Three auction catalogues bound together for the sale of Otto Jahn's (1813--1869) collection. The sale dates span February through November, 1870. The first volume catalogues Greek and Latin classical literature with over 7,500 lots. Volume two lists over 5,700 lots of archeological studies. The final section indexes books on a variety of topics, including histories, philological studies and printed books, with approximately 3,200 lots. Works listed are mostly from the eighteenth- and nineteenth- century, but some examples from the previous two centuries are represented. Two catalogues from this auction are missing: German literature and music. Considered as a set, this sale accurately reflects Jahn's personal and professional interests as an archaeologist, philologist, and writer on art and music. Loose bookplate indicates that this copy was purchased from the collection of H.P. Kraus. Corners and edges of covers rubbed. Book block completely detached. Pages irregularly faded, brittle and are prone to detachment from the binding.

Printed in an edition limited to 500 numbered copies. Introduction followed by four facsimile pages of the Dialogus de libertate ecclesiastica and a complete transcription of the text contained therein. Printed by John Lettou, who established the first printing press in London in 1480. When he later became partners with William de Machlinia, they issued only law books. It was only when Machlinia began working alone once again that books were printed in English for the first time in London. Memorial bookplate on front endpaper indicates that this copy came from the H.P. Kraus reference library and stock. Edges of cover creased and torn. Spine and hinges irregularly faded.

An intriguing figure in life as well as death: Kleist enlisted in the Prussian army after an abbreviated education, and was convicted as a French spy later in life. He ended his life by committing suicide after shooting his wife, thereby acting according to a pact made by the pair. Facsimile plates of title pages.
