, and black-and-white. Though primarily known as a heraldist and ceramicist, this type of study fits naturally into Otto Hupp's concurrent interests as a typeface designer, engraver and artist. Memorial bookplate on front pastedown indicates that this copy came from the H.P. Kraus reference library and stock. Edges of cover rubbed.

With Unesco, Series 4, which contains Iranian illuminated manuscripts from c. 1410-1596; Series 14, which contains slides of 12 Czech illuminated manuscripts from c. 1085-1364; Series 17, which contains slides of 6 Ethiopian illuminated manuscripts c. 1350-1450; Series 18, which contains slides of 11 Turkish illuminated manuscripts from c.1200-1730; Series 24, which contains slides of Austrian Medieval wall paintings from c. 1089-1280.
