See More... (Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von) Schulte-Strathaus, Ernst BIBLIOGRAPHIE DER ORIGINALAUSGABEN DEUTSCHER DICHTUNGEN IM ZEITALTER GOETHES
Münich Georg Müller 1913 large 8vo. cloth (iv), 272 pages
First edition (Besterman 916). The significance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's (1749--1832) contribution to literary and societal developments in the eighteenth century cannot be overstated. Goethe wrote fiction, non-fiction and plays, was a courtier and studied natural philosophy. He was a major component of Sturm und Drang, a literary movement that celebrated the individual and examined man's struggle with subjectivity and his place in contemporary society--an idea that stood in stark opposition to the rational ideal established in the Enlightenment. Goethe's profound influence motivated Schulte-Strathaus to examine the works that were published concerning the Sturm und Drang movement in Goethe's time. This bibliography lists 750 first editions of these publications, many entries with some commentary. Arranged alphabetically by author. The titles are fully transcribed line for line. Includes reproductions of a number of title pages. Loose bookplate indicates that this copy was purchased from the collection of H.P. Kraus. Cover irregularly faded.

See More... (Grien, Hans Baldung) Oldenbourg, M. Consuelo DIE BUCHHOLZSCHNITTE DES HANS BALDUNG GRIEN.
Baden-Baden Valentin Koerner 1985 8vo. stiff paper wrapper 160 pages
Second edition (Besterman 2757). Publication of the series, Studien zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte. Though Hans Baldung Grien (1484/5-1545) is remembered today primarily for his painted altarpieces and figural memento mori compositions, his woodcuts are still widely appreciated. His artistic style is characterized by vibrant coloring and slightly distorted proportions. As for his personal style, he favored the color green for his attire; this anecdote possibly explains the source of the nickname "Grien." His later paintings were often endowed with a strange, supernatural green glow as well. The native German joined Dürer's workshop in Nuremberg in 1503 and may have run Dürer's workshop when the master was away on at least one occasion. Grien managed to develop a distinctive style apart from Dürer, however, and was one of the earliest masters of the chiaroscuro woodcut. His output was varied and extensive, including religious works, mythologies, portraits, designs for stained glass and tapestries, and a large body woodcuts. This bibliography of Grien's book illustrations is heavily illustrated. Memorial bookplate on front inside cover indicates that this copy came from the H.P. Kraus reference library and stock. Both covers slightly soiled. With 387 entries.
